在维基百科中,生物群系(Biome)在气候学和地理学上被定义为具有类似气候条件的地方,比如植物、动物和土壤生物组成的群落,它经常被称作生态系统。是Minecraft里有不同的地域特色,植物,高度,温度,湿度评级的地区。
在Minecraft中, 从万圣节更新开始,它意味着具有不同高度、温度、湿度、叶子颜色的区域。

在万圣节更新前,当地图被创建时会具有雪地或草地主题。但在这个更新之后,一个世界中就可以具有所有的主题,它们的分布由生物群系图决定。
Anivil文件格式中,世界数据直接存储在生物群系中,这不同于先前的国家或地区的文件格式的格式,其中的生物群系,从种子中动态计算。
13w36a快照更新后,生物群系有一个温度值,确定是否下雨、下雪或者别的什么。所需的值为: <0.15 为下雪, 0.15 - 1.5 为下雨, 1.5+ 则是什么天气也没有。这些值可以用来确定的高度,使雪在不同的生物群系中产生。
生物群系种类
目前一共有12种主要的生物群系和7种技术性生物群系。
不同的生物群系可以很容易地用草地和叶子的颜色以及出现的方块种类(例如沙漠中的仙人掌和针叶林中的松树)来区分。它们的分布是通过地图种子产生的伪随机决定的。
技术性生物群系能让各种生物群系之间的过渡更平滑,同时也可以作为某种生物群系附带的特性。

这个生物群系由平坦的地形和高山组成,菌丝替代了正常情况下的草地而出现在它的表面,但如果你放置了一块草,那么这块草会有比较亮的绿色,不同于丛林生物群系的。它倾向于作为一个小岛出现在距离地图的初始出生点和大陆较远的地方。它是可以自然出现巨型蘑菇的两个生物群系之一(另外一个是森林生物群系的顶部。),并且这里蘑菇可以在最大亮度下生长。 除了哞菇,没有生物会在这里刷新(包括敌对生物),即使在山洞、废弃矿井中。这意味着在地下探索是相对安全的,但刷怪箱依旧会生成生物。玩家也可以通过动物繁殖或使用物品(如刷怪蛋)来生成生物。 在这个生物群系中,树可以通过种植树苗生长,其他种在泥土或草上的植物也可以生长,只要它们没有和菌丝方块直接相邻——菌丝方块会取代泥土方块并使植物掉落。在菌丝上无法直接耕种,但是它可以被挖走并重新填充泥土方块,然后立刻耕种。一旦被开垦,耕地方块就可以免于被菌丝方块取代。

技术性生物群系 被发现于比它大的群系中。它们不能被视为真正的生物群系,但是它们被称为生物群系的一部分。然而,这些技术性生物群系在Minecraft中发挥重要的作用,用来建立更符合实际的地形。

Wolves may also spawn here, as they do in normal Taiga biomes. |

困难度
假如玩家出生在一个没有树的生物群系(比如沙漠、冻原,特别是海洋)的中心,生存和获取足够的资源会变得很困难。
已经有很多悲惨的例子:玩家出生在一个没有树的小岛上,周围是在游戏里几天都游不出去的宽阔海洋,或是出生在动物不能生成的沙漠岛屿。当玩家出生在一个这样的小岛上时,他们只能删掉地图重来、游到远处的大陆上或是寻找水下的废弃矿井去获得木头。当然,在创造模式中,这一切都不是问题。
