Seeds are an item used in farming. They can be found by tilling grass tiles with a hoe to make farmland or by harvesting fully-grown wheat. The chance of finding seeds while tilling is fairly small compared to harvesting wheat, which yields from 0 to 3 seeds per tile harvested (about 1,6 seeds/tile harvested in average). Seeds can be placed in farmland by right-clicking, where they will grow.

Growth & Growing Conditions

When left alone, seeds planted in farmland will grow to become wheat which can be harvested. Planted seeds need at least 1 block of air above them to grow, and grow more quickly when planted near abundant water and sufficient light. The image below shows the stages of growth from newly planted seeds to wheat that is ready for harvesting. Bone Meal can be used on the planted seeds to instantly mature the plants to the last stage of growth.

Crop states

Seeds must be grown in an area surrounded by some sort of barrier or your crops are at risk of being trampled. After stepping on tilled dirt with or without seeds, the dirt will revert back to normal after only a few steps (although this is randomly controlled because tests have shown it ranges anywhere from 1 steps to 10). Passive and hostile mobs can both affect these crops (apart from spiders and wolves, as of Beta 1.4). If trampled, planted seeds do not drop seed items, instead being permanently destroyed.

Harvesting

When fully grown, the crops will drop 1-2 wheat as well as 0-4 seeds. Allegedly, as of Beta 1.2_02, when harvesting fully matured wheat, there's a chance of it not dropping wheat. Additionally, at stages 5 and 6, seeds may be dropped if the crop is destroyed, although wheat will not.

Finding

Seeds can be found by tilling a grass block. The grass randomly yields seeds. The seeds then can be planted into the newly tilled dirt.

NOTE: Tilling dirt will not produce seeds, but will produce farmland. Right click to till, left click to destroy/create dirt blocks.
