Log of discussion re: Lockable chests:
[4:11:27 PM] Jasmine Iwanek: Lockable chests is another which would be more than just a texture/asthetic change.
[4:11:42 PM] Jasmine Iwanek: There would be keys and they'd have to be unique too.
[4:11:58 PM] Dylan Morrison: I can imagine it working somewhat similar to the way maps work
[4:12:01 PM] Jasmine Iwanek: So, unless it was like a code lock, I'm actually not too sure it would be feasable.
[4:12:12 PM] Dylan Morrison: in that each object is a unique instance with its own properties
[4:12:20 PM] Jasmine Iwanek: (Or atleast feasable without becoming pointless)
[4:12:58 PM] Jasmine Iwanek: And then there's the problem of lockable chests being smashable:
[4:13:07 PM] Jasmine Iwanek: Do the items pop out and the chest smashes?
[4:13:22 PM] Jasmine Iwanek: Do they stay in the chest leading to a denial of service?
[4:13:49 PM] Jasmine Iwanek: Or does the chest stay where it is nomatter what damage it takes and then basically becomes a griefing tool?
[4:14:08 PM] Jasmine Iwanek: XD
[4:14:19 PM] Jasmine Iwanek: So yeah, lockable chests would actually be really hard.
4:15:02 PM] Jasmine Iwanek: Hmm. stone chests and/or iron chests with higher blast resistance perhaps?
[4:15:31 PM] Dylan Morrison: lockable chests are obsidian
[4:15:35 PM] Dylan Morrison: that **** is nigh impossible to break
[4:15:42 PM] Fluttercait/CalmMelody: maybe even a stone and/or iron work table?
[4:15:50 PM] Jasmine Iwanek: I guess you could make them out of End stone....
[4:16:17 PM] Jasmine Iwanek: That **** is almost completely blast proof.
[4:18:11 PM] Jasmine Iwanek: So panda: For lockable chests we would basically go for "Damned hard to bust, but not impossible" then?
[4:18:18 PM] Jasmine Iwanek: What about the locking mechinism?
[4:18:38 PM] Dylan Morrison: well as I said before I was thinking something like the way maps work
[4:19:02 PM] Dylan Morrison: they're treated specially as unique instances based on their "damage value" (the same value that determines the color of wool)
[4:19:25 PM] Dylan Morrison: you do that with the keys and have each chest only respond to a key with a specific damage value, and each chest is generated with a matching key
[4:19:38 PM] Dylan Morrison: it limits the amount of lockable chests in the world to about 256
[4:19:46 PM] Dylan Morrison: but that wouldnt be a problem except on very overpopulated servers.
[4:20:31 PM] Dylan Morrison: it would allow people to give their keys to others to allow them access to their stuff
[4:20:39 PM] Dylan Morrison: it would also however give people an incentive to kill one another
[4:20:40 PM] Jasmine Iwanek: Sounds good.
[4:20:44 PM] Dylan Morrison: which is... not necessarily a bad thing.
[4:21:04 PM] Jasmine Iwanek: Maybe a passphrase lock would be better? I dunno.
[4:21:20 PM] Dylan Morrison: one would assume someone with a desirable locked chest (presumably full of goodies) is also well armed/armored.
[4:21:49 PM] Jasmine Iwanek: Fancy adding said notes while I go for a smoke?
[4:22:15 PM] Dylan Morrison: jas: The way Bukkit did lockable chests was to bind them directly to usernames, but I feel like that ruins the immersion
[4:24:32 PM] Fluttercait/CalmMelody: I have another thought for lockable chests: make it so that you have to use a pressure plate, button or switch to open them
[4:24:54 PM] Fluttercait/CalmMelody: allthough I know, those are things that people can easily bypass [4:25:50 PM] Dylan Morrison: Thats a potential "simpler" way to implement them
[4:25:54 PM] Fluttercait/CalmMelody: hmm, combination lock using switches/buttons?
[4:25:56 PM] Dylan Morrison: much in the way people lock rooms by adding iron doors
[4:26:06 PM] Fluttercait/CalmMelody: true
[4:26:24 PM] Dylan Morrison: I'm pretty sure someone has already done a combination lock door via redstone
[4:26:29 PM] Dylan Morrison: anyway the issue there is complexity
[4:26:33 PM] Fluttercait/CalmMelody: *nods*
[4:26:37 PM] Dylan Morrison: I find redstone hard to work with :P
[4:27:12 PM] Fluttercait/CalmMelody: technically... one could cheat a bit... make it a one switch lock, but put a whole bunch of switches on the wall with it... someone would have to guess which switch actually does the trick XD
[4:27:38 PM] Jasmine Iwanek: Panda: Aye, they have.
