2 things...

Hey Dinoguy! 2 two things. one, I'm back! and two, Something weird is going on with the wiki, a note that reads something about ender pearls is appearing all over the place. even in the main page! just wanted to let you know. by the time you read this, it will probably be fixed by then. :) Glad to be back. ☎ "To Protect And Moderate" (Spencer10APSC) 00:24, 5 December 2012 (UTC)

An IP editor vandalized Template:!, which I thought was impossible... -- Hower64 00:38, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
1:Woa! your a admid now!? Cool! Also, What happened to Dinoguy? is he taking a "wiki brake" too? 2: Your page reads as follows: "Hi there! I'm pretty stupid so if I've made a silly edit please leave a reminder on my talk page. Thanks, and happy editing." Really dude? I don't think you're stupid. or, have you not changed it yet. Again, I don't think you're stupid, You should not say that you are if you are not. :-)
I think he's just not online yet; he edited only yesterday after all. Alas, I am still quite inexperienced with wikis so I try to warn people if I do something stupid. Thank you, regardless. -- Hower64 01:07, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
Hehe, Your welcome. By the way, How do you archive a page? I want to archive some of the stuff on my talk page. Can you give me an Idea how to do that? Thanks. ☎ "Minepedia!? Да я чувак!" (Spencer10APSC) 01:15, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
Hi Spencer, welcome back. =)
As Hower said, I'm not on break or anything; I've just been out all day (and I've been having internet connection issues which were especially bad today, so I wasn't able to do much before I left). ;)
You can archive your talk page simply by creating a subpage in your user talkspace and copying the discussions you want archived from your talk page to the subpage. There's a few different names you can use for it; I'm partial to "Archive 1" (and so, my talk page archive starts with User talk:Dinoguy1000/Archive 1); then, when you decide the first archive page is full enough, you can just increment the number to end up with "Archive 2", and so forth. You should also link from your talk page to the archive, and it's usually a good idea to somehow note on the archive that it *is* an archive and that people should leave messages for you on your talk page instead of editing the archive.
Hower: the vandalism was possible because {{!}} wasn't protected; I've just done so.
ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 04:08, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
Oh. O.O When I reverted the vandalism, the page said "This page has been protected so that only users with administrator privileges can edit it, because it is included in the following cascade-protected page: Minecraft Wiki". I even tried editing the page while logged out and I could not (because of above reason). Can you please explain this? -- Hower64 04:16, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
No, I really can't. The most I can offer is that cascading protection has always interacted a bit weirdly with the cache, meaning it should generally be used as a backup protection, instead of relying directly on it. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 04:20, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
Oh, that sounds like a major bug. Thanks anyway. -- Hower64 04:24, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
Indeed it is; to be sure, it hasn't gone unnoticed on the English Wikipedia. =/ ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 04:53, 5 December 2012 (UTC)

Re: Reverting

Oh nothing, I just didn't properly import Ultradude's editableRollback script to the right page. I imported the script to User:Hower64/editableRollback.js instead of my vector.js, so it didn't work. Complete fail on my part, sorry! -- Hower64 03:58, 8 December 2012 (UTC)

Merging pages

What's the proper procedure for merging two pages? For example, Cheats and Commands are basically the same, so should I make sure all the content is on one page, then do a history merge (even though that would make the page diffs horribly confused)? For another example, Score has much less content than Experience, so would it make more sense to just delete it after combining the content? -- Orthotope 20:03, 9 December 2012 (UTC)

Generally, history merges should only be used when correcting copy-paste page moves: as you pointed out, they make the page history horribly confusing in most other cases, and they're next to impossible to revert - someone has to go through the entire history up to the merge, diff-by-diff, and determine which of the original pages the diff belonged to.
On the other side of the equation, though, the Creative Commons license used for the content of this wiki requires attribution for all content be maintained, regardless of how much (or how little) history that content has, so deleting a page after merging its content into another page is a definite no-go. Instead, the merged page should be redirected to the merge target, and the merge action and merged page should be noted in the edit summary on the merge target when the merge is performed. Some editors also like to leave a note on the merge target's talk page specifying that a merge happened and the merged page that the content came from; this is probably a good idea to always do, but I could never get into the habit myself.
Back to history merging, on the Yu-Gi-Oh! wiki, there have been cases where I've performed a history merge where one or both pages had very few revisions (typically less than 5 or so) and very similar content, where there was a high probability that some or all of the content had previously been copied from one page to the other. Most cases here should be far more clear-cut on whether a history merge is warranted, but you may come across one or two cases that are much less clear; for these, you can rely on your own judgment, or if you're not sure, ask me or another admin.
Sorry for the length, and hope this helps some! =) ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 20:16, 9 December 2012 (UTC)

Caption entry

Dinoguy, can you add an entry to {{entity}} for image captions? I'm not very familiar with template wikicode, so I don't want to screw up. I mainly want to add a caption entry to the template infobox so I can add a caption for describing the image in infoboxes such as the one in item (entity). Thanks - M0rphzone(talk) 02:49, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

Done. Note that I haven't tested it, and the logic around the first image is pretty hairy, so it may not work as intended (or it just may break everything horribly =D ), so let me know if something seems off. =) ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 03:12, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

My edit keeps getting removed

I have found an error on the Firework Star page, the recipe for a dyed firework star is, Gunpowder and Dye not Firework Star and Dye, I have edited this to the correct recipe 2 times and in both cases it was reverted back to the wrong recipe within 10 minutes. Is there a reason why my edit is being removed? Could you please fix the recipe to the correct recipe?

thanks, --Prizna 12:55, 20 December 2012 (UTC)

Did you read the article or my edit summaries? Adding dyes to a newly created firework star will produce a "Fade to color" effect. Admittedly, the color of the firework star used in the crafting grid should correspond to the outputted firework star to prevent this type of confusion. -- Hower64 13:08, 20 December 2012 (UTC)

Old vandalism question.

Hey Dinoguy. its Spencer. I was looking around in the Version history of Ghast, and I found Nasty vandalism by the User Herobrine-is-REAL. the user may be gone, and the edits may be in the History "book", But I was wondering... Since it was that bad (given the fact that the edits were racist). Can you or someone delete it even from the page history? I don't want anyone else to see what I saw. Thanks in advance. ☎ "Minepedia!? Да я чувак!" (Spencer10APSC) 22:20, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

There is a way to do that, but that editor made quite a few edits before they were blocked, and it'd be a bit of a pain going through them to find the ones worth removing. If you want to point me to specific revisions (preferably via email), I can hide them, but I'm not going to just look through all the edits to find ones that should be hidden. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 08:33, 29 December 2012 (UTC)
I'm not condoning the language used, but that incident was not the most horrible thing I've seen. Individual revision deletion has mostly been used for images, as thumbnails of every version are visible on the file page; text vandalism will only be seen when digging through the page diffs. Also, I'd hesitate to delete revisions for accountability purposes: it's hard to justify blocking someone for vandalism etc. if all the evidence has been hidden. -- Orthotope 09:48, 29 December 2012 (UTC)
Same here; I've seen far worse than that, and heard about even worse. Spending time around some of the noticeboards on Wikipedia shows you all sorts of ridiculously nasty vandalism. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 10:43, 29 December 2012 (UTC)

I was also thinking about this...

I was also thinking about making a Wiki Tech Support page or something like that. Were admids and other expert wiki editors can answer wiki related questions and do other things. And maybe add a tech support personnel list. Just a random thought. I thought you would like to hear it. P.S. I think we already have some of those things. Now that I think about it. ☎ "Minepedia!? Да я чувак!" (Spencer10APSC) 22:27, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

We already sort-of have such a noticeboard, by way of the admin noticeboard and community portal; in addition, a number of editors, myself and most of the other admins included, can answer technical questions posed on our talk pages (and the ones that can't usually know they can turn to one that can). I don't think it would be worth the extra overhead involved in setting up and maintaining such a noticeboard, given the other options already available and the size of our community. ;) ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 08:36, 29 December 2012 (UTC)

The only thing I can really suggest is to try forcing an update the next time you launch Minecraft.
If you have any mods installed, this will uninstall them, and if the forced update fixes the problem, you'll know it was probably caused by one of them, in which case you should reinstall them one at a time, re-running the game after installing each mod, until you find which one caused it.
If you don't have any mods installed, and the forced update doesn't fix the problem, you may want to see if it's a problem with your computer or operating system: run a virus and malware scan, make sure your operating system and Java are up-to-date, etc.
If none of this helps you, the only thing I can suggest is to post your problem and what you've tried to fix it on the forum; someone there should be able to help you a lot better than I can. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 00:42, 5 January 2013 (UTC)

It's a shame to see you go again, but obviously, if you aren't getting any joy or satisfaction from constructive editing, you shouldn't force yourself just to appease others (particularly if it means you end up doing something unadvisable).
As for what keeps me editing, I genuinely enjoy it, and more generally, if I don't feel like editing, I don't (aside from the occasional one- or two-click revert or something). In addition, there are certain types of edits that I particularly enjoy and that I'm very good at (the latter having arisen from the former ;) ), so if I get too bored of general editing, I can usually fall back on my real interests. In addition, I make sure to have something completely unrelated to editing to do when I'm feeling burned out; I watch a lot of anime and read a decent amount of manga, for instance - basically, it's all about pacing yourself so you don't have a chance to get too bored or burned out.
That being said, I have been feeling a bit burned out for quite a while now, and as a result don't really edit as much as I used to, though this is largely of my own doing, by stretching myself thin across several wikis. ;) ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 23:26, 8 January 2013 (UTC)

Thoraph 07:28, 10 January 2013 (UTC)~~ Thoraph 07:28, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi Thoraph, and welcome to the wiki!
I can't really say, to be honest, partly because I'm not altogether sure just what areas of the wiki would currently benefit most from attention, but also partly because the areas you could help the most in ultimately depend on your own interests and aptitudes. For starters, then, I would recommend just spending time looking around the wiki, familiarizing yourself with the structure and contents of the articles and reading some of the discussions on talk pages, while keeping an eye out for things to do that you think you'd be up to. Take your time and don't be afraid of making mistakes; anything you do can be easily undone or adjusted if it needs to be. And don't get discouraged if it seems you can't find anything to do! There's nothing at all wrong with just kicking back and reading articles for a while. ;)
Lastly, if you need any help or have any other questions, feel free to ask. Happy editing! =) ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 09:10, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

Titleblacklist

I saw your addition to block Issues, so I tested it on the recent 13w03a page, and was still able to edit it. Between the testing with default MC screenshot uploading a few weeks ago and that addition not working, I think there's some internal issue with the blacklist extension. From what I understand, none of the < > options work and using them voids the block entirely, going on the <reupload> testing and how the file block worked without the <reupload> tag. --Kanegasi C 00:13, 18 January 2013 (UTC)

I noticed that myself. Unfortunately, if it won't work with <> configuration, it largely defeats the purpose of the blacklist entry, since it'll only prevent new page creation, instead of also preventing edits to existing pages. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 00:45, 18 January 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for your time and consideration, Megaave 00:57, 7 February 2013 (UTC)megaave

Hello Megaave, and welcome to the wiki!
If you mean you would like permission to write about Sethbling in general, I'm not sure why you're asking me, since I don't have any personal affiliation with him and couldn't grant permission even if I did. If, on the other hand, though, you are asking permission to write an article about him here on the wiki, I can tell you that the only way to do so would be to write it in your userspace (e.g. at User:Megaave/Sethbling). Per several of the wiki rules (and in particular rule 6), the wiki proper does not cover aspects of the fan community, so any article about the fan community will either be deleted or moved to userspace anyways.
If you have any other questions, or need help with anything, please don't hesitate to ask. Happy editing! =) ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 03:59, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

Minecraft Wiki Latency Issue

Good day. I access this site quite often. Over time it has been getting slower and slower. I have a very high speed internet connection and for some reason, I can get up to 8 second (average) latency (sometimes 20 - 30 seconds). I know that servers do not run for free, (I am a web developer myself.) but the advertisements are lagging up my browser(s) like crazy. I have to keep hitting my stop button, in order for me to get the information that I need here. This website has every resource that I need. It is fantastic webssite but, out of all my 'favorites' this is the only one with the worst latency problem.

Is there something that can be done about this or am I taking this issue with the wrong person?

Sorry to cry on your shoulder, but you have a good thing here. And if a outside source is eating up your resources for a unknown reason, or if it is 'over populated'?!?? Can you send this email to the right person and see if something can be done to speed up a super website like a normal website can be? This is ridiculous.

Have a good day and thank you for taking the time to read my gripe.

Unfortunately, I am not the right person to talk with about this: I'm only a volunteer administrator, and have little more pull with Curse than any other editor or reader. In addition, Curse is well aware of the amount of frustration and dislike surrounding the advertisements; it has been discussed on-wiki multiple times and Curse has been directly petitioned to alter or remove the advertisements more than once. This, however, seems to be a matter on which Curse will not budge. If you would still like to make your concerns known to someone better equipped to pass them to the right people, though I would direct you to Wynthyst and wish you the best of luck. Hey I just noticed that the Netherrack fence page has the section history twice (one inside the other). I can't fix it because section removal is harmful or something. Thanks –Preceding unsigned comment was added by 31.25.46.34 (Talk) 20:34, 17 February 2013‎ (UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~

Fixed. The reason you got a warning for doing that is due to section removal being one of the few actions reserved for autoconfirmed users and above. Even though this is an open wiki, there still needs to be protections against anonymous vandalism. Non-autoconfirmed restrictions definitely don't cover much, but think of it as the police tape "first line of defense" in the war on vandalism. I would like to think a decent chunk of people stop there before trying something else. Kanegasi C 21:25, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

Just saying....

Hi Dino, the only reason I did that change to Mooshroom is so that readers can see that it is an external link, and not a Minecraft Wiki page. Numbermaniac 05:54, 18 February 2013‎ (UTC)

Special:Interwiki links exist for a reason. Anything using an Interwiki link is trusted and does not need to be labeled as external. Kanegasi C 05:57, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
You should explain this stuff in your edit summaries, instead of leaving others to guess at your intentions and reasoning. If you'd done that here, I could have replied much more directly in my own edit summary when I undid your edit.
In addition to what Kanegasi said, there is a slight visual difference between internal and interwiki links - compare this and this, for instance. Obviously, it's a quite subtle effect, but that's by design more than anything. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 06:02, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
Wow, those were some quick replies. Anyway, sorry. I've only been here for one month, so I might make a few mistakes here and there. I didn't know about that. Sorry. Numbermaniac 06:12, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
It's not exactly a rule, but if it's already linked and the link works, it's fine. Interwiki links, as they have been explained for me, are just wiki code used to cut corners in linking while editing. If you know the name of a wikipedia article, it's much quicker to just throw [[wikipedia:Article|link name]] together (or the even shorter [[wp:Page|wikipedia article with the "Wikipedia:" prefix]], instead of having to open another browser tab/window and copy the full url. There are also uses for Interwiki links where you can put an external link in an edit summary, where normal external links won't work. Kanegasi C 06:20, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
Makes sense. Thanks :) Numbermaniac 07:50, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

Bugs not reported anymore? What?

Hi, What do you mean when you say bugs aren't reported here anymore? does it refer to the bug tracker? Numbermaniac 20:43, 26 February 2013 (UTC)

Yep. It's been months since any official representative of Mojang or 4J has responded to bug reports anywhere on-wiki, instead preferring the Atlassian bug tracker (for the computer and PE versions) or the forum topic (for the Xbox version). As a result, there is no longer any point in tracking bugs on-wiki, which means there's no point in accepting bug reports here. This also means the Issues pages have all been officially archived and the system retired (new Issues subpages are no longer being created for new MC versions) and that we've started removing bug reports from elsewhere on the wiki. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 21:23, 26 February 2013 (UTC)
Oh. When it comes to the bugs section on each page, I know the issue tracker template is being implemented. However, the bugs don't appear to show up. Is that because the bug may be closed or solved? Or is there a different reason? Numbermaniac 06:43, 1 March 2013 (UTC)
It's an issue with JIRA. More info on ultradude25's talk page. Kanegasi C 06:47, 1 March 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. Am I allowed to manually type them and give the links after the header, or should we wait until it is fixed? Numbermaniac 07:38, 1 March 2013 (UTC)
I think it would be better to wait until it is fixed, because you'd be wasting your time and effort. GoandgooTalk

Alright. Hopefully they do fix it soon. Numbermaniac 10:48, 1 March 2013 (UTC)

Two broken links...

Sorry to bother you so much, but I just wanted to say two things.

  1. The link on your user page that shows your skin says 'not found'.
  2. When I click the CC BY SA 3.0 link, it goes to the wiki's home page? Why is this?

Numbermaniac 10:54, 1 March 2013 (UTC)

Don't worry too much, I'm here to help. =)
It used to be possible to view a page on the Minecraft website showing any user's skin; that link is to that old page. Unfortunately, it's been broken for some time and AFAIK there is no new functionality on Minecraft.net allowing player skins to be viewed, so I've left the link mostly because I haven't felt like changing or removing it. ;)
This is a known issue; it was previously reported at User talk:Wynthyst#Content license and from the sound of it, there's not much that can be done about it at present.
Cheers! =) ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 15:24, 1 March 2013 (UTC)

Blocked at first edit.

My username was originally 'Randomystick' and I was editing my profile page. When I clicked 'Save Changes', this popup appeared:

The block was made by Abuse filter. The reason given is Automatically blocked by abuse filter. Description of matched rule: Large spam pages. Start of block: 10:24, 3 March 2013 Expiry of block: infinite Intended blockee: Randomystick You can contact Abuse filter or another administrator to discuss the block. You cannot use the 'e-mail this user' feature unless a valid e-mail address is specified in your account preferences and you have not been blocked from using it. Your current IP address is 116.15.40.209, and the block ID is #8302. Please include all above details in any queries you make.

According to the information given, I have apparently written too much information on my user page, resulting in a permanent ban. The wiki suggested contacting the Abuse filter, but I have been blocked from it as well. As a 'last resort' effort I decided to contact an admin, and that's how I ended up on your talk page, asking for help. As this is my first edit to my user page(or any page on this wiki, for that matter), I feel that I should be given a second chance and be unblocked from the Minecraft wiki. Thank you for your patience.
