Here are some general guidelines for proper grammar. I believe this really is a problem in this wiki. I'm not a native speaker but a few seconds in google is all I needed for this list. This list is not comprehensive, I just wanted to point out common mistakes. Also these are general rules, made to make reading easier and more fluent. Disregard them if you feel another way would make it more fluent to read (but please use full stops) . Also edit this article to your liking.

Spelling

When in doubt use Google.

  • Minecraft, not MineCraft.
  • Seecret Friday Update is the official name by Notch himself, please do not change it to Secret Friday Update.
  • Sulphur or sulfur, not sulfer. The game uses "sulphur" in the tooltips.

Punctuation

General

  • The character ' is an apostrophe, do not use it as a quotation mark.
  • Use a comma when necessary but when in doubt leave it out (or check here).

Sentence Termination

  1. End a question with a question mark.
Example: Do you think it is really necessary to point this out?
  2. Use exclamation marks to add emphasis to the statement (but only use one).
    Example: We are not idiots!
  3. A full stop for every other sentence.
Example: A lot of users seem to forget these kind of things.

Comma

  1. Between a list of three or more words.
Example: Up, down, left and right.
  2. Before a conjunction.
    1. When but or for are used.
Example: I did my best to protect the server, but the griefers were too aggressive.
When and or or are used the comma is optional.
  3. To give additional information.
    1. To indicate contrast.
Example: The rare thing added in beta was the deadmau5 skin, not the pigmen.
    2. Where the phrase could be in brackets.
Example: We tried setting up a server, we have never used linux before, and it was harder than we thought.
    3. Where the addition is not necessary to the meaning of the sentence.
Example: My least favourite mobs, creepers, are constantly following me.
    4. Where the main clause of the sentence is dependent on the preceding clause.
      Examples:
      • If at first you don't succeed, give up.
      • Though the snake was small, I still feared for my life.
  4. For opening phrases, conjunctive verbs, etc.
    1. Introductory or opening phrases.
      Examples:
      • In general, light is needed for every pant to grow.
      • On the whole, spiders only attack when riled.
    2. Conjunctive verbs.
Example: Unfortunately, the admin was already in a bad mood and, furthermore, pink wasn't its colour.
    3. Following for example, that is, etc.
You should use commas, for example, around 'for example'.
There are some exceptions: namely, when using abbreviations.
  5. Where a pause is required.
Example: Do not kill every chicken you see, its just not necessary.

Capitalization

Here are some rules or capitalization:

  1. Capitalize the first word of a quoted sentence.
Example: Notch said, "I just updated the client."
  2. Capitalize points of the compass only when they refer to specific regions.
    Examples:
    • We have had three castles in the South.
    • Go south three blocks and then turn left.
    • We live in the southeast section of town. Southeast is just an adjective here describing section, so it should not be capitalized.
  3. Do not capitalize names of seasons.
Example: I love autumn colors and spring flowers.
  4. Capitalize words derived from proper nouns.
Example: This wiki is written in English. English is capitalized because it comes from the proper noun England.
  5. After a sentence ending with a colon, do not capitalize the first word if it begins a list.
Example: These are the passive mobs: cows, sheeps, chickens and pigs.
  6. Capitalize when two or more sentences follow a sentence ending with a colon.
Example: There are different types of mobs in Minecraft: Cows, sheeps, chickens and pigs are passive mobs. But e.g. creepers, zombies, skeletons and ghasts are aggressive mobs.
