Fighting monsters in minecraft is a tricky thing to do, and mistakes while fighting cause most player deaths. This article has proven methods for fighting monsters in all 3 dimensions.

Weapons and Armor[]

The one thing you should always carry around with you is a good sword. After about 4 days in the game, you should be carrying an iron sword. YOU SHOULD NOT BE CARRYING AROUND A STONE SWORD AFTER THIS POINT UNLESS IT IS A BACKUP. Also, you should not do any serious exploring or mining after you have an iron sword.

PLEASE DON'T WASTE GOLD ON WEAPONS OR ARMOR.

Here is a priority list for weapons and armor (listed highest to lowest):

With your enchantment table, your first priority is to enchant a diamond sword. Try to get a level 8-28 enchantment. Level 26 and 27 seem to be the best. You should end up with a sharpness enchantment, a knockback enchantment, or both. Both of these will be very useful. If you end up with a third enchant, you are lucky. In the future, if you get a sword with looting or fire aspect, keep it for when you need it. Remember that fire aspect is useless against nether mobs.

Your next priority is to enchant a bow. Try to get a level 11-30 enchantment. Aim for levels 15 and up if you can. You will need at least a power II enchant, and punch is optional. Infinity and flame are also useful, although they are rare.

You should then try to enchant a set of iron or diamond armor. Try to get a level 10-30 enchantment. You should try to get some kind of protection on each piece of armor. Thorns is also useful. Feather falling on boots and respiration on helmets are rare, but good to have. If you plan on entering the nether, it is reccomended to have a fire protection enchantment on one piece of armor.

Zombies and Skeletons[]

These are the easiest mobs to fight. For zombies, you can simply run up to them and hit them with a sword. If a group of them starts to attack you, just run away and shoot them if you can. Since skeletons shoot back, caution is advised when trying to kill them with a sword. It is highly recommended to kill them with a bow. Never fight a skeleton on a cliff as the arrows could knock you off.

Spiders[]

Spiders are one of the easier mobs to kill, and more common too. If on flat ground, simply run up to it and kill it with a sword. Never let a spider get on a ledge above you, as it can jump on your head and it will be hard to kill. If you are below a ledge with a spider on it, back off and shoot it with a bow if you can. Cave spiders are much more dangerous as they can poison you. If you find a cave spider, back off and try to kill it with a bow. Disable the spawner as soon as possible as these are one of the more dangerous mobs to fight.

Creepers[]

Creepers are possibly the most dangerous monster in minecraft. With that being said, be sure to have extra caution when fighting them. You should NEVER fight a creeper with a sword unless you have the proper equipment (see below.) The standard creeper killing method is to get at a distance and shoot them with a bow. If the creeper begins to chase you, back off and keep shooting until it is dead. Then you can collect the gunpowder. A punch enchantment on your bow can be great help when fighting creepers.

If you want to fight a creeper with a sword, you MUST have a sword with a knockback enchantment. Sharpness would help a lot too. To do this, sprint up to the creeper, jump, and hit the creeper while falling. Repeat until the creeper is dead.

Charged creepers are very difficult to fight. If you see one, sprint right past its side and don't stop until it explodes. You will not get hurt if you do it properly. This also works for dispatching normal creepers too, but it really messes up the landscape.

NEVER FIGHT A CREEPER ON A CLIFF IF YOU ARE NOT WEARING ARMOR WITH BLAST PROTECTION. OTHERWISE, YOU WILL GET KNOCKED OFF.

Endermen[]

Your weapon of choice when fighting endermen should be an iron or diamond sword with a high level sharpness enchantment. Walk up to the enderman, looking at the ground. When you have reached it, look up carefully and hit it with the sword. It should take 3-8 hits to kill. If it teleports, turn around, still looking at the ground, and then carefully look up. When you find the enderman, move towards it and attack.

When in the End, you should preferably wear a pumpkin on your head to avoid provoking them. This will save you a lot of trouble.

It is possible to kill endermen with a bow but it may result in accidental provocation.

Slimes[]

Slimes are one of the more annoying monsters around. If you are living underground or in a swamp biome, they can be a nuisance at times. A good method to take out giant slimes is to back up and shoot them with a bow until they split. Then go up and kill the medium ones with a sword. As the smaller ones only need one punch, switch to another item to avoid wasting your sword. You can leave the small ones alive as they do no damage, but they can be really annoying.

If you are underground in a tight space, it is easier to kill the large slimes with a sword. Remember that anything on this section works with Magma cubes also.

The Nether[]

The Nether is a scary place to be, and it has lots of tough monsters. As a general rule, you should not go in if you do not have iron armor and a diamond sword. On your armor, you should have at least one fire protection enchantment and one protection enchantment. Blast protection and feather falling are also very useful but not required.

Ghasts are the most common mob in the nether, and one of the scariest too. The most used method is to shoot them with a bow. It should take 2-3 hits to kill one. With a power III bow, it may only take one hit to kill them. If a ghast is close to the ground, try to keep yourself under it to get the valuable drops. A secondary method is to reel one in with a fishing rod, and then hit it with a sword. Doing this will help you get drops faster.

Zombie pigmen are also commonly found in the nether. Since they attack in groups once one is provoked, you should not fight them unless you know for sure how many there are around. As a general rule, you should not attempt to take on a group of more than 4 monsters at once. A sword should word for killing them.

Blazes are considered by most players the trickiest nether mob to fight, however they are necessary for brewing potions. To find them, look in a nether fortress for a monster spawner. You then have 2 choices: fight them out in the open or enclose the spawner. The first is not recommended due to it being more dangerous.

The End[]

When entering the End, you should have full enchanted iron or diamond armor, a pumpkin as a helmet, and a diamond sword with sharpness III or IV. Make sure to place a bed in the portal room and sleep before you go, juct in case you die. Here is a list of what to bring to the End:

  • A diamond sword, as mentioned above, and a spare iron one
  • A set of armor, as mentioned above
  • Bow with at least power II, and a spare
  • 64-128 arrows or an infinity enchant on your bow
  • 32-64 torches
  • 64+ cobblestone or dirt
  • A water bucket (optional)
  • A diamond pick with efficiency III or IV (optional)

When you enter the portal, you will be standing on an obsidian platform. If it is underground, dig a staircase up. If it is in the air, get off somehow. You should now be standing on an island of end stone.

Here is what you should do once on the island:

  • Destroy the crystals with your bow
  • Kill the dragon with your bow
  • Collect the experience
  • Kill as many endermen as you want
  • Collect as much end stone as you want
  • Remove the egg (using a piston and lever)
  • Jump into the fountain
