The Update Aquatic is the name for a major update that was released for nearly all of the Minecraft editions during the summer of 2018, except for Legacy Console Edition, which has not received the update yet.
The update was released on Java Edition on July 18, 2018 as version 1.13.[1][2] On Bedrock Edition, the Update Aquatic was split into two updates due to the amount of content, with most of the features being released in Phase One as version 1.4 on May 16, 2018,[3] and the rest of the features released as version 1.5 on July 10, 2018.[4] Legacy Console Editions will be getting the update as well after all parts of the update have been released for Bedrock Edition,[5] except on the Xbox One Edition and the Nintendo Switch Edition, which were both replaced by the Bedrock Engine. This will be the last update for Legacy Console Editions, excluding PlayStation 4.[6] Additionally, the Update Aquatic was released for the Education Edition in the 1.4.0 update on June 12, 2018.[7] The update was also released for Minecraft China. It was released on mobile devices on July 6, 2018, and on PC on July 10, 2018.[8]
The official name for the update, the Update Aquatic, was revealed on November 18, 2017, during the MineCon Earth 2017 livestream, at which time the Java Edition was to be released as 1.14.
Jeb had stated in a 2011 interview that he wanted to implement more sea life into the game.[9]
The first pre-release on Java Edition, 1.13-pre1, was released on June 4, 2018, the second pre-release was released on June 15, the third on June 21, the fourth on June 26, the fifth on June 28, the sixth on July 4, the seventh on July 10, the eighth on July 13, the ninth on July 16, and the tenth on July 17.
This update had 10 pre-releases for Java Edition, the largest number of pre-releases for any update.
On July 10, Mojang released a trailer for the update.
