Transportation Types

Once you have played Minecraft for a while, especially on Multiplayer, you start to expand your world, and it can take time and effort to travel from your base to say, your mine. There are 3 main types of transportation, Minecarts, Boats and just plain old normal walking. To find out about speeds and other information, then check out the Transportation page, as this is just how to build different types of transportation.

Walking / Running / Sprinting

This is the first and only type of transport that requires no resources (besides food since the 1.8 Beta Update, which is also when sprinting was introduced (unless you play on peaceful)). To sprint, double tap the W button on your keyboard (presuming you didn't change the button for walking forward). On the other hand, you may become hungry much faster. You can move faster using potions of swiftness.

Boats

This is the second type of transport which takes only 5 Wooden Planks, and is the only type of transport used on water. No tracks are required to be built either, allowing you travel freely on water. To build a dock, make a 4 across by 6 forward rectangle out of Wooden Planks, apart from the side that will be the exit. Then place 2 Trapdoors 1 block higher at the exit/entrance. You should then fill the 3 x 2 hole with water. Then, if you have been to The Nether, place Soul Sand at the bottom of the dock to stop the Boat from crashing.

Minecarts

To build a train station, then have a look at the Tutorials/Train Station article. This is the fastest of the three, however is the one that requires the most resources, using 5 Iron Ingots. You also need to make tracks as well, which take 6 Iron Ingots and a Stick to make 16 Rails, 6 Gold Ingots and 1 Redstone Dust for 6 Powered Rails, and 6 Iron Ingots, a Stone Pressure Plate and 1 Redstone Dust to make 6 Detector Rails. You can also transport items by making a Storage Minecart, which is a Chest that can be moved on a track, and a Powered Minecart which can power other Minecarts once Coal/Charcoal has been put inside.

Pigs

If you have a Saddle and a Carrot on a Stick then you an ride a pig as transport. They can jump up 1 block high platforms and you must have the Carrot on a stick selected in your hotbar. It is also a good idea to bring plenty of spare carrots as the pig will eat them as you travel.
