Nether Wart is commonly a fairly hard resource to obtain. These are only found in nether fortresses and usually in small supply. These can be planted and grown on soul sand in any dimension in Minecraft; whether it be the nether, over world or end.

Finding Netherwart

To find nether wart plantations, one must first find a nether fortress (guide on nether fortresses can be found here).

Choosing A Location For A Netherwart Farm

It would be advisable when choosing where to build your nether wart farm that you choose a location in the nether which you will predominantly if not always be within 150 blocks or meters of it. Near the nether portal is often a player favorite. Any netherwart farm should never be made out of netherrack as with ghasts forever floating about it could cause your farm to be destroyed. Use materials with relatively high blast resistance, for example; brick, stone, and cobblestone. On the multiplayer servers that use an private furnace plugin your nether wart farm should have furnace walls so the griefers can't steal/destroy your farm.

Nether Wart Needs

The Nether Wart only needs soul sand to grow, it's growth rate doesn't factor light or water/lava. As of the 1.3.1 update Nether Wart can now be grown in the Overworld.

Digging a 6 wide, by 2 blocks deep hole for as long as you want this to go (remembering that you must account for redstone lengths in this). Place in the center two rows of this hole, two rows of side by side sticky pistons. On either side of these pistons place all redstone repeaters or alternatively making every second one redstone to save supplies. Connect these repeaters to a row of redstone behind them and connect up both sides to a central lever of your choosing. Place soul sand on top of the sticky pistons and plant your netherwart. Leave these to grow as long as you wish remembering that they are fully grown when they resemble a full block in size. Once you want to harvest, just flick your lever or button and run along the sides of the soul sand to collect. Running on the soul sand will slow you down and lengthen your harvest time. Simply replant your netherwart and leave them to grow.
