This tutorial will tell you how to survive in The End. If you want to know how to kill the Ender Dragon, then this is not the place for you.

A note

This Page is a WIP. Please do not complain about it being incomplete.

Before continuing, please note that this page assumes that you have already killed The Ender Dragon. If you have not done so, then I suggest you do, as it is extremely hard to survive in The End with The Ender Dragon alive. It also assumes that you are playing on easy or above, because playing peaceful makes it far less challenging than on other difficulties.

Pros and cons of living in The End

Pros

  • It has no creepers
  • It has no hostile mobs other than The Ender Dragon (Endermen are neutral)
  • It has a lot of empty space for building
  • It is very flat and easy to see across
  • It has lots of obsidian and endstone
  • Unlike The Nether, it can have both water and lava placed in it
  • The Ender Dragon is not very hard to kill and gives you lots of experience

Cons

  • If you fall into the Void, you will lose all your items
  • The Dragon is very hard to kill
  • The island is quite small
  • Endermen spawn infinitely, no matter how many you kill there will always be more
  • If you want to survive, you have to bring a lot of stuff with you that would otherwise be inaccessible
  • Beds don't work, and, just like in the nether, they will explode and set fire to the area around you if you try to sleep in one.
  • Obsidian is hard to mine and can take a long time to make a shelter using it (see buildings)

Endermen

Endermen can be very annoying while in The End. They completely cover the island and are very hard to avoid looking at, so always carry a bucket of water with you. If an Enderman tries to attack you, place down the bucket where you are. It should walk into the water and then teleport away. It may also stop attacking you, but even if it doesn't, it will die from the water. Another approach is to wear a pumpkin, and all the Endermen will ignore you completely until you attack them. The downside is that you can only see partially, but by pressing F5 (Ctrl+F5 or Fn+F5 on some computers) you will enter 3rd person mode, where you can see fully again.

Buildings

Your Home

In The End, there are lots of ways you can build your home. One idea is to build your house underground, making it hard to find (on multiplayer) and also very easy to make.

Another option is to hollow out one of the Ender Towers, making a multi-level building.

One thing that you MUST do is make the ceiling of your house 2 blocks tall. If you make the ceiling any higher than Endermen will be able to spawn in your home. Also, making your house out of dirt, or other blocks Endermen can move is a bad idea as Endermen could pick up the blocks and ruin your home. Cobblestone is a safe option, as Endermen cannot pick up stone-related blocks.

Portal Room

One thing you should do is make a room/building that has The End portal in it. This will stop Endermen from falling through the portal and appearing in The Overworld (which will be annoying if you ever chose to return to The Overworld) and will also stop you from accidently leaving The End.

The Egg

You should also collect the Dragon Egg from the top of the portal. Before you collect it, you should cover the portal with blocks, so when it drops it will not land in the portal and get sent to The Overworld. After that, do not mine it. If you do, the Egg will teleport away (An exception is if you are sneaking and use a sword). The strategy most people use is to place a piston facing towards it and activate the piston. It will now drop as an item.

Although the egg is purely for decoration and as no useful function, it is still a nice thing to have in your base as a ornament that will always remind you of when your journey in The End began.

Farming

Overworld Farms

In The End, you can still make many of the farms you would typically make in The Overworld. One of the most important farms to make is a cobblestone generator. Here are two different designs for cobblestone generators that both require 1 lava bucket and 1 water bucket. The first design only generates one block at a time, while the second design can generate 4 blocks at the same time, making it far more efficient than the other one.

Another important farm to make is a tree farm. To make the trees actually grow, you need to place a torch/ some glowstone near the tree or else the light level is too low for the tree to grow.

All of the normal farms (like potato farms, sugar cane etc.) work as they do in the overworld, however you may need to place a light source next to the farm for it to function properly. Also, if you want to have animal farms,(chicken, pigs etc.) you can make them but only if you pushed the animals through The End portal before you entered The End, or if you brought eggs with you (for chickens).

End Exclusive Farms

One of the advantages of living in The End is that it is far easier to build an Endermen farm/grinder. These take a lot of effort to make but are extremely useful after making them and is definitely worth the time put into it. If you want to learn how to learn how to make one, go to Enderman Farming or search on YouTube for Endermen Farming.

The Ender Chest

The Ender Chest is one of the most useful items in the game. If you place any Ender Chest anywhere, it will have the same items in it. Due to the massive amounts of obsidian in The End, it should be very easy to make an ender chest for each building/area of The End. To make that many Ender Chests, you will need about 4 or 5 Eye of Ender so don't forget to bring them with you when you enter The End.
