Breaking a fall is an essential of Minecraft because they are always one of the most common causes of death.
Ways to Break a Fall
Block Clutch
Cobweb Clutch
This technique uses cobwebs to break a fall. Cobwebs can reset fall damage[1]; however, they have this disadvantage where they take longer to break without either shears, flowing water, or a sword to break them.
Block Clutch
This uses any block, except fluids, hay bales, beds, and entities (i.e., minecarts, boats, etc.), to break a fall, though if this is performed at least twenty-five blocks higher than the surrounding terrain, it's practically useless.
Hay Bale Clutch
This clutch uses hay bales to at least lessen the damage.
| Block/Item | Advantages | Disadvantages |
|---|---|---|
| Cobweb | It stops fall damage | It needs shears, flowing water, or a sword to break; otherwise, it will take longer |
| Hay Bale | It dampens fall damage by 80% | Hoes are the fastest way to break it, so if you're in a manhunt and the hunters are gaining on you, this isn't the best option. |
Elytra
If the player is wearing an elytra or has one in their inventory, they can break their fall by gliding safely to the ground.
Slow Falling Potion
If the fall is great enough, there may be sufficient time to drink a potion of slow falling before hitting the ground.
Boat Clutch
This involves placing a boat and entering it moments before the player hits the ground. If done correctly it can completely negate fall damage.
