One of the most important things about a shelter is where it is. Here you'll learn about the top 5 and worst 5 biomes to build your base in. Note: I am not including the Nether, or the End due to both being inaccessible until later in the game. Also, this guide is assuming you are going to build a normal house above ground and on the ground (Not floating), and not in water.

Top 5 Biomes

  • 5. Forest/Taiga Maybe the best known biomes in Minecraft, they're good for a base due to a surplus of wood. Apples are also dropped ever-so-often and are an ok source of food, and both can easily be grown back with saplings. The downside is that they're very crowded and are a pain with bigger constructions. They're also very annoying while trying to ride a horse or pig. Also, it is hard to find Endermen in them.
  • 4. Swampland This biome is great because it's flat, has plenty of trees, water, and clay, while also having Witch Huts and slimes.
  • 3. Plains/Tundra Both are very flat and open, but lacking resources. Trees will rarely spawn in Tundra biomes and can not be found in Plains. However Plains are a good source of flowers and seeds and horses can spawn in plains. Probably the best part about plains is that Villages will spawn which you can use for bases.
  • 2. Desert/Savanna Deserts and savannas are basically upgrades of Plains and Tundra. Deserts and savannas can have villages. In Deserts you can find Desert Temples, Desert Wells, and surface Dungeons. Savannas can have horses in them, and have many trees. However, it does not rain in either of these biomes.
  • 1. (Here we are! The moment you've all been waiting for!) (Dududududu...) Mushroom Islands! These biomes are very rare, are not connected to the "mainland" in anyway, and are usually kind of small. So why is it #1? Because NO MONSTERS SPAWN HERE! Yep! Not above ground or below it! Its completely safe for new players, and still great for experienced players. But WAIT! Is that all? No! The one mob that does spawn there, Mooshrooms, can be "milked" with a bowl to get mushroom stew, so its an infinite food source! Have fun!

Worst 5 Biomes

  • 5. Extreme Hills (Mountains) This biome is not good for not only being low on wood and food supply but also not being flat enough for most bases. However they have a great view and can offer the best lookout points, as well as being the only biome to generate emerald.
  • 4. Mesa This biome is beautiful, however it is lacking many resources (such as wood), unless you want a house made of stained clay.
  • 3. Ice Spikes Plains A very interesting biome with its random giant spires or packed ice, and is very beautiful like the mesa, but also like the mesa, lacks resources. However if near a biome with more resources you could build a interesting base there.
  • 2. Ocean Is an "ok" place to build a house due to no mobs except squids, but must already have resources to build here.
  • 1. Jungle Probably my least favorite biome in Minecraft, because, even as it has Jungle Temples and lots of wood, its so annoying due to no space at all. If you build a base here, you better have patience. Its going to take a while to clear out all the shrubs, trees, and bushes in your way! Or use fire..! Or you could build a treehouse!
