Turtle shells, referred to as turtle helmets in the game’s code, are items that are used for brewing or as a helmet to give the player the Water Breathing status effect.

Usage
Like helmets, turtle shells can be placed in the top armor slot of a player's inventory for activation.
Equipping
A player wearing a turtle shell. You can see the Water Breathing particles around the player.
If a player is wearing a turtle shell in their helmet slot while out of water or in a bubble column, they will receive Water Breathing for 10 seconds. This effect won't start counting down until the player goes underwater. This essentially gives the player 10 extra seconds of breath underwater.
Equipping a turtle shell will also provide the player with 2 (
) defense points, which is the same amount of defense that golden, chain, and iron helmets offer (however, diamond helmets offer 3 (![]()
)). This means that for damage done to the player while wearing a turtle shell, 8% of the damage will be absorbed by the turtle shell.
Turtle shells have 276 durability, which is more than any type of armor except for diamond.

A spider eye is a poisonous food and brewing item.
Obtaining
Mob loot
Spiders
Spiders and cave spiders have a 1 chance of dropping a spider eye when killed by a player or tamed wolf, but not when killed by environmental damage (such as falling). The maximum amount of spider eyes is increased by 1 per level of Looting. The chance of a spider not dropping any spider eyes can be found using the formula <code>2 / (Looting Level + 3)</code>. For example, Looting III gives a 1 chance of not dropping any spider eyes. All other amounts have an equal chance of occurring.
Witches
Witches have a chance of dropping 0–6 spider eyes upon death. This is increased by 3 per level of Looting, for a maximum of 0-15 spider eyes.
Chest loot
spider-eye
Usage
Food
When eaten, a spider eye restores 2 hunger points and 3.2 saturation points, giving a nourishment value of 1.6. It also applies a Poison effect lasting 5 seconds to the player, causing damage, which reduces hunger/saturation by 6 points.

Trivia
* be, bowls are actually more fuel efficient than sticks. If 6 wood planks are crafted into 8 bowls, 8 items can be smelted; but if those are crafted into 12 sticks, only 6 items can be smelted. This can be useful when the player only has access to Nether wood types, which cannot be used as fuel.
