Material type?
Notch has mentioned a "material type" (at least, I think that's what he called it) for various blocks; I'm aware of three different types - stone, glass, and wood. He has mentioned it specifically in relation to Glowstone, which used to be a stone material type, but got changed to glass in the same update that it was changed to drop more Glowstone Dust and require less to craft (all as I recall, at least).
