Template:Infobox The Texture Update is an update released in Java Edition 1.14[1], Bedrock Edition 1.10.0[2] (with further amendments in Bedrock Edition 1.11.0), and PlayStation 4 Edition 1.90. The update changes most of the textures in the game,[3] except for a few iconic textures like the creeper. The textures were developed primarily by JAPPA (Jasper Boerstra). The original textures (with the exception of leather horse armor) are available as a resource pack/texture pack built in-game‌[Java Edition only] or as a separate download‌[Bedrock Edition only] (named "Programmer Art" in Java Edition, and "Classic Textures" in Bedrock Edition).[4][5]

Missed textures

While the majority of textures have been updated to conform to the new art style, the following have been missed out;

  • Signs (with the exception of crimson and warped signs) still use the old planks and log textures. (In Bedrock Edition, only oak signs were missed) [6]
  • Paintings still use an old planks texture on the rear, edges and frame.[7]
  • Dyed versions of terracotta have not been updated, although their undyed version has.[8]
  • The top texture of the observer is still largely based on the old "polished cobblestone" texture, rather than its updated version.[9]
  • The cobblestone part of the piston is still largely based on the old "polished cobblestone" texture, rather than its updated version.
  • The spectral arrow, in entity form, appears much closer to the old spectral arrow texture than the new one.[10]
  • The Wither skull projectile uses the old face texture, rather the new one.[11]
  • The hand texture of the Drowned uses an the old Zombie hand texture rather than the new one.[12]
  • The bedrock texture in natural end crystals has not been updated at all.[13]
  • The jungle door item does not match the shape of the new block texture.[14]
  • The cactus bottom texture still uses the color scheme of the old cactus side texture.[15]
  • The bark ring on the dark oak log top texture still uses color scheme of the old dark oak log side texture.[16]
  • The brewing stand GUI still uses outlines based on the old glass bottle texture, rather than its updated version.[17]
  • The enchanting table GUI still uses outlines based on the old Lapis Lazuli texture, rather than its updated version.[18]
  • The empty armor slot textures in the Inventory still use the old textures, rather than their updated versions.[19]
  • The inventory and toast GUIs still use the old Knowledge Book texture, rather than its updated version.[20]
  • The hammer on the Anvil GUI uses an outdated iron palette.[21]

  • Spectator icons, such as the 'exit menu' and 'teleport to player' are still based on the old barrier and eye of ender textures.

  • The pack.png for the default resource pack still uses the old Grass and Cobblestone textures, rather than their updated version.[24]

  • The default player skins, "Steve" and "Alex", have not been updated at all, creating a mismatch between the "Steve" texture and the zombie texture, which are supposed to be related.

Potato yield can be increased using a tool enchanted with [[Fortune]], with Fortune III harvesting an average of {{frac|5|3|7}} potatoes. [[Bone meal]] can be used to mature the potato to its last stage of growth.

The first two potatoes always drop, and then three more attempts are made to drop a potato with a success rate of 57.14286% to yield the extra 0–3 drops. Each level of Fortune enchantment increases the number of attempts by one.

When farmed, potatoes require 8 [[Block tick|stages]] to grow. However, there are four ''visible'' stages due to having only four distinct textures: every two stages have the same texture, except that growth stage 7 keeps the same appearance as stages 5–6, so that only stage 8 has the final, mature appearance. Planted potatoes require a light level of 9 or greater to continue growing. If the light level is 7 or below, the crops instantly un-plant themselves ("pop off"). It is not possible to plant potatoes if the light level is too low.

Crops grow faster if the farmland they are planted in is [[Farmland#Hydration|hydrated]]. Using [[bone meal]] on crops also increases the speed of growth by randomly increasing their growth stage by 2 to 5.

Crops break if pushed by a [[piston]] or if their supporting farmland breaks or turns to dirt (i.e. by being trampled), dropping their usual drops.

Mob heads can be oriented in 16 different directions on top of a block, and 4 directions on the sides of blocks, similar to [[sign]]s. They can be placed on top of, or beside each other by shift clicking.

When placed and powered by redstone, the piglin and dragon heads plays an animation. The piglin head flaps its ears (2 times per second for the right ear and 2.5 times per second for the left ear) while the dragon head opens and closes its mouth repeatedly (2 times per second). Placing a head above a [[note block]] causes the note block to play the corresponding mob's {{cd|ambient}} sound when activated. The only exception is the creeper head; as creepers don't make {{cd|ambient}} sounds, the note block plays the {{cd|primed}} (hissing) sound instead.

The block below the note block does not affect the mob sound it creates.

==Player skins==

Human heads have an extra usage for map makers, they can be given [[Chunk format#Entity Format|NBT data]] so that they appear with the skin of any ''Minecraft'' account. This means if a player knows that a specific account has a head that is desired to display, the NBT data can be edited to make it appear.

The command to give the player a head with the skin of another player is {{cmd|give @s minecraft:player_head{SkullOwner:"<''PlayerName''>"} }}. Commonly, this kind of head is called a custom head. 

Another command to give the player a head with another player's skin is {{cmd|give @s minecraft:player_head{SkullOwner:{Id:"<''PlayerUUID''>",Properties:{textures:[{Value:"<''SkinURL''>"}]} } } }}. Note that it is therefore necessary to be connected to the internet to load the texture of a skin, whatever the property used.
When they are loaded for the first time by the client, the skins textures are cached in {{code|[[.minecraft]]\assets\skins\(subfolders)\(files)}}.
If the client does not have access to the internet when it first loads, the player's head displays a regular head (Steve's skin) which is also cached.
Afterwards, even if the client reconnects to the internet, in order to display the skin correctly, it is necessary to clear the cache manually by deleting the recently created files in {{code|[[.minecraft]]\assets\skins\(subfolder)}}, then restarting the game.

A [[dispenser]] with glass bottles can be used to collect the honey without angering the bees. The honey bottle appears as an item in the dispenser's inventory. If the dispenser is full, the honey bottle is shot out.

To drink a honey bottle, press and hold {{control|use}} while it is selected in the hotbar. Drinking one restores {{hunger|6}} [[hunger]] and 1.2 hunger [[Hunger#Mechanics|saturation]]. Consuming the item also has the benefit of removing any [[poison]] effect applied to the player. Unlike drinking [[Milk Bucket|milk]], other applied effects are not removed upon drinking a honey bottle.

Honey bottles can be drunk even with a full hunger bar. Drinking a honey bottle takes 25% longer than eating other food - 2 seconds - and has a unique sound.

A sugar cane block drops itself as an item if a piston tries to push it (trying to pull it does nothing) or moves a block into its space.

*When a sugar cane is broken at the second level, the time resets (for example, if a two-block high sugar cane is broken, but is just about to grow to the third stage, it would reset that time).
*By placing more sugar canes on top of a sugar cane plant, it is possible to create tall sugar canes (up to y=319, the maximum height for building), although they do not naturally grow this high.
*Before sugar cane received an official name, they were sometimes referred to as [[bamboo]], a block added 9 years later. Other names were "reeds" and "papyrus".
