The Texture Update is an update released in Java Edition 1.14[1], Bedrock Edition 1.10.0[2] (with further amendments in Bedrock Edition 1.11.0), and PlayStation 4 Edition 1.90. The update changes most of the textures in the game,[3] except for a few iconic textures like the creeper. The textures were developed primarily by JAPPA (Jasper Boerstra). The original textures (with the exception of leather horse armor) are available as a resource pack/texture pack built in-game[Java Edition only] or as a separate download[Bedrock Edition only] (named "Programmer Art" in Java Edition, and "Classic Textures" in Bedrock Edition).[4][5]

Preview textures
Some unreleased textures Jappa made when developing the final ones for the update.
Missed textures
While the majority of textures have been updated to conform to the new art style, the following have been missed out;
- Dyed versions of terracotta have not been updated, although their undyed version has.[6]
- The top texture of the observer is still largely based on the old "polished cobblestone" texture, rather than its updated version.[7]
- The Wither skull projectile uses the old face texture, rather the new one.[8]
- The hand texture of the Drowned uses an old Zombie hand texture rather than the new one.[9] This also affects Zombie Villagers, Illagers and Vexes, which is confirmed to be intended.[10]
- The bedrock texture in natural end crystals has not been updated at all.[11]
- The cactus bottom texture still uses the color scheme of the old cactus side texture.[12]
- The bark ring on the dark oak log top texture still uses color scheme of the old dark oak log side texture.[13]
- The Nether Wart, Blaze Rod and Blaze Powder items still use their old texture.
- The enchanting table GUI still uses outlines based on the old Lapis Lazuli texture, rather than its updated version.[14]
- The empty armor slot textures in the Inventory still use the old textures, rather than their updated versions.[15]
- The inventory and toast GUIs still use the old Knowledge Book texture, rather than its updated version.[16]
- The hammer on the Anvil GUI uses an outdated iron palette.[17]
- The Tutorial hints still uses the old Oak Planks texture, rather than its updated version.[18]
- Spectator icons, such as the 'exit menu' and 'teleport to player' are still based on the old barrier and eye of ender textures.
- The icons on Statistics still use old item textures, rather than their updated versions.
- The options background still uses the old Dirt texture, rather than its updated version.[19]
- The pack.png for the default resource pack still uses the old Grass and Cobblestone textures, rather than their updated version.[20]
- The favicon for the game window uses the old crafting table texture, rather than the new one.[21]
- The slab part of the armor stand still uses the old smooth stone texture, rather than the new one.[22]
- Chests, Trapped Chests and Christmas Chests still use their old textures, rather than updated ones.
- The default player skins, "Steve" and "Alex", have not been updated at all, creating a mismatch between the "Steve" texture and the zombie texture, which are supposed to be related.
- Podzol and Dirt Path still use old side textures rather than updated ones, even though their top textures are updated.[23][24]
- While normal pumpkin stem and attached melon stem use updated textures, attached pumpkin stem and normal melon stem still use the old ones.
- Grass Blocks still use their old top texture rather than updated one, even though their new top texture has appeared in Texture Update Betapack V1 & V2.

1.14Extension DPL<ul><li>Lava Bucket<br/> A lava bucket is a bucket filled with lava. == Obtaining == === Interacting === To fill an empty bucket with lava, use it on a lava source block or lava in a cauldron. The block is consumed in the process. Flowing lava does not fill a bucket. If there is a lava source above the pointed dripstone stalactite, there is a 15 (~5.9%) chance for it to completely fill an empty cauldron within 10 blocks under the tip with lava after a random tick. This lava can then be scooped with a bucket, making it a renewable resource. ==Usage== A lava bucket can be used to place down lava sources with the Use Item button. Doing so gives the player the bucket back. Lava buckets can be used to replace some transparent, non-full blocks such as tall grass and water, both flowing and sources. java, lava buckets can be used to break Nether portal blocks by placing the lava on the side of a block next to the portal block. === Smelting === A lava bucket can be used as an efficient fuel. It has the longest burning value of 1000 seconds, compared to 800 seconds for a coal block (a lava bucket smelts 100 items, and a coal block smelts 80). After smelting starts, the lava bucket turns into an empty bucket. === Trading === bedrock, journeyman-level armorer villagers buy a lava bucket for one emerald as part of their trades. java, journeyman-level armorer villagers have a 40% chance of offering to buy a lava bucket for one emerald. === Cauldrons === A lava bucket can be used to fill a cauldron with lava. The lava damages any entity standing inside the cauldron, unless the entity is immune to fire damage.<!-- ex: nether mobs--> Flowing water or waterlogging does not affect the lava in the cauldron. == Sounds == je: be: ==Data values== === ID === java: bedrock: == Achievements == Super Fuel == Advancements == Hot Stuff ==History== java infdev java alpha {{History||v1.1.0|Buckets of lava can now be used to fuel a furnace for 100 smelts, consuming the lava and the bucket. Each defense point reduces any damage dealt to the player that is absorbed by armor by 4%, increasing additively with the number of defense points. Different materials and combinations of armor provide different levels of defense. Any "hit" from a damage source that can be blocked by armor removes one point of durability from each piece of armor worn for every 4 of incoming damage (rounded down, but never below 1). Damage taken that armor doesn't protect (such as falling or drowning) does not damage the armor, even if it is enchanted to protect against that type of damage. The following chart displays how many hits boots can endure. Netherite armor is not damaged by lava or fire when worn. {| class="wikitable" data-description="Boots durability" |- ! Other boots do not attract piglins but can be worn by them. They prefer stronger boots over weaker boots, with one major exception: They always prefer golden boots over all other boots, throwing out stronger boots to equip them. Enchanted boots are preferred over unenchanted boots. === Powder snow=== Leather boots can be used to safely cross powder snow without sinking in it. The block behaves similar to scaffolding, allowing the player to sink in by pressing crouch and move up by pressing jump. The boots also prevent the wearer from taking freezing damage. ===Decoration=== It is possible to upgrade armor with trims. This requires a Smithing Template, an armor piece, and an ingot or crystal (iron-ingotiron ingot/copper-ingotcopper ingot/gold-ingotgold ingot/netherite-ingotnetherite ingot/emeraldemerald/redstone-dustredstone dust/lapis-lazulilapis lazuli/amethyst-shardamethyst shard/nether-quartznether quartz/diamonddiamond). It can be powered with coal or charcoal to propel it across a rail line for a limited time, which can be used to move other minecarts. ==Obtaining== Minecarts with furnace can be retrieved by attacking them, and by doing so it drops as an item. ===Crafting=== ==Usage== Minecarts with furnaces are placed in the same way as other minecarts. It does not have a graphical user interface, unlike a furnace. Minecarts with furnaces can be powered, done by feeding fuel (coal or charcoal) into the furnace minecart with the use button. The fuel is consumed immediately and it starts to move in the same direction the player clicked toward. Pressing use always turns it to that direction, even when not holding coal. Any piece of fuel, added at any time, increases the total range by an additional 3600 ticks (equal to 180 seconds or 3 minutes). The upper limit is 32767 ticks, approximately 27 minutes. When powered, minecarts with furnaces cover 240m per minute (about 4 m/s, slightly slower than walking speed) or 720m per piece of coal. They do not accelerate beyond this speed when going downhill or on active powered rails, and as long as they remain powered, they do not slow down when going uphill, on inactive powered rails, or when pushing or pulling other minecarts. If a powered furnace minecart is derailed and then pushed back onto a rail, it starts moving again in the direction it came from, so they are not easily turned around in this state unless a player is nearby to redirect it with use. Minecarts with furnaces can climb up steep inclines while pushing other minecarts as long as they have fuel. If a minecart with furnace reaches a slope while pulling another minecart, the pulled minecart is switched to the forward position so that it can be pushed along the slope instead of pulled. When a minecart with furnace bumps into another minecart or multiple minecarts, the other minecarts are pushed forward with great speed. The furnace minecart continues on with its own speed. Because of this speed difference, some of the minecarts may end up inside unloaded chunks on straight tracks. ===Train mechanics=== A furnace minecart can be made to pull up to four other minecarts. All minecarts in this train move at the constant speed of the furnace minecart. Trains are formed when a minecart is pushed into the back of a powered furnace minecart or a short-enough train. These shunts are fragile at best and easily come undone, but some methods are stronger than others. For example, pushing a minecart into a furnace minecart and then powering the furnace gives a weaker shunt than pushing the furnace minecart into the other minecart against a wall, and then powering the furnace in the other direction. A high-speed minecart running into the back of a furnace minecart going in the same direction automatically creates a weak shunt with it, pulling it along. Pulling a minecart with TNT causes it to explode. {| class="wikitable" |+Pulled minecart/Shunt behavior !Condition !Result |- |Furnace loses power/speed||Shunt comes undone |- |Entity bumping besides those part of the train||Jettisoned forward |- |Upward sloped track||Jettisoned forward |- |Downward sloped track||Jettisoned forward (strong shunt) or shunt comes undone (weak shunt) |- |90° turn in track||Jettisoned backward |- |Turn toward north/south or east/west that is not the direction the train was shunted in||Train derails |} When a train comes to a turn, the shunt comes undone with the pulled minecart jettisoned backward. The correct way to make such a turn is having the shunt undone before a turn, and then make the two rejoin on a straight rail later by having the pulled cart catch up with the minecart with furnace. Since the train runs slower on a fully powered track than a normal minecart (~5 m/s compared to 8m/s), a train pulled by an unpowered furnace minecart is ideal for AFK farms involving breaking or placing blocks like nether wart. ==Properties== The coal is not stored as an item in the entity, but in the object data in the fuel property as a time in ticks. Fuel is a short value, i.e. a maximum of 32767 ticks, which is about 27 minutes. However, {{cmd|/summon furnace_minecart ~ ~ ~ {Fuel:32000} }} alone doesn't make it go since it doesn't have a direction. It can be right-clicked on a track to give it a direction, or it can be summoned with the properties PushX and PushZ set, which are responsible for the direction. The <code>Motion</code> property of every entity allows for movement of the minecart, but it does not direct the minecart to move on its own. ==Sounds== Java:<br> Minecarts with furnaces use the Friendly Creatures sound category for entity-dependent sound events. Bedrock: ==Data values== ===ID=== ===Entity data=== Minecarts with furnace have entity data associated with them that contain various properties of the entity. java: Entity format bedrock: : See Bedrock Edition level format/Entity format. ==History== java alpha java beta java {{History||1.0.0|snap=?|Each piece of coal now powers a minecart with furnace for 3 minutes, so that adding another piece of coal at any time increases the total range by another 3 minutes. Journeyman-level cartographer villagers sell woodland explorer maps for 14 emeralds and a compass. java, if the cartographer is in the Nether or the End, either spawned or transported, the trades for the map do not unlock. However, bedrock, the cartographer trades for the map are unlocked, but the purchased map shows the same layout as in the corresponding dimension and shows no destination structure, but if cartographer trades are unlocked in an old world type (prior-1.11.0), the game stops ticking. In Java Edition, each cartographer sells its own unique explorer map that points to a different location than other cartographers. Purchasing another explorer map from the same cartographer results in the same explorer map. In Bedrock Edition, a cartographer sells an explorer map that points to the nearest location, regardless of whether it is explored or previously mapped by another cartographer.<!-- start to glitched out--> === Chest loot === Treasure maps, in contrast to explorer maps, generate in underwater ruins or in shipwrecks. buried-treasure-map == Usage == Map#Mapping === Locating structures === There are three types of explorer maps: woodland, ocean, and buried treasure. The maps differ from a normal map, in that it shows the area's land-water outline, with an orange striated (striped) texture for water, and the blank map texture for land. The maps show a section of land that contains a woodland mansion, monument or buried treasure respectively. This may not be the nearest such structure to the player. The structures are displayed as a small icon. If the player icon is smaller than it would be on a normal map, that means the player is a great distance away. When the player is less than 1027 blocks away from the map border, the icon returns to the proper size. When the player reaches the map's area of land (512×512), the map fills in like a normal map. The basic functions of a buried treasure explorer map are similar to that of the other two. However, instead of showing the structure icon on the map, it shows a red X instead. The buried treasure structure is located on the same X and Z coordinates as the middle of the X (the player marker may need to be aligned with the bottom of the middle 2×2 pixel square of the X). To locate the chest spot, hold the treasure map with both hands, not in the offhand slot. === Cloning === {{Crafting |showdescription=1 |shapeless=1 |name=Explorer Map<br>(cloned) |;;;Empty Map;Empty Map;Empty Map;Empty Map;Empty Map |;;;;Empty Map;Empty Map;Empty Map;Empty Map |;;;;;Empty Map;Empty Map;Empty Map |Ocean Explorer Map; Woodland Explorer Map; Buried Treasure Map; Ocean Explorer Map; Woodland Explorer Map; Buried Treasure Map; Ocean Explorer Map; Woodland Explorer Map |Empty Map |;;;;;;Empty Map;Empty Map |;Empty Map;Empty Map;Empty Map;Empty Map;Empty Map;Empty Map;Empty Map |;;Empty Map;Empty Map;Empty Map;Empty Map;Empty Map;Empty Map |;;;;;;;Empty Map |Output= Ocean Explorer Map,2; Woodland Explorer Map,3; Buried Treasure Map,4; Ocean Explorer Map,5; Woodland Explorer Map,6; Buried Treasure Map,7; Ocean Explorer Map,8; Woodland Explorer Map,9 |type= Miscellaneous |description=The output has the same map center as the input map, and the same monument, woodland mansion or buried treasure marker. Also, if two cartographers unlock the explorer map trades approximately at the same place and at the same time, the map locations are usually identical. This sometimes also happens when finding multiple treasure maps from ocean ruins. * Explorer maps fill as the chunks are generated, rather than when the player holds them while in the area; leaving an explorer map while exploring the area still fills the map. * Buried treasure explorer maps are named Buried Treasure Map java while bedrock, they are named Treasure Map. * It is possible for a cartographer to give a monument or woodland mansion explorer map for areas where the structures would have spawned in the world, but were unable to as a result of terrain generation. As a result, explorer maps, unfortunately, don't always guarantee that a structure exists at the purported location. This is most common with woodland mansion explorer maps, due to its generation algorithm. * On Bedrock Edition, inventory editors and add-ons can be used to create Explorer Maps that lead to any structure. == Gallery == <gallery> File:Explorer Maps.png|An ocean explorer map in the off-hand, a woodland explorer map in the main hand, and a cartographer villager in between them. Pickaxes have different amounts of uses based on the type: * Wooden: 60 * Stone: 132 * Iron: 251 * Golden: 33 * Diamond: 1562 * Netherite: 2032 Different qualities of pickaxe are required to successfully harvest certain ores and blocks. For example, while stone can be mined with any pickaxe, gold ore must be mined with an iron, diamond, or netherite pickaxe, or else the player harvests no ore. Different pickaxes also mine many materials at different speeds: ==== Speed ==== The following table shows the time it takes to break each type of block. * A <span style="background-color:#FFC7CE;color:#9C0006;">red</span> background indicates that the block cannot be harvested with that type of pickaxe. * A <span style="background-color:#FFFFDD;color:#8A7600;">yellow</span> background indicates that the block cannot be harvested with that type of pickaxe, but still drops something. * A <span style="background-color:#C6EFCE;color:#006100;">green</span> background indicates that the block can be harvested with that type of pickaxe. <!-- Table is sorted by hardness (mining time with diamond shows well), then by name --> {|class="wikitable collapsible collapsed" data-description="Mining time by block" style="background-color: transparent;" ! Trivia
- On April 1, 2018, the Texture Update was "released" on Java Edition as an April Fools' joke and the new 8-bit default version of textures were released for Java Edition. The new textures were available in versions of 1.12.x and versions from 17w43a to 18w11a. It was announced that all editions of Minecraft would get these new textures. The new textures were actually the original textures using 8-bit color, leading to a drastic reduction in detail.[25]
- The textures were reverted to the way they were before on April 2, 2018.[26] These textures cannot be re-activated by setting the device's date to April 1, 2018.
- The Texture Update Beta Pack gallery on the Minecraft Marketplace in Bedrock Edition uses screenshots from the Java Edition.
- In a now deleted Tweet, JAPPA announced on November 10, 2017 that the new textures would be available on "all versions" of Minecraft. However, the update has only been released on the Java Edition, Bedrock Edition, and PlayStation 4 Edition. The Xbox 360 Edition, Xbox One Edition, PlayStation 3 Edition, PlayStation Vita Edition, Wii U Edition, Nintendo Switch Edition, and New Nintendo 3DS Edition still have not received this update.[27]
- The "polished cobblestone" on the piston prior to the texture update used to match the furnace top texture. After the texture update, they no longer share the same design.
