End portals have an unobtainable item form corresponding to its block ID, which has interesting model behavior. It can be obtained via inventory editors with numeric item ID 119.
In this version, players would immediately start out with this item upon generating a world or when respawning.
If an end portal item already existed in the hotbar, using pick block on an existing end portal block would switch the hotbar to select that block like with any other item.
The player no longer starts out with this item on world generation or when respawning.
Beta 1.9 Prerelease 4
When attempted to be placed in the Nether or End, placement will fail but the placement sound and hand animation will still play. Replaceable blocks such as fluids, grasses and vines are deleted, and the item is also consumed in survival mode.
End portal items have an unstable item model which changes depending on blocks which are targeted or in loaded chunks. It uses this model in inventories, when held in first or third person view or as a dropped item.
The end portal item initially uses a full cube model, like full cube blocks do.
If a placed end portal block is targeted,[more information needed] the item model will change to a flat plane, matching the shape of the wireframe outline box that can be seen near the bottom of an end portal block when targeted.
Beta 1.9 Prerelease 4
The end portal item now uses this texture in inventories, when held in first or third person view or as a dropped item.
Beta 1.9 Prerelease 5
The end portal item now uses this texture in inventories, when held in first or third person view or as a dropped item.
This is due to the grass top texture changing in this version.
