Non-permanent torches

Have we got any proof of Notch having said this or is it an unsubstantiated rumour? If we do, can it be added to the page, please?

Check the Halloween Update if you haven't already. Sadly, this is true. -Funkadacious

How do you use this block?

How is this block used/activated/lit? I can't get mine to produce light.

Right click to place it and it will automatically produce a small amount of light. --Jomskylark 20:45, 2 December 2010 (CST)

whats indev?

Indev, or /indev/, refers to the in development version playable by users who have paid for the game. The torch block is only available in this version.

Environmental trigger error

An error in this article: water interacting with torches is not the only environmental trigger. Daylight on mushrooms or day/torchlight on flowers holding up sand is another. More detail on the airlock talk page.

Build

so how they are build?

Do you mean "built"? If so, then see crafting. --Zaneo 01:44, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

Torches: Temporary lighting!

With the new update coming out, torches (the primary form of lighting things) will become a temperary light source, only lighting things for a certain amount of time before burning out. How will people be able to light their homes without permanent torches? There are many ways, such as:

-Lava Skylights/Floorlights: Dig a hole at least 2 blocks deep into the ceiling or floor (or even the wall). Then, place glass so that the lava does not escape when placed. After glass is placed, place as much lava as you please inside, illuminating a fair amount of space, and it looks impressive to boot!

-Fire: Burn things! Be careful though, fire may spread depending on what materials you built your home/building out of.

-Skylights/Windows: Replace parts of the ceiling or wall with glass, allowing sunlight to penetrate into the room. Be careful though, it does not work at night.

-Keeping Flint and Steel on hand: Relighting your torches as they go out is a simple way of adding light to your home. May be tedious after a while, but it works!

-Lanterns: When the Halloween Update comes out, lanterns provide permanent lighting. Craft a load of these, and not worry about lighting again!

Any other ideas on how to create light for ones home? Please respond with your own ideas! -Funkadacious

Burning "helldirt" could be used as a torch, as it will burn forever unless put out
If Notch doesn't fix the eternal fire glitch, we could just burn logs. PurpleKiwi 23:23, 26 October 2010 (CDT)

Light radius

Shouldn't something be added explaining the radius of light that is generated by torches and its tie in with monster spawning? Niksko 21:36, 28 October 2010 (CDT)

light radius is explained more in the Light article.Toadbert

Unlit torch image

I noticed there is a tile of an unlit torch in terrain.png. I don't know how long its been there but with all the talk of torches eventually going out, would it be prudent for someone to add this image to the page? --XipXoom 10:38, 1 November 2010 (UTC)

No, that is an unlit Redstone Torch. –ultradude25 (T|C) 10:45, 1 November 2010 (UTC)
Then unlit redstone torches have two different tiles? I'm referring to the tile just below the lit torch tile, not the one just below the lit redstone torch tile. Are they both for redstone? --XipXoom 05:49, 1 November 2010 (CDT)
That would be a lever... –ultradude25 (T|C) 07:09, 1 November 2010 (CDT)
Hah, so it is. I am all sorts of fail today apparently. Thanks for setting me straight. --XipXoom 12:14, 1 November 2010 (UTC)

Torch placement

I'd like to start a "torch placement" section or page that lists A) blocks torches can be placed on top of, and B) blocks torches can be placed on the side of. The overview part will also talk about how in any cube meter, there can only be one torch (i.e., no two wall torches in the same block on the two sides of a 1-block-wide corridor). I'll start on this later today if no one else does, or points me to an existing place with all that info. --meioziz 16:06, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

Well, I haven't gotten around to testing this with every block yet, so if anyone wants to take a crack first, please do. Otherwise this will just have to come later. --meioziz 17:24, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
Got the blocks torches can be placed on in a table, needs some sorting (like place-able, not place-able, and special placement) and corrections though Adi Tetac 23:04, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
New glitch in the 1.2 update I think. I just was able to place a torch on a block of air, but it appears to actually be attaching itself to the BOTTOM of a dirt block in the cave I'm in... Dargus 22:59, 13 January 2011 (UTC)

Torches vanish on contact with water?

I was testing a tree growth alarm, and I found that in 1.2_02, torches no longer simply drop off the wall on contact with water - they vanish entirely! I have seen videos (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_profilepage&v=HdzpaLxAjIU#t=96s) that show this working, but I can't seem to get a torch to drop a resource - they just vanish. Is this a part of a new update, or am I doing it wrong? :) Bigreader 22:18, 30 January 2011 (UTC)
