Un-merge
Minecraftforum.net seem to have discovered that there are ruins and strongholds. While strongholds spawn once per world, ruins are not limited. I can't confirm this, but they are apparently doing extensive testing about this. If this is true though, then stronghold and ruins need to be separated again. ---- JerreyRough

Merge

- Support, with comment: Because "stronghold" is the only name used by Mojang (Notch) so far, and "ruin" is completely unofficial, I'd say Ruins should be merged into Stronghold, instead of the other way round. Chests?
Would there be chests containing valuble stuff in the Strongholds
- The stronghold I explored was mixed with a mineshaft, so I cannot confirm if the chest were from the mineshaft or stronghold. I CAN however confirm there were chest with paper in the stronghold library. MrDylan 22:38, 10 September 2011 (UTC)

Yes. You can find some very valubal things such as diamond, apples and even golden apples!

Only once per world?

Contents of strong hold
In a stronghold, i found it can have a library with a chest that had paper in it, a large jail and some kind of possible boss room
Seed: "1448524118" (without "") at x -873, y 35 You will need to dig directly down at x -873, y 35. Then you will find the stronghold.
I have also found these and among other things I've seen an area with a fountian and flowers like a garden a place that eemed like the bunkers and (I was wondering are the flowers just random generation or was it a garden?) the most notable area I've seen by far are large library like rooms so If you need a voucher I'll...vouch.EDIT:It seems that they also have closets In it I found a chrst and in the chest there is bread stacked by 3(two of them)and 2 unstacked bread and coal I am going to explore further.EDIT:I did what most don't and took pics of what i found in stronghold http://desacabose.imgur.com/all/ Desacobose 02:04, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

No strongholds on converted maps
On worlds that have been converted to 1.8, already explored chunks will not update, meaning no strongholds. Should this be added and is there any workaround? Dragonfloe 13:15, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
The bottom floor
I think it's worth noting that strongholds can extend beyond bedrock, essentially making the bottom floor of a stronghold a room within The Void. I'll post pics in just a minute.
Okay, so I can't upload pictures for some reason, so I'll just link to it and see if it works for anyone else. This is one of the iron bar rooms of a stronghold, inside the void. Yes I'm on creative mode, but only so I could explore the stronghold without getting killed.

- I appreciate the attempt, but having looked at the picture I don't feel it's clear enough to add to the article. If someone else disagrees, they most certainly can upload it. - No, it's not "in" the void. It's simply at the bottom of the map. The map gets darker and more shadowy as you get nearer the lowest levels. It's one of the basic additions in 1.8. -Riot

- Maybe, but don't the particles floating through the air suggest that this is, in fact, the Void? Those particles aren't supposed to appear until the Void is actually reached. That said, the fact that the Void effect appears above Y-0 is very odd. Though it might not be limited to just strongholds. Ederek Cole 22:38, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
- It is a feature in 1.8 - a "void fog". The lower you are, the less you will see. Lower than Y=10 you will see a "void particles"
Coordinates section
When playing in 1.8 using the seed given in the coordinates section, I came across the VERY small (a 2x1 hole in the ground) entrance to an unmentioned, but expansive, Abandoned Mineshaft close to spawn (before the first night, after setting off in a random direction. There were at least 5 chests that I found, 2 of which contained diamonds, and was bisected several times by ravines. I feel that this should be mentioned, and I recorded the coordinates. They are as follows:
X: -118.35712816307384 Y: 71.62000000476837 Z: 217.6800020144205
Also, this entrance requires the player enduring a long drop. Said entrance is located on the upper river bank, between a foresty biome and the desert.

Stronghold Explorer tool
There is a tool developed here: facepunch.com that allows you to input the seed number for your map and it then returns the 3 locations of the strongholds.--Sxerks 03:07, 18 September 2011 (UTC)

Some seeds don't generate any strongholds at all.
After searching a 1500 block radius of spawn 3 times (incl hacks to see underground), I've found that the seed 'infiniteapples' does not generate any strongholds at all. I later used the stronghold finder, and found ravines (sometimes 3 or 4) where the stronghold should have been. Thus it seems that when generating strongholds, there is a small chance that ravines (or possibly other features) will form instead. It's also possible that the number of strongholds is in fact variable, and may range from 0 to 3. This seed has been confirmed in both SSP and SMP. Ghost2 12:09, 18 September 2011 (UTC)

Unnecessary Subtitle

Can we confirm this?
"The three strongholds are spawned at equal angles from the center point of the world (that is, each stronghold is 120 degrees from the others, measured from the origin)."

Now infinite?

- The source is probably a tweet by @jeb_ who said the limit will be removed with 1.9. However, I created a new map with the 1.9 Prerelease which got 3 stongholds within 1000 block from my spawning point. But although I explored a square of 7000x7000 blocks of the map, no further strongholds were generated. So I assume the limit of three is still in place. --Obi-Wahn 15:13, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

- 1.9pre3 spawned strongholds at x: 0 z: 0 while 1.9pre5 does not. Generating a new map should spawn the strongholds elsewhere. Glass towers
it should be noted that in P.R. 3 sometime glass towers will spawn that are as high as the map. once you break them and get to the bottom your in a stronghold... 98.250.202.109 19:42, 6 October 2011 (UTC)
Jeb mentioned in a tweet that he forgot to remove the "debug towers" from strongholds in P.R. 3. I imagine these may be the glass towers you describe.

If anyone wants an easy seed to investigate for themselves, "pineapple" will spawn you almost right on top of a stronghold if you have the third prerelease for 1.9.
Stronghold Section Definitions?
I just raided my first dungeon, and can easily see how their assembled with different sections in a sort of random-jigsaw pattern, with rooms and hallways being C&P'd from templates.
My point is, should we make distinctions between the Libaries/Portal Rooms/Fountain rooms etc etc to get a real understanding of the dungeon crawling mechanics of it? --82.33.40.92 20:29, 12 October 2011 (UTC)

Rare Items? Really?

Yes sir. There rare items in something that only spawns 3 times on a world.

New type of Stronghold?

Is the stronghold entrance exposed to the ground layer or is that only on the picture?
