0xffff-1 chunks is a hexadecimal number -1
0xFFFF is a hex number, equal to 65535 (the high extreme of the unsigned 16 bit integer), -1, which then equates to 65534. 65535 is also 2^16-1. Correct me if I'm wrong on the hex->dec conversion I'm too lazy to open a new tab. Since I cannot edit the Splash page, I need someone who can to do it.

Also, the Drr! Drr! Drr! reference is partially due to the old "Far Lands" aesthetic; the weird holes in the wall reminded people of the comic.

Thanks for the fish
I believe the splash mentioned in the title not only refers the addition of fish, but also the line "So long and thanks for all the fish" from the intro to A Hitchikers Guide to the Galeraxy. The song is sung by dolphins, which were also added in 1.13
