"Only Reasonable Way to Get Wool?[]

This is a very questionable opinion. Since sheep are not yet persistent, the most efficient way to get wool is probably to build a neutral mob grinder. You only get 1 wool per sheep, but you should be able to get a much higher quantity of wool with a good grinder. I haven't actually built a grinder in 1.7 yet, but based on experience with other neutral grinders previously, it should work well.

The article doesn't mention the improved direct-use yield: I've observed shears to yield 3-4 wool. Anyone seen 1 or 2? This would improve the direct-harvest method to an average of 3.5 (or possibly 3) blocks of wool. Drlucky 21:08, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

Destroying Wool Using Shears Doesn't Take a Use[]

Do you think this is a bug or was intentional? I think its a bug, since shovels destroy dirt faster and take uses. Why not shears? And shears take a use when destroying leaves, why not wool? Jtlcr777 00:08, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

I have the same problem.. Has this problem a solution?

Shouldn't the page title be "Shear" rather than "Shears"? - DarkAuk 21:38, 5 June 2011 (UTC)

Blade shears always come by two. – Scaler (t) 21:48, 5 June 2011 (UTC)

Ok, thanks. - DarkAuk 21:53, 5 June 2011 (UTC)

Leaf Decay[]

Wouldn't one need wood to keep the leaf blocks from decaying if they are placed? Khosumet 17:13, 7 June 2011 (UTC)

No, it would probably give you a new block called "topiary block", that would look like the leaves you took from the tree, only they wouldn't decay. Kekilrocks123 19:41, 7 June 2011 (UTC)

(The above is speculation, and we really don't know.) --{ Fishrock123 } (Talk) 20:21, 7 June 2011 (UTC)

I know that. I was just saying that would probably be how it would work. Kekilrocks123 22:37, 7 June 2011 (UTC)

You can place leaf blocks without logs and they won't start disappearing until one is broken. I've made houses out of leaves like this. --Mr. Fist 23:30, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
No, the leaves decay as usual. --TheKax 09:56, 3 July 2011 (UTC)

Prediction of the Secret 4th Use[]

I was thinking that since shears can diffuse TNT and cut away placeable leaf blocks, the fourth use must be to diffuse Creepers. Notch even said that Creepers are like crunchy leaves (http://twitter.com/#!/notch/status/27464490580), so this seems like a great prediction. Edit: Added reference. - DarkAuk 02:41, 12 June 2011 (UTC)

Erm. No. This would be ridiculous and spoil the whole point of creepers. Also... I edited your post for the truth. Dementis 20:50, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

I believe the last use is going to be for removing Cobweb (I'm guessing like leaves, they can be cut and destroyed, but this will allow you to obtain them as a placeable block). Someone asked Jeb on Twitter and he gave sort of a "I can't confirm or deny that" type response. Being Cobweb explains the "secret-ness" of it since that's not officially a supported block type yet.
Edit: The tweet in question: [1] --Warlock 20:57, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

How does it ruin the point of creepers? Maybe it could just do it once before it stops working on a regular creeper, or maybe it does no damage to creepers? Keep your mind open. This is Minecraft. As for the cutting cobweb thing, to me it seems logical, but can't we already do that by hand? Or were they changed in the latest update? - DarkAuk 04:03, 16 June 2011 (UTC)

I have no idea, I haven't played with Cobwebs at all. But they are not an "officially implemented feature" so it's very possible they will change before appearing in the game naturally. --Warlock 21:03, 16 June 2011 (UTC)
Actually the fourth use being cobwebs is true. They turn cobwebs into string. --TheKax 09:57, 3 July 2011 (UTC)

Article doesn't exist?[]

A link says the article has been moved, but as far as I can tell, the linked article is about branch mining and doesn't even mention shears.

Yeah.. something tells me someone is just advertising their blog. -Doirdyn 15:44, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, somebody was just spamming the article, probably since it's so current. Pale 16:56, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

Killing sheep[]

I just tried it, and I got one single wool by killing. When shaving with the shears I got 4... Anyone could confirm that killing sheep still gives wool (need to change the page then)

Confirmed: killing a sheep give 1 wool.Eleazzaar 18:11, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

I tried to use the recipe that is shown on the page and it doesn't work, anybody got any clue about why it's not working? –The preceding unsigned comment was added by Idunidas (Talk|Contribs) Please sign your posts with ~~~~

You need to update your game to the newest version. --TheKax 09:59, 3 July 2011 (UTC)

Extreme Usefulness: Apples[]

One thing I found with my apple farm is if you cut leaves with the shears, it drops apples, and yes, duh. But the other thing is, if you replace the leafs and break them again, I noticed it sometimes drops apples again.'

"As of Beta 1.9. they can harvest Red Mushrooms from a Mooshroom and turn it back into a Cow."

Is this a joke or what?-- 16:13, 25 September 2011 (UTC)

Not a joke, I myself have personally done this with an unmodded 1.9Pre .jar file. Right click with the shears on a Mooshroom, and it will convert to a Cow, dropping a small number of mushrooms. Verhalthur (talk)(contribs) 19:21, 25 September 2011 (UTC)

Innaccurate trivia item[]

Alongside buckets and the minecart, they're the only tools made from only 1 material (iron ingots).

That's not true. Boats, sticks and bowls are made from one material. Also, the wording is clumsy, and even if it were accurate, it wouldn't be very noteworthy. This should probably just be deleted, but I don't want to be too hasty on a wiki where I am a n00b. :) Sidewaysmilk 21:31, 19 November 2011 (UTC)

Added trivia[]

I realized that by having a large paddock and about 12-15 sheep I can continually harvest wool without stopping cause one eats by the time I finish the others. Never ending wool collecting(until the shears break). Am I allowed to just add this to the wiki or is there some kind of protocol?Sheep shearer-3:58-2012

New enchantments[]

Efficiency and Silk Touch are noted in the version history as the two enchantments that can be added to a pair of shears, but the article states that it is Silk Touch and Unbreaking that are now possible. Witch of these three are the new enchantments that can be added?

Crafting recipe in the wrong spot[]

The crafting recipe is under Usage: Speed and durability when it should be under crafting, I would do this but I do not know how to do the whole crafting image and everything. Goldenghost1000 (talk) 12:49, 9 May 2019 (UTC)

Yeah, something weird is going on here. The source code for the crafting is located in the proper section and not at all where the crafting image currently appears, not sure why. Will try a few purges and null edits to see if that fixes the problem.--Madminecrafter12 (Talk to me | View what I've done) 18:47, 9 May 2019 (UTC)
Oh, it was just missing the footer (|foot=1). Should be fixed now, Goldenghost1000. Thanks for letting us know!--Madminecrafter12 (Talk to me | View what I've done) 18:51, 9 May 2019 (UTC)

Snow golem sound event[]

User-12316399 I thought you should know there doesn't appear to be a specific sound for when a snow golem is sheared. I've been checking the sound assets and can't seem to find one for it, and the SoundEvent referenced in the snow golems class doesn't seem to exist anywhere. I believe it's reusing some other sound but can't seem to find where it's making the link between the snow golem sound and the one it's making use of. jjlr (talk) 10:48, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

Split "shearing" into "shearing" and "breaking blocks"[]

The "shearing" section covers two completely different actions, using shears to break blocks and to shear mobs. It should be split. 23:10, 13 April 2020 (UTC)

Not really a need, though. Amatulic (talk) 22:26, 29 May 2021 (UTC)

I am unable to add Fortune to Shears with an Anvil in Java MC 1.16 as the wiki page suggests is possible. Is this a Bedrock only feature? – Unsigned comment added by (talk) at 15:37, 29 May 2021 (UTC). Sign comments with ~~~~

Good catch. I just tested it in Bedrock, and was unable to add Fortune to shears. So I just removed that from the article, since you confirmed it isn't possible in Java either. Amatulic (talk) 22:26, 29 May 2021 (UTC)
