Please stop putting "bug fixes" in the "additions summary"

A bug fix is not an addition, it's not even a change to the gameplay. The "additions summary" table is not supposed to justify the time they spent developing minecraft every week or anything, it's a change list and for god's sake make it be so by removing the annoying "a few bug fixes" mentions. 79.97.62.216 20:57, 4 July 2012 (UTC)

  • Bug fixes are supposed to be there, where else are we going to find them? I think we would all rather know what bugs are fixed with each update. BaroqueWolf 16:40, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

Can clear entire hotbar with one click in Creative (new in 12w23a/b)

This doesn't seem to be in the list of 12w23b changes yet. When you shiftclick on the Red Cross in the creative entire, it clears your inventory and hotbar. --18:45, 11 June 2012 (UTC)18:45, 11 June 2012 (UTC)~

Well it hasn't been updated in awhile so it might update soon. MaryTheTiger 23:12, 13 June 2012 (UTC)

Buckets

Buckets don't seem to work well with lava, right clicking lava with an empty bucket removes the source but the bucket stays empty. 86.81.124.236 14:40, 10 June 2012 (UTC)

In Creative mode, this is intentional; it makes it easier to remove many lava/water source blocks, and you have an infinite supply of lava and water buckets anyway. -- Orthotope 19:47, 10 June 2012 (UTC)

Experience has never been "exponential"

I don't know if this is an error on Mojang's part or some wiki editor, but experience has never been "exponential" either "slightly" or otherwise. In the pre-12w22a system the differential xp was linear and the cumulative xp was consequently quadratic. I have no hard stats to go by for 12w22a, but it sounds like the differential xp was constant (17 xp) and the cumulative xp was consequently linear. In the post-12w23a system the differential xp is constant for the first 16 levels, then it becomes roughly linear (it actually fluctuates a bit). This makes the cumulative xp roughly quadratic (the slight fluctuations prevent it from being perfectly fit by a polynomial).

None of these systems are exponential. They are nowhere NEAR exponential. An exponential case would be where you have to multiply the past level's xp by some fixed number to find the next levels xp (either differential or cumulative, the derivative of an exponential is an exponential). An example would be where that number is 2 and the amount of xp required to level up doubles every time. This number could be less than 2, or even less than 1, but the bottom line is that the required xp grows *very* fast in the limit of large levels.

Constant is "order 0", linear is "order 1", quadratic is "order 2", and so on. Exponential technically has infinite order. Granted there are slow growing functions, oscillating functions, and so on that have infinite order, but exponentials are generally considered one of the fastest growing functions (from the perspective of limiting behavior). So, I think its worth noting that the minecraft case is quadratic, not exponential, since quadratic is very slow-growing in comparison when it comes to limiting behavior.

Dove 23:01, 14 June 2012 (UTC)

You do realize that a quadratic function is an exponential function, right? Bluemilkman 23:51, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
Nope. x2 is quadratic (or, more generally, polynomial), 2x is exponential; they are very different terms. -- Orthotope 07:27, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

The /tp command in snapshot 12w24a new features

The New snapshot features it says that there is a new /tp command that allows teleporting between players.[1] As far as I know, that command has always existed, and it shouldn't be displayed as a new feature. Am I just being crazy? Because I am sure it is NOT new, I use it on my vanilla server... Angelin01 23:28, 14 June 2012 (UTC)

Well, the text being fixed so that the information was correct was the concern. I'm sure this has been solved. Angelin01 19:05, 15 June 2012 (UTC)

Lag in 12w25a

Anyone notice a bit of lag in the newest snapshot (12w25a)? Spiders were glitching and hitting me and iron doors would only open for a split second. I downgraded back to the previous one and it was gone. Bluemilkman 19:40, 21 June 2012 (UTC)

It seems like it has to do with the new method of garbage collection meant to lower overall memory usage. It was messing with almost everything that has a timed nature. Redstone circuits, doors, leaf block decay, mob attacks/movement. Current solution seems to be to move back down to 12w24a --Sinthrill 23:18, 21 June 2012 (UTC)

Arrows fired out a bow in creative...

In previous versions when you were in creative mode with no arrows and fired a bow, the arrows would fire, but you couldn't collect them after. Now with 12w25a you can "collect" them, though they just get removed from the world and they don't go into your inventory. --76.4.89.161 22:34, 21 June 2012 (UTC)

Possible bug or intended “cleanup” feature? MaryTheTiger 22:38, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
Given that there was previously no way to remove the arrows, I'd vote for "cleanup". Not even going into survival would pick them up. You'd need to wait for them to despawn, which can cause issues depending on where/what they hit (seeing as they activate wooden pressure plates and tripwires). --76.4.89.161 23:42, 21 June 2012 (UTC)

12w25a cannot confirm bugs

I cannot confirm these bugs:

  • You can only select Adventure Mode game in LAN mode.
  • Mobs and entities are frozen causing the game mostly unplayable.

LB 23:57, 21 June 2012 (UTC)

Its not that the mobs freeze, it's that they lag for a brief moment, making combat a difficult endeavor even for people with full diamond, etc. With the debug screen up you will notice that mobs and, for the most part, anything you do will lag for a second when the current memory usage drops. Sinthrill 23:20, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

Recent Snapshot Prevents "The End" Expansion

I think this was changed in 12w25a, not quite sure if this is a bug or an intentional limit.

Explanation: In the end, no "new" chunks can be created, preventing builds from expanding beyond the original width and height of The End.

Some forum posts show users complaining about how much harder it will be to create an efficient Endermen farm if they can't build outwards from the original "island". Instead, players would need to flood the island first.

Mainly what I'd like to figure out is first, is this a bug or a bug-fix/intentional change? After that, It should be added to the changelog if appropriate. 98.202.68.30 22:34, 24 June 2012 (UTC) Cavemaneca

Skeletons can shoot through stairs

I have windows in my skeleton spawner room made from four stair blocks all placed at 90° to each other to make a window that is one block square made up of the four stair block gaps. I just tried out the new snapshot (the first time I have tried a snapshot) and the skeletons in the spawner room can now shoot me as I walk past the windows! I haven't tried my map on the old server so I don't know if this is because of the server heritage of the new code. Skeletons are also pushing each other through walls which I have seen in server mode so it may be so. PhilHibbs 21:14, 25 June 2012 (UTC)

This isn't a bug, stair blocks now have a hitbox the correct shape, and the gap is no longer being blocked by vision or projectiles. 98.202.68.30 15:57, 4 July 2012 (UTC)Cavemaneca

  • Close Minecraft completely
  • Download minecraft.jar and replace the one in %AppData%/.minecraft/bin/ with it
  • Run Minecraft
I hope this helps. LB 06:05, 8 July 2012 (UTC)

Endermen don't spawn

I created an Endermen farm in 1.2.5 that is 150 blocks away from the giant island in the end which is optimal distance away for them to spawn in 1.2.5 perfectly. Although in the latest snapshot (12w27a) they don't spawn at all. There are no torches and they just don't work.

You have to be 32 blocks away from where you want mobs to spawn. (You also have to figure diagonal block distance as well, since air counts as a block.) Iyeru 00:02, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

EDIT: I am 150 blocks away from the closest spawning area as well the spawning area for the endermen is 42 blocks up as they will drop down for an XP drop farm. I do not know how to 'reply' so, if anyone can tell me. That'd be awesome! Xearta 00:46, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

The latest weekly might not have them spawning elsewhere due to a new structure outside of the end area. (And no generating chunks.) Iyeru 19:48, 14 July 2012 (UTC)

Blocks are randomly changing into other blocks, sometimes blocks that don't even exist. Minor Annoyance...

I'm not sure if this has even been touched on in the Known Bugs for v1.3 pre-release, but I'm going to talk about this here just to see.

There is a minor, but annoying, bug/issue that occurs when placing certain blocks (especially all stair types). I will add a couple of image links so that they are available to someone that is far more capable in using the current bug tracking system that is in place.

I apologize in advanced. I'm far from noob, it's just that I absolutely refuse to read through hordes of off-putting text. I tried and failed... miserably.

With that said, here are the images of the graphical bug.

http://img690.imageshack.us/img690/607/20120729195355.png

http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/6418/20120729153502.png

As you can see, the blocks become distorted graphically. Sometimes they change direction or block type. However, this is limited to placing stairs beside their parent block (placing a cobblestone stair will sometimes graphically distort surrounding cobblestone stairs by making them look like cobblestone blocks). This IS only graphical because either destroying or placing a block nearby will make it appear normal again.

Anyway, if this has already been mentioned, I'm sorry for getting in the way. If not, then maybe someone would be kind enough to make it known on the Known Bugs page.

12w32a adds game rules

Inside the level.dat file a new compound tag "GameRules" was added. Inside that tag are 6 strings (included default values). These can be changed in-game with the new /gamerule command: /gamerule <rule> <value>

The new Command Block can use this command to alter the rules.

Warning: rule names are CASE-SENSITIVE. "keepInventory" will work, but "KeepInventory" will not.

Rule Default value What it does
doFireTick True If false, prevents fire from extinguishing, although anything flammable near lava can still catch fire.
doMobLoot True If false, mobs do not drop loot when killed, although they will still grant experience.
doMobSpawning True Unknown. Doesn't affect spawn eggs, does not ignore difficulty setting; Skeletons spawned via egg on Peaceful despawn as normal.
doTileDrops True If false, blocks do not drop when broken, as if they were destroyed in Creative mode.
keepInventory False If true, players keep their inventory when they die.
mobGriefing True If false, Creepers et al. cannot destroy the environment.

Something happened on one of my worlds. I was testing out the new block so I built a large pyramid. I activated the block, powered it with an emerald, and then it kicked me out of my world! Whenever I try to access it it just gives me the error message "Internal Server Error." Does anyone know how to fix this? 75.185.172.255 03:08, 12 August 2012 (UTC)

According to the beacon's bug section, this is a critical bug caused by not choosing a secondary buff. I believe it also said that you can't get the world back. Sorry. Funky3000 05:42, 12 August 2012 (UTC)

Keep back ups of your worlds!

As listed above, new blocks or items like the Beacon Block, can be a "DANGER" to your worlds. I Highly Sagest that you keep back ups of your worlds. You never know when the next up date might ruin every thing. and some up dates like this one, I don't like because it can be a "DANGER" If not "GRAVE DANGER" to your world unfortunately. However, its possible to save your world by forcing a update to your minecraft.jar and hopefully, save you world. I have had a few incidents like listed above. however thankfully I had back ups. oh 75.185.172.255, Who ever you are, Very very Sorry about what happened to your world. I am sorry for your loss. New map grid too small! (12w34a)

In snapshot 12w34a the maps are given a grid, predefining size/edges so that people can make maps which share edges easier... However, the grid zooms in WAY too close for maps to be useful anymore; I think it's 1-to-1 scale, as opposed to 1-to-8. Zombies and skeletons with helmets don't burn in daylight.

I think this should be added, but since I'm new here I'd rather let someone more experienced confirm and add it. Note: Also, their helmets apparently can fall off, at which point they take damage like normal. Also, maps can be put in the new item frames, and other maps will then show a green arrow where it is. Mob grinders now give less XP when you farm them continuously

Could I get a developer (or someone who's in the know) to explain the above change some more for me?

- How much XP are we able gain from an XP farm before the XP dries up?

- How long must we wait before the XP returns (if it does return)?

- Does the XP return all at once or slowly over time?

- Does the game track XP from the spawners individually, by mob type, or globally?

revamped f3 item

now in the f3 debug screen item "f: [0<n<3]" has changed to "f: [0<n<3] / [-180<n<180]" as of 12w34a [proven] it now shows the exact direction the player is looking in, in degrees, relative to [north?]Jack1197 02:05, 27 August 2012 (UTC)

Mobs killed with items equipped fail to drop loot.

Now that, "Zombies, Skeletons and Zombie Pigmen sometimes spawn wearing equipment including enchanted weapons and any type of armor, depending on the difficulty level." I've a question on how their drops work.

- I play on hardcore mode and of the hundreds of these special mobs with equipped equipment I've dispatched, only a few times have I received an item, most of the time nothing special drops. Is this normal?

- If I see a Zombie in a full set of armor (any type), does it have all four pieces or just one of them? I cant tell, because nothing drops when I kill them (have I said that before?)

- If I see a Skeleton with a glowing bow why doesn't it drop when I kill him? (triple redundant for redundancy's sake)

Buzzaro 02:52, 27 August 2012 (UTC)

My chests are temperamental and fail to swap items. (12w34b)

When I open a chest and swap some items in and out; I see those changes and close it and move on. When I open my inventory or use an item, all those items I've taken out and those put in are back to where they were before. (kind of like a time warp)

it happens most when I have a desperate need to swap items out, and the more desperate I am to swap those items the more times I have to try again before it takes. Hmmm, It sounds like they have a "critical need detector" installed.

Anyone else having this issue? Buzzaro 00:07, 31 August 2012 (UTC)

Sounds like a lag issue. Worldofminecraft 22:14, 31 August 2012 (UTC)

I went back to the 1.3.2 version to test if I could recreate this issue, but I can not; it only happens in 12w34b and only started happening with the 12w34ish updates. Buzzaro 07:36, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

This happened with the old 1.3.1 Bukkit version. Didn't happen with the less laggy ones, so probably a lag glitch. --Spy227X 22:01, 12 October 2012 (UTC)

Carrots and potatoes in Jungles

There is absolutely no evidence that potatoes and carrots grow in jungles. Jeb said that they will grow in villages or in jungles, and they now grow in villages. No one has shown any pictures of jungle potatoes/carrots. That note should be deleted because there is no proof about them as of yet. 212.226.42.174 19:41, 7 September 2012 (UTC)

Zombie texture change?

The last bullet says "The Zombie and Zombie Pigman models and textures have changed (breaking old texture packs)", but after taking a look at them, there doesn't seem to be any difference. Am I missing something?

What has happened, is that the model has expanded to use a much larger image, (probably because there will be more skin segments later.) This means that pigzombie and zombie.png had to change to accommodate this (add a bunch of transparent space.) You will not notice an actual difference in game unless you use a texture pack designed for an older version (because they will not have added this extra space,) in which case the texture will be horribly misaligned. 3 "mystery" Textures added in 12w37a

I noticed that there are 3 new textures on the left of items.png, Anyone know what they are or are intended for? (One is a brown oval on top of a black square, one a couple of brown circles side by side, and the other... brown shoes maybe?) Cultist O 16:52, 13 September 2012 (UTC)

I noticed those too. I'm pretty sure they are some sort of helmet top, knee pads, and shoe linings for leather armor "layers". These textures stay the same while the rest of the armor is dyed a different color. --Kanegasi C 17:02, 13 September 2012 (UTC)

Strange Texture Files?

I noticed these in the item files: File:Strange Items.PNG

The top bit that got cut off is part of the wooden hoe, and the bottom two look like shoes and gloves. Does anybody know what they're supposed to be? (ignore the very top one) yoshidude56 02:19, 14 September 2012 (UTC)

Those are the normal leather layer on leather armor. The texture was added to prevent confusion with dyed leather armor. For example, dyed white leather looks like iron armor. The top one I think is on the helmet, the middle is kneepads on the pants and I think the last one is on the bottom of the shoes.Stpehen 03:04, 14 September 2012 (UTC)

Ocelots can spawn with two cubs

When in creative mode, using an ocelot spawn egg has a chance to spawn one ocelot with two cubs. Not shure if this can also naturally occur in jungle biomes. Might be worth adding to the changelog though.

Cookies

I have just noticed that Cookies have been renamed biscuits. How long as this been for? I use UK English as my language.

Also, there is; Wooden Shovel and Iron Shovel, but it is;

Gold, diamond and stone spade. Is there a reason for them to be different?

89.243.46.108 21:00, 5 October 2012 (UTC)

You stated it in your first parpagraph. Its because of the UK english. It is slightly different than the US english.98.159.27.28 14:22, 7 October 2012 (UTC)
Yes, I'm sure they were asking why these words didn't match the US ones.
-_- To reiterate the question, WHEN did cookie change to biscuit, and why does iron and wood use "shovel" while gold diamond and stone use "spade". As for the second part, I'm certain they shouldn't be different, but it isn't important enough to anyone to have changed (if you're not the first one to have noticed) Cultist O 18:57, 7 October 2012 (UTC)
Well, the "cookie" changing to "biscuit" is reasonable, since that's what they're called in BE. But the renaming of "shovel" to "spade" is pretty unnecessary. It seems like the language editors just want there to be a difference to maintain a separate identity or something. - M0rphzone(talk) 22:20, 7 October 2012 (UTC)

12w41a Slimes Spawning on surface

At night I have some slimes spawning on the surface. Difficulty is normal, standard world gen, no mods. Is anyone else encountering this? [Screenshot] 68.191.100.232 16:10, 11 October 2012 (UTC)

Additional detail: it only seems to be in swamps. No other biomes I've reached on this save seem to be spawning them. Perhaps it has something to do with witch spawning? The slime-spawning swamp has two witch huts in it (although neither of these huts have spawned a witch yet). 68.191.100.232 16:21, 11 October 2012 (UTC)
That's been in the game since 12w40a, and my understanding is that it is intentional, (only in swamps, and only at night low light levels) though it is frustrating that they cannot swim, so drown a lot when they spawn in swamps. Cultist O 16:33, 11 October 2012 (UTC)
That also means that just swimming the shallow water you may find some random slimeballs (yay free slime, it seems rare on my worlds). Trigger hurt 13:51, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

Incorrect label

It has come to my attention that one of the things in the 12w41b bugs list says: The Anvil's naming field does not work. Actually, it does not work entirely , I have tested the latest snapshot on Windows XP, the naming field only barely doesn't work. By that i mean it requires 2 items to work properly. Otherwise it will rename items, if you combine them. Trigger hurt 13:49, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

Snapshot 12w42a

One of the "bugs" is that the scrren flashes to the starting screen, then the loading screen. This has been happening to me since 1.3.1, so should it be lower or in the current bug list?

Falling sand "pops" on torches - feature or bug?

The update log says that falling sand now "properly pops on torches". Isn't this an old bug? I mean, a ton of sand falling on a torch, surely we would expect the torch to pop, not the sand? 85.81.40.95 10:00, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

One of the additions in the 1.4 prerelease is "Servers show their version in Multiplayer menu if not matching the client". Iron Door + Zombie

Sorry if this sound is already used, but in the "sound3(12w42b sounds)/zombie, there are "metal" sounds which sound like zombie pounding iron doors. Will they try fruitlessly to break iron doors on Hard/be able to break them on Hardcore, maybe? Sparkpin2 00:09, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

I think this is the sound for a villager being infected, as I have heard the sound and thought it was a new door pounding sound.

89.243.46.108 06:26, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

The sound has been there since door breaking was added. I do believe that it is an iron door pounding sound. 98.159.27.28 14:00, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

That will surely suck if they will be able to break iron doors on hardcore, then i will have to find some slimeballs to make a sticky piston door on my hardcore house, and we all know how hard those are to find. -.- God i hope that isn't added. Trigger hurt 14:11, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

I took the liberty to remove the numbers in the table of contents. These numbers in addition with the updates numbers made the whole thing look much too heavy and confusing.
