To do

Okay. When I proposed this page, I had something very great in mind but this article feels very lacking. I do not have the time and dedication to do it right now but I thought I should leave some hints on how this page should be. An example is in the RS Wiki: http://runescape.wikia.com/wiki/Upcoming_updates

The reason I wanted this page was so that the semi-confirmed upcoming updates, which might have very little information on how it will turn out and without a good timeframe. Some of these pages are Adventure, Zombie Siege, Capture the Flag, Realistic Mode, Pigman, Trap Block, Scarecrow and Lantern. This will avoid useless stubs which might be left in this Wiki forever if they are not implemented at all.

Also, there should be a more specific mob section, where we can then take them out from the mobs page, instead of just a general "More mobs" statement. Updates which have been implemented should be removed, instead of letting them linger around here.

This is just a suggestion, and hopefully someone with enough dedication will make this article turn into something great. --Scykei 09:46, 26 February 2011 (UTC)

Pistons

I was watching a YouTube on the Mincecraft modification 'Pistons', which allows the player to shoot each other, or, sand and gravel into the air. With floating blocks, it will push the block up one and leave it there. Now the creator of this mod was asked by Jeb_ if he would like to post it for future ideas. So the creator did this, and since Jeb_ asked him to submit it, it may well be a candidate for a future update. --Rocĸetor talk 20:26, 6 April 2011 (UTC)

Occlusion Culling?

What is occlusion culling and what effect would it have in game?

Occlusion culling is basically one method for not rendering stuff that isn't seen (because it's behind other stuff that *is* seen). It should speed up the game by a decent amount (in theory, at least). ダイノガイ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 04:21, 15 April 2011 (UTC)

Whatever Does This Mean???

"Notch has stated several times on Twitter that he intends to add some way to display items such as armor and weapons"??? What? Can't we already see armour and weapons in your inventory and on other players? Is this a residue from older versions? Vincent2128 04:56, 27 April 2011 (UTC)

No, I added it fairly recently. It refers to a display case or rack block that can be placed like other blocks, and would "hold" otherwise-unplaceable items such as armor or weapons/tools. It's a popular request, and I've seen several tweets in Notch's feed stating that he intends to add such a block at some point. ダイノガイ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 04:59, 27 April 2011 (UTC)

I thought about adding it, but to be honest he didn't particularly promise the feature. Someone said "It would be cool if..." and he responded "Yup!" So really it could go either way. Maybe he wants to add it, or maybe he's just agreeing that it would be cool (even though it's too hard to add, or it would take too much time, or _insert some other reason they aren't going to do it here_). It may be worth referencing the Tweet under the "more mobs" listing or something though. --Warlock 23:49, 5 June 2011 (UTC)
I went ahead and added it as a reference there (especially since it had a [citation needed] for some reason). --Warlock 23:55, 5 June 2011 (UTC)

Undocumented blocks

What is the policy for blocks or other Minecraft related stuff that is not yet in the game, nor is known if it ever will be? Watching the 20-ish minute Documentary of Mojang (the link is somewhere in the references for this page), I saw a few items that are not in the game, nor have been talked about in twitter as far as I know. The "Obsidian Chest" is an example, and can be seem in the full video. Fence blocks made opaque?

As we can see from the video, torches can be now placed on fences. AFAIR, torches cannot be placed on transparent blocks. And then there's one thing I thought about, that vid has a lot of stacked fences, and fences aren't placeable on eachother as well. So maybe Notch just made fences opaque blocks? OR made it somehow that it's not the transparency that decides what can be placed on what... Of course, pure speculation. --HTMLCoder.exe 23:35, 16 June 2011 (UTC)

Fences can already be stacked, but torches cannot be placed on them. FatherToast 18:32, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, they can be stacked, but the process needed currently to do it is time-consuming and annoying IMO. If you just could stack them the way you could stack, say, cobblestone, that would be great. --TheKax 16:12, 18 June 2011 (UTC)

TheKax: bukkit plugin exists for that. I think Notch made an exception, otherwise fences would have a strange look.

Curved World??

The reference is to Notch's twitter post here: [2], and presumably he's talking about this image: [3]. I see nothing to indicate a curved world; instead, I see the camera POV getting distorted due to the wide angle of the MC window. You can replicate this effect by running MC windowed, and shrinking it vertically. Instead, this screenshot tells me that Miner Steve's true identity is actually none other than Luke Skywalker. "World curvature" - what? No, that's just the 3D

Obviously in the picture the 3D makes the world 'look' curved. Just open Minecraft, go into any world, and look on the edge of the screen - it's all stretched. Obviously the real thing is flight, unless everyone is blind? LB 21:46, 26 June 2011 (UTC)

Physical Copy?

The "Full Version" 1.0 description says that a physical copy of the game will be sold. I've never heard of this before, and it seems mighty unlikely that it will be released on a physical disk. Has anyone got an actual source for this, or should it be removed? IVI4tt 21:16, 29 June 2011 (UTC)

Features not in 1.8

On notch's blog he says "To come is more interesting farming, bigger incentives to explore, and npc villages." He says "To come" after he talks about whats in 1.8, suggesting these features won't be in 1.8 and instead will be later.

"Already implemented are new complex terrain features, at least one new mob, some interesting new combat mechanics, a new lighting engine, and some experimental new gameplay ideas. To come is more interesting farming, bigger incentives to explore, and npc villages."
He's listing what he has already done first, and what he plans to do second. Seems pretty self-explanatory to me. Shellface 18:50, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

Stained Glass

Unfortunately I have no way of backing up this claim at the moment with sufficient evidence, but I have reason to believe that the introduction of glass panes are part of an effort to bring in colored or stained glass into Minecraft. This feature has been hinted at through some of Notch's posts and comments regarding a new lighting engine and specific color hues now being emitted by objects in the game (ie torches giving off orange light). Placing a light source behind these colored panes may give off a similar colored light that can be manipulated by melting sand with the appropriate dye somewhere in the glass-making process (creating glass through a new process is not too hard to digest, and it seems there has to be a new way to make glass to even manufacture glass panes). Again, I have no way of proving that this will be added, but if someone were to prod about and question Notch regarding the technical aspects of the new lighting engine, I'd be more than willing to bet he'd provide some solid evidence on this matter. --Sandman 04:40, 21 July 2011 (UTC)

Ah, I wasn't aware Jeb had made that comment, thank you for finding that. That rules out the colored light theory, but it is still possible that there may be standard colored glass in the future (which I personally doubt now, as my suspicions for the presence of colored glass were based entirely off of talk of the new lighting engine). --Sandman 05:31, 21 July 2011 (UTC)

Well I added the info to this link [7] and to be honest I just waited for it to be reverted. I don't know why, but I felt it. Maybe the source isn't really trusted or it is because it's german. Now, to the point. In the new 1.8 beta release, creative mode was added to the game. The mode currently in use must be stored somewhere. Now, as usual, the level.dat is used, just like for health and spawn point. And now, the funny thing: level.dat is saved in NBT format. NBT is not like the average text file: every value must have a preset size limit. That, no more, no less, memory is allocated to the value. The amount is calculated in bits, and the maximum size thus being 2bits allocated. Now, a "boolean" is 21, which equals two, and thus, a single bit can hold values 0 and 1 (since we start counting from 0). This is well enough for values like whether it's thundering (0 for no thunder and 1 for thunder). You would expect the game mode is stored in a "boolean", in a single bit, since it only uses two possible values? Wrong. A whole 32 bits are used (that is, an "integer"). That means it can potentially store up to 232 (=2147483647) different values. This would hint that there might be more than two game modes, eventually. No, not 2147483645 new game modes! Just that, because it's not possible to allocate any arbitrary number of bits, only certain amounts are allowed (like 1 and 32). But still, it's enough (actually "too much") for more than two modes. This is no proof, just a hint. I just wanted to hear what you think of it. TK | TheKax | Talk 16:04, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

That's an interesting find. I do know that when I program though I get so used to typing "int" over and over that I fail to use the boolean variable type even when I really should. Now, like you said, this isn't proof, but it is a really cool observation. Cleverlynamed1 02:03, 20 September 2011 (UTC)

New Mob

So in this video "Minecraft Monday" the guy says there will be a new annoying mob, should that be listed on the upcoming features page?

Sept. 22 is NOT 1.9 People!

You can cite all the twitters you want, NOTHING says 1.9 is coming out on the 22nd. It is 1.8.2, *if* they even release anything. Stop jumping the gun and creating mis-information.

Nosrepa 19:57, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

How is this not 1.9?
"Phew, on my way home again. Finished most of the nether stuff, which includes two new hostile mobs (one is the retexturing attempt)" [9]
"Heh no, no screenshots since you'll be able to see them yourself tomorrow (knock on wood)" [10]
It may not include NPCs or whatever, but it's 1.9. It's not a "service update" if he's including new mobs and Nether features. --Warlock 20:02, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
I can see how it could be 1.9.. I also don't see how it would hurt to add in "Possible release on 9/22/11"..Not like its never been like that before on the Upcoming page? So whats it hurt? And sorry for the re-edit..but 1.8.2 was only going to be to fix the xp balls dropping and causing lag in SMP..which would have been done by now if 1.9 was not coming earlier.. --Anthrophobic 20:08, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
We're all making assumptions here, but it's better to err on the side of caution. No where does anyone say what version this will be and it's not even guaranteed that anything will be officially released tomorrow. It is not wise to excite the already excitable community with claims that cannot be backed up on anything more than speculation.

1.9 pre-release. Anyone that stupid?From Moi, Ajc_1254 20:17, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
There hasn't been enough mouth drooling screenshots to suggest 1.9 release so soon. The way it came off sounded like it'd be so minor they don't even want it to have a version number. Lets just keep the page as it was before and wait until tomorrow or whenever they decide to release it, because no one knows anything for sure. MegaScience 20:24, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
What I know for sure is that Devs have a tendency to have more stuff going on than you think.
Besides, Notch said: "If we don't feel comfortable doing a proper release, we'll do another "leak"."
Really? A Pre-Release for a patch that fixed what, one bug? Seriously? You've got to be joking. All evidence supports that idea that 1.8.2 got merged into 1.9. --{ Fishrock123 } (Talk) 00:25, 22 September 2011 (UTC)
Hm, well, no. People have put release dates that in turn were not correct (Beta 1.8, anyone?). I say we keep it as is and if it's not, we set it back to unknown until it is resolved. Cool12309(T|C) 01:13, 22 September 2011 (UTC)

I was wrong and I admit defeat, though I still say we err on the side of caution for the future.

Netherrack Torch

So in the latest 1.9 talk from the forums they mention "Netherrack Torch" is that a hint or sign that they are coming? Or did I miss something? --Anthrophobic 15:13, 23 September 2011 (UTC)

1.9 Game Mechanics changes

Jeb has mentioned Nerfing fire damage which includes lava not being an instant kill. This is obviously so the new hardcore mode has some playability and isn't too difficult. I couldn't find it on upcoming features.

There is the distinct possibility that the boss mobs that everyone is talking about is the dragon that hasn't been implemented. jeb said that both he and notch agreed that if there were dragons they wouldn't act as mounts so the other option is a boss. Theesexiestman 07:35, 10 October 2011 (UTC)

Fences

Just a minor thing on fences: they can now be placed above air, whereas previously they could only be placed on top of other blocks JohnnyAlpha 17:20, 29 September 2011 (UTC)

What exactly do you mean? Image available? --Throex 18:05, 29 September 2011 (UTC)
http://i.imgur.com/no4SC.png There you go. I can stick fences to the wall now, with an empty space below it. Before I would only have been able to do this by placing it on top of another block and then removing that block. --JohnnyAlpha 19:11, 29 September 2011 (UTC)
Ah, I see and understand now. I do not like the new fence attaching to block feature.. It really can mess you up on certain things. Like a fence around your house, then you have a bunch of half fences connecting to other blocks around it. So you can't have blocks or trees next to your fences anymore.. kinda sucks.

Version numbers

Is there enywhere information from Notch where he says "1.10"? I can't find such thing, and due to releasing two updates before 18 October being extremely unlikely, i suggest to change "1.10" to "After Beta 1.9" or "Probably 1.0 or 1.1". Raymaniak 18:19, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

Should change it to "Beta 2.0"

[15] <- There you go. --Warlock 17:49, 3 October 2011 (UTC)
I think his plans must have changed, because it seems unlikely they would release 1.9 next week and then 1.10 before the feature freeze on October 18th. Of course, 1.10 could come out during the feature freeze but notch has said nothing to indicate that. Plus theyve been working on a lot of "1.10 features" despite 1.9 not being out yet. For example, baby animals will probably be in 1.9 now. I think we could move all the 1.10 stuff into the 1.9+ section until 1.9 comes out. --64.28.253.133 02:10, 6 October 2011 (UTC)
Then surely it would be best to leave it in 1.10 and move things that are in 1.9 pre 3 to the 1.9 section. --Mini Munch 03:34, 06 October 2011
Except we don't even know if 1.10 will exist so 1.9+ makes more sense. --129.107.180.34 14:59, 6 October 2011 (UTC)
I would have to agree that 1.10 is something you should not hold your breath for. The enchantment table is in the 1.9PR3 as well as Baby Animals. Also, the new air portal is in the PR3. I believe they are pushing for one big final release before the feature freeze. Also, while the feature freeze is on hold, I think we should get the Wiki set up for the upcoming final release of the game. Maybe set up a project with a list of things that need to be done, then assign certain people to those projects. We have plenty of time to work on it before the final release. If interested visit my talk page and let me know. --Throex 03:18, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

Transfer 1.10 content to the 1.9!

Almost everything written in the 1.10 part of the list has now been implanted in the 1.9 update! someone should transfer those contents because its annoying to follow! and there probably wont even be a 1.10 update! because Notch seem to be putting everything in one update now... but still those should be transferred: -Potions -Enchantement -the Ender -Air portal --Pluche93 15:24, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

  • I agree with all of these listed. Considering that its getting closer to the final deadline for the additions and enter the month of bugs and performance fixes it is becoming increasingly more likely that 1.10 will end up either not going ahead or adding very minor additions to tie everything together.

-- Mini Munch 22:02 7 October 2011

But there will be 1.10, Not sure if 1.10 means the final update, Because Jeb said The boss will be in 1.10. --186.92.198.109 02:39, 8 October 2011 (UTC)

  • He said that we will have to wait for them but as notch seems to be delaying the 1.9 then they may be added near the end of the 1.9. Considering it hasn't been long since 1.8 i see no reason for notch to rush out 1.9 just to add 1.10 a week later. -- Mini Munch 14:00 8 October 2011

  • That sentence is rather ironic don't you think, as you don't "Get/got" intelligence. It made me chuckle :P
And BTW, the boss mob is already stated in the 1.9 section. its repetitive to state it twice. -THE ENDERDRAGON IS THE BOSS. -duhhhhh, its deep inside the stronghold, & jeb said in his dreamhack pres that if a dragon is added that it would not act like a mount and thus would prolly be a boss. Theesexiestman 07:42, 10 October 2011 (UTC)
The Dragon is a boss but Jeb said he was working on bosses and something that would require us to be prepared to battle. And considering that The Ender is Notch's baby it might mean Jeb has something boss 'like' in the works as well, no reason not to have multiple boss 'like' mobs. -- Mini Munch 15:56 10 October 2011

Will there be world gen changes 1.8 world?

If I created a world in 1.8, will the update affect it and change it? Plohek 10:53, 9 October 2011 (UTC)

Your world will be the same, but exploring further and thus creating new chunks will probably produce non-matching terrain since the biome code changed again in 1.9. So yes, the updates will take effect and snow, mushroom and other biomes will start to generate. Zahami 14:10, 9 October 2011 (UTC)

Changes in mobs health?

I noticed that in 1.9 PR3 it is way harder to kill mobs. I've always played on hard, and I was able to kill (for example) zombies with two critical hits using a diamond sword, while now i need 3-4 hits, and I still play on hard.

My questions are: were weapons nerfed? Or mobs have more healt now? Because, really, to kill a pig I need two normal strikes with a diamond sword now. I also remember that I could kill ANY mob on hard difficulty with a maximum of two fully charged arrows, while now I need more.

PS: is there any difference between hard and hardcore as far as mobs healt and attack strength? Zahami 14:10, 9 October 2011 (UTC)

The 1.10

The 1.10 will be? I mean, if its the 3 part of the adventure update, its suppose to be this Month before 18 of october, Or maybe it is After the Full release. Can someone explain me?--186.92.198.109 14:43, 9 October 2011 (UTC)

No one knows. I think there is not enough time to release it before 18 october, so probably after the full release, unless they start to work like crazy or delay the full release. Zahami 15:10, 9 October 2011 (UTC)
I have mentioned my ideas on 1.10 in previous topics. Jeb and Notch do not seem to be mentioning 1.10 in their tweets about new content so 1.10 onwards may end up become bug fixing and performance tweaking. Although knowing Notch I bet some new features will appear in the list ;) -- Mini Munch 04:04, 10 October 2011

What makes you think it's a joke?
http://notch.tumblr.com/post/11309884313/pre-releases-and-adventure-updates
I think it's the best solution if we want the official game to be released within Minecon, because it's normal that when adding new features, new bugs appear, so it's best to do pre-releases so we can test the game for them, and they can fix the major bugs for the Minecon (also, remember that there is a reason if it is still in Beta).
In the other hand, if they decide to release the official 1.9 before Minecon, they should fix all the major bugs before releasing it (because it's not fair for players to encounter big bugs in an official release, just think at the duplication bug occurred in 1.8 pre 1), and thus they would waste time searching for new bugs without community support, leaving less time for new features.
Just make them work, it's hard to develop a game that has got so big (also remember there are just two coders: notch and jeb). Zahami 17:48, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

Eventual Features, etc.

The things in the Eventual Features section have been mentioned or considered, but many of them aren't likely to be added, or have no concrete proof that they will be added for certain. I propose that we either change the name of the section, or separate it into two sections depending on likelihood of a particular thing being added. --Pizza2004 02:32, 21 November 2011 (UTC)

I would suggest anything that doesn't have a citation and anything that they have said they are considering, but didn't say for certain should be moved into a 'Possible Features, etc.' section, so that it is easier to see what we know is coming at some later point and what we may possibly get. --Pizza2004 02:37, 21 November 2011 (UTC)
