Groups of melons appear to be generated with the world, like with pumpkins. I think this is a new feature of the snapshot. Seed is 1 and co-ords are shown on screenshot. This is part of 1.7.2's Update that Changed the World (it did): I'm using it (for stability, despite all the cool snapshot /pre-release stuff). I found 2 batches of Melons, and I see that like you, I found them only in Jungle Biomes, where they initially-spawn, as of that UpDate.

- They need to detect a village, some youtube videos review/make stuff with snapshot features have shown this feature. Also note this is a snapshot, which comes with a few bugs.
