Groups of melons appear to be generated with the world, like with pumpkins. I think this is a new feature of the snapshot. Seed is 1 and co-ords are shown on screenshot. This is part of 1.7.2's Update that Changed the World (it did): I'm using it (for stability, despite all the cool snapshot /pre-release stuff). I found 2 batches of Melons, and I see that like you, I found them only in Jungle Biomes, where they initially-spawn, as of that UpDate.

When in F3, the cursor shows red/green - I think it is indicating direction, and maybe range...Groups of melons appear to be generated with the world, like with pumpkins. - They need to detect a village, some youtube videos review/make stuff with snapshot features have shown this feature. Also note this is a snapshot, which comes with a few bugs. - Villagers that existed before 14w04a or those that are summoned in without a "CanPickUpLoot" tag of 1 will not be able to pick up the items. Villagers before 14w04a have this tag set to 0, and is not updated when switching over. If the 'mobGriefing' gamerule is off, the villagers will not harvest at all.
