Rewrite

Although technically not covered by the Rewrite for Style project, I think this page would be better if it were more like the Blocks page with a list of all items (yes there are many items that are missing) and with images of the items and no description (apart from the general category descriptors). The page could be organised according to the Items template. Thoughts, comments? GoandgooTalk

thoughts on what should be considered a block or an item

with the added features to resource packs in 1.8 it could be debated that 'block items' are no longer a thing. any inventory icon can look different than the block itself - one could change the cake's icon to show the actual block and one could also change oak wood's icon into a custom made 16x16 graphic. i feel that considering the sugar cane, for example, as an item would be odd, as the only difference compared to something like tall grass is that it uses a different 16x16 image for the item icon instead of showing the actual block graphic. a sugar cane can still be placed in the world just like the tallgrass.

however, this can open up some issues. what about wheat seeds? are those considered blocks? they can be placed into the world like a block. how about carrots? potatoes? are those blocks too? what about stuff that spawns an entity, like paintings, armor stands, banners, etc? can those be considered blocks or items? what about string and redstone?

i would like to see some thoughts on this. i feel we need to establish what to document as an item or block. should we consider any block that has a unique 16x16 graphic as an icon to be an item? should we consider any item that places a block in the world a block? should we consider items that place any physical object, be it an entity made to look like a block or an actual block, as a block?

personally i feel any item that places a block in the world should be documented as a block. use your agree/disagree stuff for this part. --Piber20 (talk) 06:58, 15 May 2016 (UTC)

It's not based on appearance as much as on internal ID values. Sugar cane uses a different ID number when held in inventory than when placed in the world; this makes the inventory form an item. -- Orthotopetalk 07:51, 15 May 2016 (UTC)

Can I create File:Items.png?

Can I create that file similar to File:Template1.png, or there is no need? Dentedharp90041tc 14:00, 1 August 2017 (UTC)

History section needs attention

I do believe it's missing all items added since Alpha. SpockMan02 (talk) 08:30, 6 August 2017 (UTC)

Just like the history section on Block, we don't need to do that. -BDJP (t|c) 08:46, 6 August 2017 (UTC)

Nautilus shell and Heart of the sea

Both the "Nautilus Shell" and "Heart of the Sea" need to be added to the planned items section. jjlr (talk) 12:11, 11 April 2018 (UTC)

Item ID

Hello i have issue with minecraft id. im new creator of custom maps.. and i just wanted to know how can i get to id for some items in Vanila Minecraft... Many items have same id such as "Sapling".. For instance "Birch Sapling" , "Dark_oak Sapling" and "Oak Sapling" have same id but different id tag... but if i type that tag nothing happens cuz Minecraft dont use id anymore.. It uses name.. So i cant type /get @p 6:2 1 (for "Birch Sapling").. Instead of that i need to type /get @p minecraft:sapling (but it will only give me "Oak Sapling")... My question and problem is: How to get to id for other items such as different saplings? –Preceding unsigned comment was added by IZuMro (talkcontribs) at 19:47, 26 May 2018 (UTC). There is no /get command in vanilla. What you want is /give. The syntax for /give in 1.12 is "/give <target> <item> <count> <datatag>". So "/give @s minecraft:sapling 1 2". --Pepijn (talk) 20:46, 26 May 2018 (UTC)

Item classification

Instead of making a bunch of sections and listing a few items in each one, I think we should have a big list or table with every item in it. The classifications are subjective, and many items fit in multiple sections (like how axes can be tools and weapons). an_awsome_person (talk) 07:50, 24 September 2018 (UTC)

Agree I think whole item classification should be checked. At first we need "classification of classification" like "how it is made", "main purpose", "secondary purpose" etc. In "how it is made" category, maybe "raw materails", "manufactured", "commands only", "by platform only"... can be there. In "main purpose" and "secondary purpose", "tools", "informative", "armor"... can be there. If we can make a big list or table finally, somebody can make a template or module, which assign the type of the item automatically. BSkyWcloud (talk) 15:32, 9 April 2019 (UTC)BSkyWcloud

Deleting the utility section

Many of items in untility section, including "banner" and "bed" are actually "blocks". Some of them are tools, and some should be classified as decorations, etc. Clicking all the items shows no "type = utility", that means utility classification is useless, I think. BSkyWcloud (talk)BSkyWcloud

revert article

in my opinion the list of different types of items is more helpful and while yes it could be improved i believe it is more useful being categorized by what they are and not alphbetically –Preceding unsigned comment was added by FatKat420666 (talkcontribs) at 23:44, 9 May 2019‎ (UTC). The categories were removed because several people in this discussion wanted to remove them. If you have a good reason to add them back, then you should probably post your reason in that discussion before trying to add them back. an_awsome_person (talk) 01:05, 10 May 2019 (UTC)

Egg and snowball in "weapons" section of item template

I know you can throw them, but they don't even do any damage (except the later to certain mobs). I think you should put them in utility, or at least some more fitting section.73.208.227.101 13:51, 16 February 2020 (UTC)

Number of Items

I think it might be useful to have the amount of all items within certain categories on the page for items, so you can for example check, how big you want to build a storage system. The categories I would find useful are:

  • items in the game
  • items obtainable in survival
  • items stackable to 64
  • items stackable to 16
  • non-stackable items

This should count variants of the same block (e.g. with wood or wool) separately. I hope someone has an idea, how to get these numbers without counting manually. --Niklalt (talk) 02:38, 31 August 2020 (UTC)

  1. Items in the game have already been counted (see the Item page)
  2. Most Items are available in survival (excluding idk)
  3. Most are stacked to that
  4. Snowballs, eggs, ender pearls, not much else
  5. Tools/armor, not much else
  6. Note, blocks are not items
  7. Done

Adding the command block

I just thought that I didn't see command block on the items section, I just don't know where to add it couse I'm not as good as all of you please have athoight on this please Pokecraftians23 (talk) 06:18, 28 September 2020 (UTC)

Command blocks aren't items, they are blocks that can exist in the world, not just in the player's hands or inventory. ~ Amatulic (talk) 06:59, 28 September 2020 (UTC)
