Avoiding redundancy in this page
An anonymous contributor to this wiki recently added information to this page (showing how you could have a lower Efficiency level but the Haste effect, and still mine instantly, etc.) This is accurate, but makes the page somewhat repeating, as shown below:
| Netherite Shovel | Efficiency III | |
| Diamond Shovel | Efficiency III Haste I |
|
| Diamond Shovel | Efficiency IV |
Moreover, keeping the same logic, this could be expanded even further by talking also about iron pickaxes, gold pickaxes, etc. with various Efficiency and Haste levels, making the page almost unreadable.
To avoid this redundancy, I think we should only show the simplest way to break blocks in a survival context. Here is the list I propose, from simplest to hardest:
- unenchanted wooden -> stone -> iron -> diamond tools
- enchanted diamond tools (without Haste)
- enchanted netherite tools (without Haste)
- enchanted netherite tools (with Haste)
- enchanted gold tools (with Haste)
Haste is pushed at the end because it's more end-game than everything else, and also because it only has practical uses in player bases, and obviously not in the wild. Gold tools are at the very end because they aren't a viable option in survival, and are only there for the completeness of the page.
If you have objections, please answer to this post. Sagessylu (discuss | edits) 10:12, 11 July 2020 (UTC)
- The information is still useful. Netherite and diamonds are very expensive, so it makes sense to list what levels of efficiency one would need on lower tier items to instant mine certain blocks. For example, I looked this page up to see what level of efficiency I'd need on a diamond shovel, because I'm not wasting my netherite on that - although I might just save the diamond and go for iron with mending. I propose the following:
Netherite Shovel Efficiency III Diamond Shovel Efficiency III
Haste IEfficiency IV

- Alternatively, the combinations of tools, efficiency, and haste should be in order of speed, such that any combination can also mine the blocks that a combination below it can. Each combination should be listed, even if it does not enable any blocks to be instant mined a combination below it already doesn't, so there could be lines like:
- Which would be combined with the above suggestion for combinations with identical speeds. Blue Banana whotookthisname (talk) 14:34, 30 July 2020 (UTC)

Java vs Bedrock Edition?
Can there be some indication as to whether this information is applicable to Java or Bedrock edition or both? 207.181.226.129 17:18, 3 August 2020 (UTC)
- No indication is given when page content is applicable to current releases of both editions; Template:Only is used when a feature is exclusive to a certain edition. --Underfell Flowey (talk) 17:38, 3 August 2020 (UTC)
I just edited the history section. I noticed that in release 1.2.5, shears cannot break leaves as rapidly as they currently do, but in release 1.3.1, they work exactly as they do today. However due to the limitations of the launcher, I cannot verify the exact snapshot when this feature was added. Can anyone with the proper resources help with this? Hi! Just like to know how you found out the exact snapshot.
Also, there's another change happening in 1.3.1. Before this version, tools lose durability even if the broken block can be instantly mined by hand. I'm not sure which snapshot they changed this either. Can you help with this as well?

- For the first part, almost every Java Edition version page has a download on the infobox. You can download the cilent and .json, then create a folder in
.minecraft\versionswith the snapshot name, then put both the cilent and json in that folder and rename both the cilent and json to the folder name. Secondly, the change happens in 12w24a. – Unavailablehoax (talk) 23:07, 13 October 2020 (UTC)
Thanks a lot! I'll edit the corresponding pages. Windwend (talk) 01:26, 14 October 2020 (UTC)
Tutorial?
I was thinking that this page should be in the tutorial section. I don't know how to do this, and not sure if I have permission, but it would be pretty reasonable to have this in the tutorial section block-breaking or farming, if you could handle that. Suggestion on making the table look neater
For important combinations such as diamond pickaxe, Efficiency V and Haste II, I'm totally okay with that. But things like Efficiency IV + Haste I, or Efficiency III + Haste II, looks pretty messy. I suggest to not add Haste unless it is paired with Efficiency V, because Haste is quite a late-game effect, and players care more about what a certain level of Efficiency can do, than how a non-full Efficiency level combines with Haste.
Also, the jumbo of different tool materials looks pretty messy. I don't think anyone would want to enchant a golden pickaxe or a stone hoe with Efficiency V, so that is pretty useless in my opinion. Facts like unenchanted golden pickaxe capable of instant mining netherrack is neat (and it is used in speedruns), but I doubt if we should give enchanted tools that are not diamond or netherite so much emphasis. - I think the article should focus on documenting the data, since it cannot be found anywhere else. Arbitrarily deciding what technical information to include in lists like these based on how important it is judged to be is only going to lead to problems, especially in long term. The combinations of effects are not that numerous, so at the moment, at least, the table is very readable in my opinion, but that may only be because the list is incomplete - but even if it becomes hard to read with more information, I'd rather support restructuring the list than cutting information. We could also have a second article, Tutorials/Instant mining, with focus on only the most essential blocks and combinations of materials and enchantments. Missing some blocks
I was updating a datapack of mine called "Mineable" and noticed something. Maybe I am mistaken, but I believe the following blocks can be instantly mined with any tool (or without a tool). I don't see them listed in the "(none)" entry on the table.
"minecraft:end_rod", "minecraft:fire", "minecraft:frogspawn", "minecraft:kelp", "minecraft:kelp_plant", "minecraft:soul_fire"
The following are not listed anywhere on the page AFAICT. They should be under "Unaffected by Efficiency".
"minecraft:turtle_egg", "minecraft:bamboo_sapling" (i.e. bamboo shoots) "minecraft:ochre_froglight", "minecraft:pearlescent_froglight", "minecraft:verdant_froglight", "minecraft:sea_pickle"
Also, the section with unbreakable blocks lists bubble columns but not other blocks that lack a hitbox such as air, light blocks, etc. I'm not sure if water and lava are still considered blocks now that fluids are a thing, but I just checked and it seems I can /setblock them, at least. Anyway, here is a full list of such blocks in case it's useful:
"minecraft:air", "minecraft:bubble_column", "minecraft:cave_air", "minecraft:lava", "minecraft:light", "minecraft:moving_piston", "minecraft:structure_void", "minecraft:void_air", "minecraft:water",
I'm not sure how much of this info is suitable to add to the page. If bubble columns made the list think I think it makes sense to add water and light blocks to the list of unbreakable blocks but the others might be better to omit. Or perhaps bubble columns should just be removed. Alternatively, maybe a new entry should be added for blocks that don't have a hitbox and bubble columns could move there.
Anyway FWIW, I only noticed all of this because I recently did some scripting to automatically find all blocks missing from the 'mineable' tags for my Mineable data pack. When I saw the results, I realized there must be some blocks missing from this page since that's what I was using before to track such blocks.
