The following rules are in effect for this talk page.
Continued violations will result in further action.

1. Herobrine is not real.
Topics and posts saying otherwise will be removed.

2. Discussing the fact that he is not real is pointless.
This includes responding to posts breaking rule 1. These will be removed as well.

3. Do not post stories.
This is a wiki talk page, not a forum. We are dedicated to fact checking and adding further developments, not to indulge in roleplay or ghost stories.

4. Suggestions and ideas to change who he is, how he acts, or other aspects of Herobrine cannot be honored.
The Minecraft Wiki treats the original image and the Brocast livestreams as the only canonical sources.

The Herobrine page was created to document an extremely popular community phenomenon created by an anonymous player and recognized by Mojang Studios.
Herobrine was never real and spamming this talk page saying otherwise is a disservice to the community.

Deletion of Page

I was browsing the wiki, and decided to go to the [minecraft.gamepedia.com/Entity_303 Entity 303] page. I noticed it was deleted, because it violated Rule #19 (now Rule #4): no hoaxes/legends. This definitely falls under that category, and thus I believe it should be deleted. Observer (front texture) pBE20160502.png TySkyo (TalkContribs) 17:11, 10 July 2016 (UTC)

Brocraft Stream Footage found?

Curious, I decided to try and search for the original Brocraft stream, and I found a video on YouTube which shows what seems to be exactly this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LXE-FKSv8c Is this legitimate footage? The sound was taken out and replaced with just creepy ambience, and the footage was only of the Herobrine sighting and nothing else, but I do believe this was the original footage. It even included a part at the end which wasn't documented anywhere: The streamer running out of the room, and straight into a lava pool, where he turns around right before dying to see Herobrine again, watching him. Someone might wanna add this into the page somewhere. ISmile02 (talk) 06:27, 25 September 2016 (UTC)

Quote being overlapped

The quote "It has been reported that some victims of torture, during the act, would retreat into a fantasy world from which they could not..." is overlapped by the image File:HerobrineBrocastCreepyPage.gif. -Xbony2 (talk) 11:19, 28 May 2017 (UTC)

No longer a legacy account

I decided to look it over again. The statement which I previously added is no longer the case: the API no longer returns "legacy":true. Plenty of speculation can be made from this, which I won't engage in here. In any case, you can see the old archive from 15 Feb 2015 10:38:23 UTC and a fresh archive from just now; some time in the past two and a half years the account was migrated (and that strongly implies active use). The statement in the article should probably be updated (though, it'd be great to have a more precise date). --Pokechu22 (talk) 06:53, 25 July 2017 (UTC)

No capital “a” in “after removing all non-alphabet characters”

In the section “Origins and popularity”, just before the quote

It has been reported that some victims of torture, during the act, would retreat into a fantasy world from which they could not WAKE UP. In this catatonic state, the victim lived in a world just like their normal one, except they weren't being tortured. The only way that they realized they needed to WAKE UP was a note they found in their fantasy world. It would tell them about their condition, and tell them to WAKE UP. Even then, it would often take months until they were ready to discard their fantasy world and PLEASE WAKE UP.

there is no capital “a” in “Below the face, there are a jumble of characters and letters. after removing all non-alphabet characters, the following message is revealed:” --Cherryblossom000 (talk) 07:17, 25 July 2017‎ (UTC)

Entity 303

Should I start a sandbox about Entity 303? – Dentedharp90041tce 14:08, 16 October 2017 (UTC)

Is it recognized by Mojang in any way? If not, I personally don't think it deserves a page on this wiki. --Pepijn (talk) 14:32, 16 October 2017 (UTC)
Mojang somewhat recognizes Entity 303 because Notch tweeted something related to it (can't cite sources due to gphelp:Gamepedia AWS Migration). – Dentedharp90041tce 23:43, 16 October 2017 (UTC)
I'd say no. Doesn't deserve any mention. I'm the maintainer of wiki.vg's Entities article. No entity 303. --Pokechu22 (talk) 23:51, 16 October 2017 (UTC)
Can you please state your reason of disagreeing? – Dentedharp90041tce 00:37, 17 October 2017 (UTC)
We only have this page because Herobrine has been repeatedly referenced by Mojang. As a rule, the wiki does not document community fanfiction/creepypasta/hoaxes/whatnot. I'm not sure why the migration would prevent linking to Twitter, but a single tweet isn't likely to be enough justification for another exception to our policy. -- Orthotopetalk 03:22, 17 October 2017 (UTC)

Photoshopped image

On the article, there is the image file:screenshotttt.png, captioned "The image Copeland photoshopped, which led to him starting the hoax stream"; I think the image should be annotated (either in the caption or drawn on the image) to mark where Herobrine is. It took me a couple minutes to find him.Slscool (talk) 20:57, 11 November 2017 (UTC)

I think images from other people must not be edited unless they will give us permission to do so. Therefore, it should not be annotated. – Dentedharp90041tce 10:29, 27 November 2017 (UTC)

Archival of the talk page requested

I would like to request the archival of this talk page. I have been away from moderation for some time, and do not know how to do so myself.

I have combed through each issue, and have applied fixes as I saw reasonable. I have also merged the editcopy with the main page, and will refresh the editcopy immediately after posting this comment. I'd like to try to get this page to a new, refreshed point. archive the talk page that has gone on for 2 years, and bring in a clean slate page. Could an admin sort this out for me? --Kizzycocoa 22:33, 7 December 2017 (UTC)

It's probably worth discussing lowering the protection of this page (the regular page, not the talk page) to autoconfirmed. Dinoguy1000 suggested it on the community portal talk page; others were opposed to it, seeing it as a big vandal magnet, but I'm doubtful. It's still an important community symbol but I believe most of the "Herobrine hype" is over. I would like to take a scientific approach however rather than speculate, so I propose two things. One, I request that Dinoguy1000 or another admin contact Gamepedia staff (alianin in particular) and ask for the viewing statistics to see how much attention this article gets, as I think that could be an important factor. It might not even be in the top 100 pages. Two, I suggest that we just do a trial run of lowering the protection to autoconfirmed for a week, then maybe a month, and reintroduce it if it is a problem. I would like to point out that on this talk page, the amount of recent discussion is very small compared to the amount of discussion in the past (see the boom of discussion from 2010-2014, with 8 archives, compared with the lack of discussion from 2014-2017, with 1 archive, on this talk page). Surely there was plenty of debate when the page was first made, but it is still extremely disproportionate. Secondly, the last time something was removed from this talk page for being dumb was in January 2016, over two years ago. Clearly the autoconfirm was enough to keep away the kiddos on this page. Talk pages are different from regular pages but that's still pretty good for something declared a vandal magnet :P -Xbony2 (GRASP) (FTB Wiki Admin) (talk) 02:27, 28 January 2018 (UTC)

I don't really see the benefit gained from unprotecting this page. This page will not need any changes for a long time, if ever. It's not really "canon" besides mentions in updates, there's no more info that has to be added. --Pepijn (talk) 04:23, 28 January 2018 (UTC)
It's worth noting that the editcopy hasn't received any reverted or undone edits since 2015. I can understand the concerns of those who were active on this page when Herobrine was still a huge thing in the community, but I'm not convinced full protection is warranted any longer, and having the page unnecessarily fully protected discourages good edits that would otherwise be made, even with an editcopy (since that's another step to getting an edit published on the page, and one with a delay at that). ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 16:27, 30 January 2018 (UTC)

Can Herobrine/StreamStory and Herobrine/StreamFAQ also have their protection levels decreased to autoconfirmed? I can't see much need for these to be edited, but having them remain protected to admins-only level whilst the main page isn't still seems over the top. - User-12316399 (talk) 13:56, 12 March 2019 (UTC)

Herobrine is completely different from Entity 303. Plus Herobrine is much more popular than Entity 303. There is not much imformation for Entity 303 other than communtiy hoax. If we create this article, we would just be writing false information. skylord_wars (talk) 04:43, 2 June 2018 (UTC)
I actually agree that the article should be kept and redirect to Herobrine. Herobrine mentions this topic, and it mentions clearly that it's not real, so unless I'm missing something, I don't see any problem with having it. I definitely would want to at least semi-protect it if it were created.-- Madminecrafter12Orange Glazed Terracotta JE2 BE2.pngTalk to meLight Blue Glazed Terracotta JE1 BE1.png 00:45, 16 June 2018 (UTC)

I don't think it should be removed. It's related to the article somewhat, and as long as we make the reality clear I see no harm with having it there.-- Madminecrafter12Orange Glazed Terracotta JE2 BE2.pngTalk to meLight Blue Glazed Terracotta JE1 BE1.png 13:55, 18 October 2018 (UTC)
Related it is, but so is every single piece of Herobrine-inspired creepypasta. Unless we're going to give special treatment to things Notch tweets after his retirement (why not mention that stuff about Steve's penis and sexual activities too then?), I don't see how Entity 303 information can be justified as a valid part of the Herobrine article. --AttemptToCallNil (report bug, view backtrace) 14:01, 18 October 2018 (UTC)
Support the removal of all "entity 303" related information from the page. Herobrine has been actually mentioned by Mojang staff and even appears in the game's changelog, while "entity 303" is just a little-known creepypasta which isn't notable enough to get mentioned in this wiki. If we include information about "entity 303" in this wiki, then it means we have to write an article about every other minecraft-related creepypasta and horror story as well, which would be totally pointless. 05:41, 19 October 2018 (UTC)
I think nobody else will join the discussion, and I agree with ATCN; we don't mention every piece of rumors on that page, why is entity 303 an exception? Additionally, there's only 2 mentions of it on that page, which is not really worth keeping to begin with.
Support deleting entity 303 information, and when done, removing this talk page, as it's a talk page of a deleted page. FVbico (talk) 13:27, 7 March 2019 (UTC)
Ok, in that case I've simply  Removed all Entity 303 related info from Herobrine, as there seems to be a rough consensus to do so (out of not much participation). I was neutral about removing the information myself; the only reason I supported restoring this redirect to begin with is because the Herobrine page talked about Entity 303.--Madminecrafter12 (Talk to me | View what I've done) 14:25, 7 March 2019 (UTC)

Needs list of published appearances

My son was reading a novel in a Minecraft setting that included Herobrine as a character. I don't remember what it was (or even where it is, my home is a mess).

Nevertheless, the fact that Herobrine appears in published fiction (not fan fiction, not self-published books, but actual books by legitimate publishers) is far more significant and deserving of mention than much of what's in this article now. ~ Amatulic (talk) 22:58, 21 April 2019 (UTC)

If you can try to recall the name of the book, I could look it up. -BDJP (t|c) 23:19, 21 April 2019 (UTC)
I'll name it when I find it.
Apparently there are a lot of legitimate published works involving Herobrine, particularly the book series published by Skyhorse Publishing under their Sky Pony imprint for children and young adults. Here's an example by a New York Times best-selling author: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1510709940/ - scroll down to the author's biography, which describes more about Minecraft books this author has written.
And here is a list of paperback Herobrine books (the search deliberately excludes Kindle books). ~ Amatulic (talk) 02:35, 22 April 2019 (UTC)
Unfortunately, it appears that none of these books are licensed by Mojang, in which such a license from them would be required for it to be shown here. -BDJP (t|c) 03:42, 22 April 2019 (UTC)
In addition, these appearances are non-canonical, so they wouldn’t be posted here anyway. -BDJP (t|c) 03:44, 22 April 2019 (UTC)
I would argue that notable appearances (like becoming a best-seller, or being written by a notable best-selling author) are relevant regardless of licensing. At least that would be the case on the English Wikipedia, but maybe not here. As for being canonical, is there any appearance that is? I don't see that as relevant.
My original point is still valid: That Herobrine appears in fictional works by notable authors published by legitimate publishers is way more significant and deserving of mention than what's in the article now. ~ Amatulic (talk) 04:49, 22 April 2019 (UTC)

The exact origins of Herobrine's original story and screenshot.

I'd like to talk about the exact origin of the original Herobrine story. Now, the story is said to have been posted on 4chan's /v/ board, but when it first came to the wiki on August 31, 2010, it came in the form of an image of the supposed story along with the famous screenshot.

Looking at the history page, the link to the original post of Herobrine's story on 4chan was never posted onto the wiki page, which was the most common-sense thing to do, instead, it was all contained in an image. This is too confusing, has anyone came up with a good explanation to this? How did the uploader ever acquired the original story/screenshot at all?

Herobrine's page history, all of these are the earliest changes from mid-2010.

Link to the original .jpg file containing the story and screenshot.

Meaning of the name

I'd always assumed that Mojang saying in the changelogs that they'd removed Herobrine (hero brine) was a reference to saltiness - i.e., elements of the game that made players (heroes) cry from frustration. In other words, a roundabout way of saying "we fixed some other stuff that was making players frustrated." But I take it Mojang has never officially acknowledged such an interpretation of that reference? Memetics talk | edits 14:13, 5 September 2020 (UTC)

Suspicious version

What if version Alpha 1.2.4 and Alpha 1.2.3_05 are not the same version? What if mojang wants to trick us?

(Sources: https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Java_Edition_Alpha_v1.2.3_05https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Missing_launcher_versions#Alpha_v1.2)

With that in mind, I would like someone to investigate Alpha 1.2.4, to see if it is in fact a different version of 1.2.3_05 and, who knows, to see if there is anything suspicious (Herobrine?).

To begin, can anyone with experience see if this is a modified version? Here -> http://www.mediafire.com/file/nob6i1vvjq4t7hh/file –Preceding unsigned comment was added by LlamaBrine (talkcontribs) at 23:44, 7 September 2020 (UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~

Yeah, i know, but, I would just like someone to investigate further.
Was found now that another file with a greater chance of being real on this website: https://archive.org/details/minecraft-my-collect-versions_20200906_2048
Among the versions present in this collection, there is 1.2.4 with files dated 2010, where it contains herobrine.png. It doesn't make much sense that a version modified with the Herobrine is present in a (apparently normal) collection of versions.
If someone with experience wants to investigate if it is real or not, it would be great!

The other Brocraft screenshots

The Herobrine page says that Copeland from Brocraft photoshopped Herobrine into “several” screenshots. However, only one of these is on the wiki. This image is captioned “the image Copeland edited”, implying it was the only one, but the main text says “several”.

Recently, I found this old video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clElrb1mBmw), which shows additional images with Herobrine edited into them. Interestingly, many of these have both the same version number and texture pack as Copeland’s screenshot, which makes me wonder: are these screenshots from the same source?

I’m curious about whether or not anyone knows where to find any of these other screenshots he supposedly edited, or if they ever even existed in the first place. Every time I try to look this up, all I can find is people asking questions about how to find the livestream, rather than the screenshots that supposedly preceded it, so I haven’t had much luck in answering this question myself.
