Fences
While constructing a farm, I noticed that grass will apparently never spread to or from (I'm less certain about the second) a block with a fence on top. Not sure about this since grass spread is probabilistic so I'm not adding it to the page, but if there's confirmation... —KPReid 07:04, 17 October 2010 (CDT)
- Grass is weird in alpha right now. Some grass seems to stay alive in odd places, its living under fence, but wont spread under it? Theres grass in the bottom of a pond i made too, and its been there for a while. Grass supposedly needs light to live, so why is grass still there in covered up creeper-craters? I dont know.Toadbert –The preceding undated comment was added on 17:30, 17 October 2010. Please sign your posts with ~~~~
- Same happens with glass. Nbord –The preceding undated comment was added on 21:45, 21 November 2010. Please sign your posts with ~~~~
- Perhaps the game won't let it grow there because the fence still counts as a "block." It won't grow there because it thinks there is a block on top. This may also explain the problem I had a while ago; I set up a path of dirt to grow some gras into my base, but there was no grass growing where I had placed a sign. It took me hours to figure out why it wouldn't grow. –Preceding unsigned comment was added by Buster2Xk (Talk|Contribs) 10:55, 11 December 2010. Please sign your posts with ~~~~
- It doesnt spread under fences, torches, doors or glass... maybe it just doesnt spread when under a block? -F1racer101 04:56, 11 December 2010 (CST)
- It appears to spread under all pseudo blocks that will occupy a block but aren't solid. So torches, minecart tracks, redstone all will be spread to but fences and glass still count as solid --Flippeh 00:00, 22 January 2011 (UTC)
Animals
Grass is used to deturming where animals can spawn. If you get grass to grow in a deep cave then animals can spawn there.--Tnarg 18:47, 21 October 2010 (CDT)
Grass Spawning
I know that dirt cubes will spawn new grass if they are close enough to another grass cube. What are the rules for this? Do they need to be orthogonal? Does it only happen with enough light? How far away (horizontally and vertically) can the dirt cube be from grass for a chance of grass spawning? --Mozai 18:55, 27 November 2010 (CST)
- I've been putting a bit of research into this, not complete yet but I figured I'd dump my notes here so as not to forget them... Alpha 1.2.6 of course (current at the time of writing).
- Grass seems to require a minimal light level of 4 to grow (keeping in mind that a torch provides 14, meaning it'll grow up to ten tiles away from a single torch in an otherwise dark area). It will only grow if another grass tile is next to it (diagonal joins count). Grass may spread up to one dirt block higher, or three dirt blocks lower, then the grass block in concern - I've yet to conclusively test how far away it can be on the horizontal plane, but it seems there's a no-gap limitation there. It seems grass travels downhill significantly faster then it does uphill (it may take multiple game days to go up a block, whereas downhill travel tends to happen within a real world minute). I'm uncertain yet whether grass may travel diagonally downhill at two/three blocks lower then the source block, but it may certainly travel up/down a single block along the diagonal (although uphill diagonal travel takes an age).
- Grass will not die if deprived of light, however, placing another solid block on top of it will eventually revert it back to dirt. - Bomb Bloke 13:15, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
Beta 1.5
Is anyone else having a problem with the sides of grass blocks appearing as a black-ish color since the update? It seems to be similar to the texture used for "Crying Obsidian" except colored green instead of blue. --Teska Jadestar 16:56, 19 April 2011 (UTC)
- Are you using a texture pack from beta 1.4_01 or earlier? That might still have the Crying Obsidian texture. Zkyo 17:07, 19 April 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, I was. I feel a little stupid now lol :p tyvm :)--Teska Jadestar 18:54, 19 April 2011 (UTC)
In my minecraft I just straight out am not receiving the new side grass feature? On Painterly it appears as gray side grass, but on default it appears as the original side grass? Anyone else getting this issue or know how to fix? --Pikimon 20:38, 19 April 2011 (UTC)
Since the 1.5 update grass will not grow below y 62 for me (y 61 and lower), is this part of the update? testing and confirmation please?--Pirate34 04:47, 21 April 2011 (UTC)
- The grass has been confirmed (by me) to go (at least) to y 42. I don't see why there should be a minimum level for grass so there probably isn't one. --Zurokiar 06:21, 24 April 2011 (CET)
Half-Blocks
I noticed that if a stone slab(stone or cobblestone) is placed on grass, the grass doesn't disappear like it would with a regular block. However, I did a test and it seems that a half-block placed on dirt WILL stop grass from spreading to that block. If two half-blocks are stacked on top of each other, the grass then acts as it would with normal blocks. Interesting... Basilisk 06:07, 22 July 2011 (UTC)
Is this going to spread grass?
I'm trying to get grass to grow on a rooftop garden I'm working on and I need to know if the current alignment will 'draw up' the grass from the ground and allow it to grow on the roof.
Don't know how to work pictures on the wiki, so I'll just say it. I've got grass on the floor outside and I've got my rooftop garden on the roof of the building (4 blocks high). I've got a diagonal line of dirt blocks going from the ground to the roof, and torches on top of all the blocks. Will it grow? Paradeoxy 06:54, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
- The grass can grow upwards one block at a time and forwards one block at a time, so if I understood you right, you have stairs of dirt from gorund to the roof, so it will grow there, eventually. It can be quite slow however, so you could speed it up by making the dirt stairs wider. | TheKax | Talk 15:38, 7 August 2011 (UTC)
Is it possible for...
Is it possible for grass to change color? I know it's biome specific, but in a server I play in, I built my house in a forest with the bright green grass of forest biomes. Recently, the grass has turned into the ugly savannah color. All the trees have been cut down in that area though, could that cause a biome to change? --Thek826 15:21, 2 September 2011 (UTC)
Name
If we are changing all the wiki names to the in-game ones, we should change Grass to Grass Block and Tall Grass to Grass, and, maybe, make a disambiguation page, like Gold.
What do you think of my proposal? Write it below.--Ua 09:00, 1 November 2011 (UTC)
Fences
Are animals (or passive mobs) still spawning exclusively on grass? I read that they rarely spawn at all, after chunk generation, but when they do, the block they spawn on does not really matter (exceptions being desert biomes). ~ Felcis 14:57, 9 December 2011 (UTC)
Faster growth with rain?
I'm trying to spread grass over a long dirt trail. Between moments of checking on it while I'm AFK, I notice that the grass seems to spread faster when it's raining. I don't know for sure though.108.76.103.35 19:49, 25 December 2011 (UTC)
Can it spread from Tall Grass?
Can grass spread on dirt from tall grass? {{subst:unsigneedIP2|09:08, 26 February 2012|79.113.90.184}}
- Definitely not. I ran an underground chicken coop for in-game WEEKS with lots and lots of tall grass.
- no short grass occured. –Preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.18.8.160 (Talk) 05:03, 28 February 2012. Please sign your posts with ~~~~
Grass-Light Interaction?
While messing around in a superflat map, I dug down to bedrock (so, a 1x2 tunnel, roof of grass, floor of bedrock), and noticed that I never had to light it. I covered up all sources of light with grass (blocks, notice), and I still did not need light. I have TMI, so I set the time to night and discovered that the tunnel went dark. Bug? Side-affect of being on superflat? Good way to have sunlight in secret underground lairs? Skyminer707 02:47, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
- Hmm, that seems strange. Are you sure that it is not the result of your mod? I'll test it, but please make sure to test in a Vanilla Minecraft. MaryTheTiger 18:46, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
- Note the date on that comment. There was a major bug in 1.2.3 (the current version at the time) where sunlight could pass through solid blocks to illuminate caves and such. It was fixed in 1.2.4 . -- Orthotope 08:52, 27 July 2012 (UTC)
Section
I have recently noticed that the Grass Block is in the Plants section. Shouldn't it be in the Natural section? Just my opinion. MaryTheTiger 18:36, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
Unrenewable?
I noticed that in the article, it says: Renewable: No. Technically, with the right requirements, it is renewable, as with an enchanted tool with silk touch, you can simply wait for grass to spread to dirt, which infinitely generates (besides the far lands). Although dirt is not renewable, it is common. Therefor making grass renewable to an extent. I did not edit it in case I discover i am wrong, or someone else proves me wrong. Trigger hurt 13:33, 9 October 2012 (UTC)
- Renewability has nothing to do with how much of something is generated; if you were to generate the entire map that Minecraft can handle (and, of course, had the storage to save it), the map would contain an arbitrarily large quantity of pretty much anything you'd care to go after - even stuff like mossy cobblestone or emerald ore.
- By contrast, renewability only looks at whether a given item or block can be generated or obtained by the player in such a way that it does not consume nonrenewable items/blocks. Dirt, which is nonrenewable, is consumed to generate grass, so grass is also nonrenewable. 「ディノ奴千?!」? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 05:16, 10 October 2012 (UTC)
- Oh that makes sense, then that is another reason that Nether stars are unrenewable since wither skeletons drop their heads but soul sand is not infinite. Hmpf. Which makes cobblestone and stone renewable because lava and water can interact in such a way that makes them infinite. Well thank you for the tip, i didn't want to go doing something stupid to the article that everyone else knew was wrong Trigger hurt 10:29, 10 October 2012 (UTC)
Grass Paths
I noticed there wasn't a link or reference to grass paths in the thing. I copied a line from the grass path page when i noticed that someone put grass paths onto "dying". A stupid move in my opinion, so killed that and put it under uses. Lightningtow (talk) 03:46, 7 October 2016 (UTC)
