Idea?[]
When i was reading it says it points to your spawn point... i think you should add a thing to reset your compass to current location so that you can have it point wherever you want –Preceding unsigned comment was added by Imbloodless (Talk|Contribs) 22:00, 23 December 2010. - It's not implemented in the game so it won't be written about here. To submit ideas you should go to http://www.getsatisfaction/mojang Metalhannes 22:12, 23 December 2010 (UTC)
- whoops thanks didnt see that –Preceding unsigned comment was added by Imbloodless (Talk|Contribs) 20:56, 24 December 2010. Please sign your posts with ~~~~
Spawn point direction[]
The last paragraph in the description needs to be changed and I can't do so. I tested the compass after using a bed and it points to the original spawn point, for now at least. –Preceding unsigned comment was added by TopherLude (Talk|Contribs) 22:39, 25 February 2011. - I also tested my compass after using a bed, and it does not point to my original spawn point, nor does it point to my new spawn point. Instead it points to a location about halfway between the two. I have also tried destroying the compass completely and making a new one, and the same thing happens. --Teska Jadestar 23:22, 6 April 2011 (UTC)
- Merged it into its own topic. It has always pointed to my original spawn point, and I die quite frequently.--SpyroCraft007 was here 17:13, 14 May 2011 (UTC)

The compass icon in the statistics menu points at the spawn point, so now you don't even have to have 4 iron ingots, 1 redstone and a workbench with you if you want to see your spawn location without using the items. You need to have crafted the compass once before, though, to get it to appear there. Wandurr 17:07, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
Spawn point reset when you sleep[]
As of Beta 1.4 it was announced that every time you sleep, your spawn point is reset to your current location and the compass points to your new location. Due to a bug this didn't actually get fixed until Beta 1.6. IMHO this is a shame as how am I suppose to find my way back home? --Quatermass 18:46, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
- IMHO i don't get what that has to do with the compass PAGE ON A WIKI! If you want to complain go to the forums....--Yurisho 18:56, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
Texture Pack?[]
I'm making a texture pack of my own, but I can't get the compass' dial to appear, making it look like just a compass and no dial/needle. What I know is that it's in the gui folder, but I don't know what exactly is making it work. Any ideas or recommendations or suggestions as to what I should change or what I could be doing wrong? –Preceding unsigned comment was added by Harris012 (Talk|Contribs) 01:02, 9 October 2011. Compass in SMP[]
In 1.0.1 (though I noticed the issue earlier) my compass never seems to point to the original spawn on SMP. I make a point of building my first base at spawn, but any compasses built inside always point way off in some other direction. I can't remember when this bug started, but it's still happening in 1.0. No one else seems to be complaining about it, so is it indeed happening to everyone?
I forgot to mention that it also usually fixes itself if I log out and back in; though not always. 216.232.215.121 02:05, 12 December 2011 (UTC)
- Yes! This has been happening to me for as long as I can remember, but I've found no way to fix it other than using bukkit plugins. It only happens when I host and play the server from the same computer. Please, someone help! 24.68.53.212 20:25, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
I think this is the same Bug KnightMiner ref's. 2 entries after this; I find it generally puts me roughly 1,000 Blocks (this can be linear, or horizontal + vertical, a diagonal, so it depends on how I count) in the co ordinates, from the most usual, Spawn. It seems to hit me about 1 /10th of the time - yeah, going to the Nether, could easily explain that - and I tend to consider it a rare but important event, like the (re fixed) Zombie Sieges, take Extra precautions for that (make a new label at the "new," pseudo Spawn), too. With SPC[]
With single player commands, apparently the compass will allow you to teleport through walls. Unfortunately, you NEED the correct version of single player commands to do it. –Preceding unsigned comment was added by CtelinAjira (Talk|Contribs) 20:03, 1 March 2012. Please sign your posts with ~~~~
- The main wiki articles are about vanilla Minecraft, without any mods. Otherwise, they would be full of "This is how it works, but if you install this mod it's different." —kpreid 21:49, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
north pole change?[]
I was playing single player after installing the redstone update , and noticed that the "north pole" of my compass has changed! I built a structure on the original spawn point and the new one is in a different biome. Anyone else seen this? 58.8.232.186 05:03, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
I am currently staring right a a bug where I got lost in the Nether and took the first gate I could find back to the Overworld, and now my compass says North is in the center of a jungle biome I have never seen before. Does anyone know if the Compass ever points to the South Pole as well? Like I say, I got pretty thoroughly lost. 50.99.41.189 20:54, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
The compass does not point north, it points to your world's spawn point, which is normally fairly near 0,0. If that has changed with the redstone update, it's a bug to report on Mojira. --Mental Mouse 21:22, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
I got a similar issue: my compass started to point a random place instead of my spawn point, fortunately not far from it. I committed suicide to check where I would respawn. I rezzed on my initial spawn point, and when I retrieved my compass it pointed to the right place again. 79.93.98.51 17:47, 1 January 2014 (UTC)
- That is a bug I read about some time ago, where sometimes after leaving the nether with a compass, it will point to 8,8 (middle of 0,0 chunk) instead of the correct spawn point, see MC-679. It fixes itself after relogging, respawining, or some time. --KnightMiner (talk|contribs) 17:57, 1 January 2014 (UTC)
Split Page?[]
The result of the discussion was Do not split. Pretty heavy opposition and not a single full support. May warrant another discussion if more uses are added to the lodestone compass, but the pages will stay unsplit for now.
A good amount of users have suggested to split contents of this page to a separate page of lodestone compass. Also needs more info on the lodestone compass.--ShockingArtist (talk) 23:03, 25 March 2020 (UTC)
- Opposed to splitting. The lodestone compass is a regular compass, NBT-data and name of which were modified. It is identical to compass, has the same id and can even be used to create maps, but points to a lodestone instead of a spawn point and has an enchanted glow. Underfell Flowey (talk) 09:26, 26 March 2020 (UTC)
- Oppose for the same reason as above. Lê Duy Quang (Make some words | Contributions) at 13h15:56 – 5 | 26/3/2020 (UTC)
Pages are merged back together when in discussion.--ShockingArtist (talk) 12:48, 26 March 2020 (UTC)
- Oppose Not needed to split, as mentioned by above--ShockingArtist (talk) 13:24, 26 March 2020 (UTC)
- Oppose If Stone and Smooth Stone are still the same page, when stone has actual uses, while SS is just decoration and slabs. Lodestone is literally an enchanted, renamed, and re-oriented compass. -FezEmerald (Talk to me|See what I've been up to) 15:15, 26 March 2020 (UTC)
- Oppose The only difference is where it points.
- @FezEmerald: There is a discussion to split stone, but these types of compasses are more similar. The Blobs 16:28, 26 March 2020 (UTC)
- Hi, could go either way. (For example, in "Stone," Smooth Stone is solely used specially for Blast Furnace, Crafting). I just came here because I wondered if in-fact it was yet-automatically assigned the name "Lodestone Compass," on creation. Meanwhile, If a lodestone-affected compass could-ever be re-used as a regular compass - the either way is because it might-or might not matter if craftable into a map - then Non-enchantment (it's just I think an image to help-separate them, Visually rather than an enchanted - actually - item) notwithstanding, it might not matter (I know most of mine become maps!) much. - Oppose The lodestone compass is a mechanic of the compass, and (just like is mentioned above) is just a compass with a NBT tag.--189.234.131.173 01:14, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
- I don't know if this split should be done or not. So how many opposes do we need to say we can keep the page and resolve the conflict on both sides? –Preceding unsigned comment was added by ShockingArtist (talk • contribs) at 13:34, 29 March 2020 (UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~
- Oppose to splitting. If in the future they add a lot more new features to lodestone compass, i would support. --dr03ramos (talk) Admin wiki[pt] 18:18, 5 April 2020 (UTC)
