Spawning Rate[]

How often do cats spawn, because I have been hanging out in a village for several days with none spawning. Could it be because I made the world and generated the village before the Christmas Update (I'm on bedrock edition)?73.208.227.101 23:25, 16 December 2018 (UTC)

From what I've seen in Java Edition, they didn't start spawning until the villages were updated. Milo359 (talk) 08:49, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
Villages with no villagers don't seem to spawn cats. Davebailey (talk) 18:05, 14 July 2019 (UTC)

From what I’ve seen, as long as a village is big enough (20 villagers and 10 beds), there should be a few stray cats that spawn. Good luck trying to make them your pet though 😂 TBFTE123 (talk) 21:11, 28 September 2020 (UTC)

Bedrock Edidition[]

I'm sad you cant get a cat in bedrock edition :( RealAnaban (talk) 03:53, 13 January 2019 (UTC)

Cats can be found around villages and can be tamed with fish, or, prior to 1.8, by taming ocelots. And why do you keep writing "Edidition"? – Nixinova Nixinova sig image 1 Nixinova sig image 2 04:43, 13 January 2019 (UTC)

Because I am noob and I want cat and now I have cat :D RealAnaban (talk) 17:27, 13 January 2019 (UTC)

How to make a sitting cat move?[]

One thing I'd like to see in this article is an explanation of how to get a cat to move again once it's been commanded to sit. I haven't been able to figure it out, other than possibly attacking the cat. I have two sitting cats in my survival game (the only two in the village) and I'd like to get them to follow me around again. ~ Amatulic (talk) 06:29, 11 March 2019 (UTC)

Ah, never mind, it turned out I was making things complicated (hitting them with fish, tying a lead and pulling it until it broke, and other things). Turned out I just have to "use" any non-food or non-dye item, or even a bare hand, on the cat, and it toggles between sitting and moving. I'll update the article. ~ Amatulic (talk) 04:51, 12 March 2019 (UTC)

Laying down[]

I've noticed that if you don't command them to sit, they sometimes lay down instead of sit at the foot of the bed. I have some screenshots if anyone's interested. 65.186.41.189 01:16, 14 July 2019 (UTC)

Hey my cat doesn’t do that. Is it only on Java? 74.65.253.173 02:04, 10 May 2020 (UTC)

Leashing strays[]

Stray cats that spawn near a village (in Java Edition) can be put on a lead. It's easiest to chase a cat into water to catch it. If you then remove the lead, the cat starts to act somewhat like a tame cat. It doesn't follow you around and sometimes bolts a short distance, but lets you near it. You also can't make them sit and they seem to despawn when you leave the area for too long. I'm not sure what's going on there. Kumiponi (talk) 17:11, 5 April 2020 (UTC)

I mean if you have them leashed why not just tame them 🤷‍♂️. They’re gonna follow you anywhere anyways, and just kill some fish in the nearest river or ocean (avoid Drowned!) 🙂. The fish are also a good source of bones for peaceful players, so if you find a wolf tame him too. Also note that there’s a higher chance to get bones from fish on Bedrock. TBFTE123 (talk) 21:16, 28 September 2020 (UTC)

This is interesting behavior that I have recently observed. I noticed that stray cats weren't bolting away from me after I managed to leash one. I also nametagged it, so it would not despawn. It was still skittish, keeping its distance from me, but nothing like a freshly spawned one. It would generally just stick around the village center without really wandering off, which is nice, because my village can sort of have a life of its own without having cats sitting around or following me or teleporting everywhere. Unfortunately, it lost this behavior at one point and started behaving like a normal stray cat, and I had to chase it through the woods to leash it again. After unleashing though, it returned to being moderately skittish again. Not sure what to make of this, but it seems like somewhat intentional programming. --74.113.47.230 09:34, 20 March 2021 (UTC)

Figured it out. Relogging causes the strays to revert to their normal wild behavior. Shame, cause I thought this was really cool. --74.113.47.230 10:08, 20 March 2021 (UTC)

Um, how do I make a cat lie down?[]

So it says that on beds cats lie down. It doesn’t work is it a java edition thing for cats to lie down only? 74.65.253.173 02:02, 10 May 2020 (UTC)

Ya how do I make it lie down I’m on iPad 74.65.253.173 02:04, 10 May 2020 (UTC)

You need to be sleeping during night time for the cat to lay down on your bed and purr. And yes, this is included in the Bedrock Edition of Minecraft. I've managed to make it lie down during day on java. You need to move it towards the middle of the bed and it will lay down and purr, but I haven't tried it on bedrock. I believe it does exist. --Alecdbest (talk) 06:09, 25 September 2020 (UTC)

Also the wool cat in the Woodland Mansion is lying down. Completely irrelevant like 95% of what I say, but oh well lol. TBFTE123 (talk) 21:18, 28 September 2020 (UTC)

Black Cat Spawning[]

So the wiki states that "Additional black cats can spawn within the hut similarly to witches, however require a grass block to do so. Any other cats to spawn within the witch hut (from spawn eggs, breeding and commands without cat type set) always spawn as black.", however after doing some testing, I was able to obtain a black cat using spawn eggs and the summon command, but when I bred a black panther cat and a persian cat inside the swamp hut, the baby came out as a persian cat. I think the breeding part might either be a mistake or only a bedrock feature. I was also wondering if anyone could confirm if black cats respawn on grass blocks in the swamp huts (I tried some testing, but I wasn't too sure if I did it correctly). --CatchTheFurry (talk) 17:21, 18 October 2020 (UTC)

cats[]

i love cats so much pls add more cats mojang

Cat Spawn Conditions Unclear[]

In the "Spawning" section it says that cats need at least one villager and four beds to spawn. But in the next paragraph it also says that cats need five occupied beds. Which information is correct? Boscawinks (talk) 10:32, 20 December 2020 (UTC)

Other things are also unclear: I get that they spawn on grass, but do they have a light-level requirement? Also, are they bound by the animal spawn cap? --MentalMouse42 (talk) 23:24, 1 May 2021 (UTC)
I have been testing this in 1.17.1. Five villagers and five beds are required. Those beds must be claimed by the villagers. Also, more than one cat will spawn with only five beds. I'll report more as I continue testing. --jordanbtucker (talk) 20:42, 16 August 2021 (UTC)

Unused gray tabby cat location[]

Hello, I can't seem to find the unused grey tabby cat file on the bedrock edition files, anyone can tell me if it's on outdated game files? Chungui23 (talk) 22:51, 17 March 2021 (UTC)

I looked at an Android APK of 1.12.1.1 and found graytabby_tame.tga (an image file), but no graytabby texture. Same deal in 1.8.0.24... Same in 1.8.0.10... Same in 1.8.0.8... Seemingly it's not here, but I'll do more research. ChainSwordCS (talk) 08:37, 3 June 2021 (UTC)
Figured it out :) graytabby_tame.tga is the correct image file. As per Bedrock standards, anything that doesn't change color has its opacity set to 0 in the color data of each individual pixel. Currently investigating how to convert this to a regular texture without painstakingly converting it by hand... ChainSwordCS (talk) 12:11, 3 June 2021 (UTC)

4 cats in one breeding[]

i bred my 2 cats and i step away for 5 seconds and there are 4 more cats

Gift-granting cats and teleportation[]

This regards the recent change I made saying cats (and the gifts they drop) can appear near the player. I stated that they could appear on the other side of walls and floors, but the more I think about it, it might be that they can appear on the other side of doors and trapdoors.

Can anybody confirm?

Also, I didn't mention ceilings because I've never had one pop in above (despite their being trapdoors or even openings). Does anybody know if they can't appear up? Or is there perhaps a distance limit? SirDaddicus (talk) 00:05, 23 June 2021 (UTC)

Every time I received a gift from a cat, it just appears in my own inventory. I've never had to go looking for it. Maybe that just means the gift was dropped near enough to me that my inventory sucked it in. I don't know. I play Bedrock Edition, so Java may be different. Amatulic (talk) 02:04, 23 June 2021 (UTC)
Good point: in your replies, please mention which edition. I play Java. SirDaddicus (talk) 12:02, 23 June 2021 (UTC)

entity.cat.purreow[]

So what does this sound possibly mean? Is it possible they want to lie on a bed? 76.64.52.246 00:25, 25 July 2021 (UTC)

Cats can sometimes sleep in beds?![]

Is this exclusive to Java Edition because in Bedrock Edition I don't see cats lying on beds without sleeping on one 76.64.52.246 16:44, 1 August 2021 (UTC)

This feature also exists in Bedrock Edition. Note that only standing cat will sleep with the player. IBuckeeet T/C 16:54, 1 August 2021 (UTC)
So a cat can sometimes purr on a bed instead of sitting on it, it is intentional behavior, and is there such a thing on the article page? 99.225.26.102 13:32, 17 August 2021 (UTC)

How long do cats purr on beds?[]

So a cat randomly purrs on a bed, but it's only for a limited time, how long approximately? 99.225.26.102 21:12, 17 August 2021 (UTC)

A kitten that recently grew up doesn't teleport to the player if more than 12 blocks away[]

"If a kitten is told to sit, and grows up while the chunk it is sitting in is still loaded, it teleports to the player and materializes still sitting."

So I summoned a cat 44 blocks away with age -60 and sitting enabled, but when it grew up it is still in the same place, edition playing is Java Edition, possible this applies to Bedrock Edition? 99.225.26.102 21:26, 21 August 2021 (UTC)

Cats can sleep even without owner, found bug in bug tracker[]

So I noticed that cats can sleep when the owner was sleeping. But they can also (try to) sleep even when the owner is not sleeping. I found out this was a bug. (https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MC-157385)

So the bug is, cats can prioritize pathfinding to a bed over following the player, breeding, etc. but wonder if there is such a thing in the article? 99.225.26.102 00:57, 21 September 2021 (UTC)

Cat Names[]

The names for cat for the minecraft:husbandry/complete_catalogue advancement JSON file are different from what I expected:

Names used in Advancement criteria in Java Edition
Criteria Cat Type
textures/entity/cat/white.png White
textures/entity/cat/tabby.png Tabby
textures/entity/cat/black.png Tuxedo
textures/entity/cat/jellie.png Jellie
textures/entity/cat/siamese.png Siamese
textures/entity/cat/ragdoll.png Ragdoll
textures/entity/cat/british_shorthair.png British Shorthair
textures/entity/cat/all_black.png Black
textures/entity/cat/persian.png Persian
textures/entity/cat/calico.png Calico
textures/entity/cat/red.png Red

In particular, the criteria name for the Tuxedo got me off guard (and let to some annoyed debugging grunts from my side). So I think it is relevant to mention this on the main page somewhere. What is the best place? Under "Appearance", under "Data Values" (if so, under which subheader: "Entity Data" or a new "Advancement Criteria"?) or under "Advancements"?

How often do cats of a particular type spawn?[]

OK, I've found 36 Persian cats and only one black cat in total in villages, but do cats really have a chance to spawn, or are the chances equal? 99.225.26.102 11:36, 23 October 2021 (UTC)

You mean "cats in a particular type to spawn"? 99.252.150.246 21:07, 23 October 2021 (UTC)
I'm guessing that black cats only spawn in a full moon, that's why the chances of a black cat spawning generally are low if daylight cycle is enabled? 76.65.23.240 02:47, 25 November 2021 (UTC)

Growing up?[]

What is the time for a kitten to grow up? It only says it can be speed up with cod but not the actual time!? /188.150.206.132 13:42, 16 November 2022 (UTC)

20 minutes, like every other breedable mob, as mentioned at Breeding#Baby mobs. Anomie x (talk) 00:58, 17 November 2022 (UTC)

Only land mammal based mob (excluding chickens etc.) to be immune to fall damage in Trivia?[]

Of course, this is probably common, but since cats are immune to damage, along with others (including chickens, and bats), but since some/most of the (immune mobs)[1] but since some aren't in real life (snow/iron golems) or are in real life, but fly (bees, parrots) or use slow falling (chickens), maybe we could class them (and ocelots, since they're technically the same?) in the Trivia as the following:

  • Cats and ocelots are the only real non-flying mammals to be immune to fall damage.

The real, means that they exist, non-flying means they don't fly and mammals is a type of animal (including humans, dogs etc). Of course, if you don't think this is a good idea, let me know. I'm open to criticism, since I am after all, neutral. – Unsigned comment added by MrDragonBoi (talkcontribs) at 12:39, 25 December 2022 (UTC). Sign comments with ~~~~

In the Pirate Speak option they are called "Parrot Killers".[]

DO they attack parrots in-game? -Tawaki (talk) 00:33, 4 July 2023 (UTC)
