Falling from a height

In 1.8.1, falling onto a hard surface (i.e., dirt) from about 10m resulted in an additional -1 heart damage while in a boat, compared to the same fall without a boat. Sneaking while falling appears to deal even more damage to you. You remain in the boat, which remains intact. (Tests conducted without armor.)

Piloting onto partial blocks

In 1.8.1, place a 2x2 pad of slabs at the shore such that the water level is higher than the slab. Piloting onto the pad deals 0.5 - 2.5 hearts of damage, seemingly dependent on your speed before hitting the pad. You take no damage if you sneak. You remain in the boat, which remains intact. (Tests conducted without armor.)

Boat float update

Did the new update (1.7.2) get rid of the boat's ability to float up a pillar of water? Zenubis 17:38 July 06, 2011

Nope. Boats will float more slowly upward than originally or not at all depending on the water block's location relative to a solid block. If any water blocks used when attempting to travel up are directly adjacent to a solid block, they will not support upward travel. Otherwise, a water pillar alone will cause a boat to slowly travel upward. ParkourEmp7 22:44, 13 July 2011 (UTC)ParkourEmp7
Actually, that rule (downward currents are caused by water adjacent to air) used to be true, but changed along with the boat-floating. Now the requirement is that the water has to be a source block (i.e. placed by a bucket). I tested this using a boxed-in column of water which I tried to swim through — I used to swim slowest through the part of the column surrounded by glass, and now it doesn't matter but source blocks are faster. —KPReid 23:07, 13 July 2011 (UTC)

Are boats reusable?

Can a boat be returned to inventory after it has been used? I'm just about to add a line saying this cannot be done...

I don't believe it can. If you try to pick up a boat it breaks down into three sets of planks and two sticks, which isn't enough material to make a new boat... DannyF1966 21:48, 16 October 2010 (CDT)

My boat just spontaneously broke as i was going down my canal. Is that supposed to happen or did i scrape a wall?

if the spot gets too shallow the boat might hit the ground and break too, if its lower than a half block, its probably too low a spot Adi Tetac 08:49, 16 December 2010 (UTC)

The wiki currently says the following under Boat Physics "After taking enough damage over a short interval, the boat will break, dropping a boat (As of 1.2.5 and earlier, 3 wooden planks, and two sticks)", however, I just crashed on shore in 1.3.2 and it broke into pieces. I am thinking the wiki needs correcting. --TyCamden 20:29, 20 August 2012 (UTC)

Canals

Any chance someone could elaborate on this process, perhaps with a video link? I'm missing something about how this works, and what part pressure plates and the like play in the process. L33t3rth4nur1111 11:41, 8 December 2010 (CST)

Easy boat docking

If one places a source block on top of the shore directly next to the body of water, then one may navigate at full speed towards said source in a boat. When the boat comes to the source block, it will be propelled upwards and then land on the dry land behind it. If one wants to re-use the boat, all one must do is push it onto the source block and then right click it. This simple technique made using boats far easier for me.

I also had exactly the same experience with using half-slabs. Running aground at any speed doesn't break the boat (as long as the runway is long enough as to not to hit a full block behind it). To reuse boat w/o picking it up, one only has to propel the boat on the half-slabs a bit (either pushing externally or using WASD inside boat). Although practical, I think that neither of these techniques is aesthetically pleasing.

Speed

Does anyone here know how fast boats can go in non-flowing water compared to walking speed? That might be a good thing to add to the article (probably under the Riding boats or Boat physics section). Inquisitribble 22:53, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

Boat Teleportation

Should Boat Teleportation (lining up a bunch of boats and right clicking to jump from boat to boat) be mentioned in this article? I've seen videos and it's an extremely fast (although resource-consuming) method of transportation. JesusChrist666 21:38, 3 March 2011 (UTC)JesusChrist666

Boat destruction in SMP

It says, as of now on the page: Due to a bug, in multiplayer, when a boat breaks, it will drop two sticks and 3 wood planks, which you cannot pick up. They are added to your inventory upon getting close however. You can't pick them up but they get "picked up" when walked near to. What am I missing? Darkid 23:43, 8 March 2011 (UTC)

When a particular drop isn't properly supported in multiplayer, there's usually an effect where the client produces copies of the items (which the server doesn't know about, so you can't interact with them) and the server also does, which you can. So what is probably meant here is that you see 6 planks and 4 sticks, half of which can be picked up, and the other half of which stick around uselessly (in your view). I don't know whether this bug actually exists now for boats, but it does for jukeboxes, for example. Certainly the text could use rewriting (and a check to see if the bug is current). —KPReid 14:56, 9 March 2011 (UTC)

Exiting boats in SMP - lag problems

On our SMP server, when I right-click to get out of a boat, I'm always standing on top of it. When I try to step off, the server puts me back on. This continues for serveral seconds until I get lucky or the boat breaks. It's probably lag effects, but is this commmon for anyone else? Worthy of mentioning in the article? --JellyfishGreen 11:07, 16 March 2011 (UTC)

Flowing Water Speed

I was wondering if using flowing water could increase the riding speed on a boat. I've personally attempted to test this, but its not clear if it increased the speed when i accelerated on a current directed forward (with me). If it does, by how much? This topic could be included if someone could find the answer.

Two boats when quitting and returning while in a boat?

I saved and quit while in a boat, and then returned back to my world (Forgot why). I fell into the water, but when I came back out, there were two boats! I was only riding one... Anyone know why this happened? :/

Bigger boats

I would like to see something like a ferry, like you put three boats at the bottom of a workbench, one wooden plank above each boat, a furnace on the left side, a lever upper middle, and a piece of fence on the upper right, and you get a steamboat, five blocks wide, and four ghasts long, and two-however big you want upwards, and you have to put in coal or charcoal for it to run, and you steer it like a normal boat but you have to be at the lever, which is used like a steer-stick and you have to right click on it to steer, and you can built on it, make a moving city, make a ferry, or make a tower floating on water, and it travels half as fast as a normal boat. It would also be flammable, if you touched fire with it or lit it on fire it would all burn, the boat not what you put on it unless it was flammable, and you can light it with a flaming arrow, and when two ships hit each other they both stop. Also, if you make a hole in it it wont sink, so you could make a kind of dock inside of it.

I'm actually working on a monstrous idea that involves bigger, modular boats. I'll post it on GetSatisfaction when it's done. Do you want me to let you know when I have it up? --72.197.35.238 06:57, 4 October 2011 (UTC)

Sneaking on boats

I've been testing out the sneaking technique to avoid destroying my boat as I approach my dock. It works great. My boat never breaks on impact. It seems though, that getting out of a boat while still holding sneak breaks it 100% of the time. Can anyone confirm this? And if so, should it be added to the page? 76.20.78.75 15:21, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

Iron Boats

Boats can also be made from Iron, the same crafting layout as with planks, but using Iron Ingots instead.

Boat Glitch?

As of 1.2 it seems that attempting to put a boat back in your inventory after use automatically breaks the boat (yielding the usual 3 wooden planks and 2 sticks) instead of giving you a boat back. It's made my canal system null and void. Anyone have any workarounds?

I've never been able to retrieve a boat (Alpha 1.1). As far as I've ever known, breaking boats is "working as intended." Did this change at some point? KyJoCa 01:38, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

Despawning?

boats should drop themselves!

I think boast should drop themselves! mine carts do, so why not boats? sticks and wood? really?

Boats Crashing Into Squids

Not sure if this happens, if so BAD idea. I'm in the middle of a nomad survival world. I found a mushroom biome, which, as most of you know, is far away from land. I went about 7500 blocks to reach it.

Anyway, I don't want to have to swim all that way without a boat if I crash into a squid. 72.209.199.2 21:40, 3 June 2012 (UTC)

Take more than 1 boat with you, or build a nether portal. --79.204.38.83 01:04, 29 September 2012 (UTC)

Boat is in different position client vs server.

I've noticed this that boat highways, while working as intended in the server, do not display properly in the client. Even in SP, as it is a local server. For example, I've made a setup that automatically launches boats when you get in. A door opens, and it looks like you don't move an inch. However, once you get out, you teleport to the end of the highway. If the boat breaks on the way, you stay where you are, but the planks and sticks drop where they should. However, if the server side boat stops moving beyond the edge of render distance, you will proceed to fall off the world. If you then log in and out, you will appear at the end of your boat highway. This is rather strange, as the blocks which the boat is on aren't even being rendered by the client.

THis reminds me of the - new, now in 1.7.2 - Bug which I didn't even have, I could swear (could be Memory-related), earlier when testing this UpDate! A Boat will break as far as 25 Blocks, away, and I have no fore-warning, so after breaking close to 25, in SSP, now I just stay Way- far-away, from coasts. Wool does not cushion boats?

I read from several sources that boats to not break when colliding with wool, making it a good material for building docks. However when I tried this in SMP my boats shattered every time. Can anyone else confirm that this is not true? Was it perhaps true at one point but was changed? And should a note be added to the article to clear up what seems to be a common misconception? Jimbo Jambo 19:10, 17 June 2013 (UTC)

Sorry, but AFAIK, no solid block cushions boats (or falls, for that matter). Wool is a solid block like any other. Its "softness" is only fast mining speed and minimal blast resistance. The same goes for leaves. --Mental Mouse 10:47, 18 June 2013 (UTC)

Boats' buoyancy while near walls

Normally, boats will float up if they are submerged in water. However, at some point recently boats now act a little bit different. Water elevators with boats WILL NOT WORK if the boat is within one block of two or more walls. This may be a bug or intentional. Also, boats floating and sinking between one-wide walls and two-wide walls will "jump" up and down spontaneously. Replicate using this setup (photobucket screenshots)

Sinking Through Ground

If you place a boat on flat ground, slowly walk into it a tiny bit, then step back, it will sink a bit into the ground while slowly moving forward until it reaches the edge of the block it's in. When it reaches the block in front, it will bounce slightly away from it, and then bounce from the block behind. If you then right click the boat, the boat will sink into the ground even more until only your head is above the ground.--82.46.131.39 15:59, 20 August 2013 (UTC)

Boat self-terminates

After riding a boat for a while, it will simply disappear. No (known) drops, and certainly no boat. Didn't hit anything, either, squid or otherwise. I didn't read anything about boats having a durability for normal use, so I'm wondering what's up? (Note: the game is behaving a little laggy)--DaedalusMachina (talk) 09:37, 2 January 2014 (UTC)

When the boat disappears, do you fall into the water, or keep "boating"? Regardless, that sounds like the return of an old glitch. When that happens try logging out (exit game) and then log back in, then look around for the boat. --MentalMouse42 (talk) 01:14, 23 January 2014 (UTC)
Been a good while since I played around in that particular world, but that world was all kinds of messed, and I'm guessing it might have been the world build mixed with a not-terribly-great laptop. To begin our shenanigans, when I came into the world I was 20 meters below the surface of the water. Then later while boating I kept ending up in what looked like false chunks, but were most likely just normal chunks that wouldn't bloody load. After sinking into oblivion and seeing the world for mostly empty, I just wiped the place and went with a new build. I haven't boated much since then (I don't particularly care for the way the mechanics work), so haven't been able to test. --DaedalusMachina (talk) 17:51, 1 February 2014 (UTC)

Ok, so I experimented around with boats for a bit an I figured out what this bug is. Your boat isn't actually where you appear to be. After moving the boat around a bit, the boat's collision location is displaced (most likely due to the lag) even though you can see it under you. If you attempt to get out of the boat you will notice that boat will 'teleport' some distance away from you. I recommend submitting a bug report. --24.57.98.47 18:39, 27 January 2014 (UTC)
