Wiki-Attacks

Wyn, please. This is crazy! You know what I mean. Turn it off, just for a few days. I'm afraid... -- Oliver Scholz de.Wiki Admin 02:51, 10 October 2011 (UTC)

No. -- Wynthyst User Wynthyst sig icon talk 02:52, 10 October 2011 (UTC)
You are so ignorant. I can't believe it. Live with the consequences. -- Oliver Scholz de.Wiki Admin 03:13, 10 October 2011 (UTC)
Excuse me Oliver? You have had to undo 13 edits all day... the filters have caught the rest of them. Just who is being what? I have never treated you with anything other than respect, I seriously don't deserve that attitude from you. -- Wynthyst User Wynthyst sig icon talk 03:16, 10 October 2011 (UTC)
I've always treated you with respect. Even today. But some users asked me, if we can stop it. I try to do my job, at 5 am. -- Oliver Scholz de.Wiki Admin 03:33, 10 October 2011 (UTC)
edit conflictYou, sir, have no idea how wikis function. A simple look at Special:Recentchanges will tell you that the vast majority of IP contributions to this wiki are beneficial. Please at least make an attempt to make sure your ideas have even a shred of logic behind them before you post on someone's talkpage, especially if you're going to (rather ironically) call them ignorant. 129.2.129.227 03:36, 10 October 2011 (UTC)
Oliver, maybe due to the language difference, you don't understand that calling someone ignorant is a pretty disrespectful thing to say. You want me to turn off Anonymous editing because in the past 22hrs, you or your community have had to undo 13 edits. What about the anonymous edits you haven't had to undo? Your wiki is better because of their spelling corrections, additions, etc. but you don't want them to be able to do that because you guys had to undo 13 edits. The only way to attract new additions to your community is to be open to them, not afraid of them. Every wiki in the world has to deal with the bot attacks. The Dutch wiki is experiencing the same issue as you are. Any given week, 2-5 of the Curse wikis are under attack by bots, we just deal with it. The Terraria Wiki has been under attack almost since the day it was launched. -- Wynthyst User Wynthyst sig icon talk 03:45, 10 October 2011 (UTC)
yea, thanks. You understand it. But i'am at work now, more in 9 hours. -- Oliver Scholz de.Wiki Admin 04:43, 10 October 2011 (UTC)
Ok now my detailed reply. When I woke up this morning, I looked at my phone. I saw some bad anonymous editing . I started my PC and reversed it. I was awake ten minutes and it was half past four in the morning. Because I was afraid it would be still more such changes occur, I asked you to turn it off for a short time. Your "No" was bad for me. That's why I wrote my second comment. Please excuse any insult, it was early in the day. And 129.2.129.227: Thank you for your comment, but the issue is not new for Wyn and me. -- Oliver Scholz de.Wiki Admin 14:17, 10 October 2011 (UTC)
It's ok Oliver :D I'm not good when I first wake up and get unwelcome surprises either :D It just surprised me. -- Wynthyst User Wynthyst sig icon talk 19:44, 10 October 2011 (UTC)

Syntax highlight extension?

Hey Wyn, is there any possibility we could get Extension:SyntaxHightlight GeSHi installed here? Having syntax highlighting makes working with user CSS and JS (not to mention the global files) soooo much easier. Thanks! =D ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 01:33, 16 October 2011 (UTC)

I've been debating this since you posted, and am not really sure I see a big benefit for the wiki in general with this request. It would potentially benefit a very small portion of the community, and unless you are planning some grand js project to add some new and amazing functionality (that is still easy for the average user to use) I'm not sure it's really necessary. The site itself has little css, since it utilizes the very soul of the default vector skin. You know I'm not one to usually say no to a community request, and I'm willing to reconsider it, if you can point me to a discussion that demonstrates the need, and the wish of more than just yourself. Another point to mention, the vast majority of the Curse staff is at Blizzcon through this coming weekend, so I'm not sure how quickly it would be depoloyed anyway... Why don't you start a discussion on the CP and see if there is other interest in it. Give it a week for comment, and by then everyone will be back in their offices. -- Wynthyst User Wynthyst sig icon talk 07:55, 19 October 2011 (UTC)

Considering it'd probably only be you and me that'd really need syntax highlighting, I would think that it would be more appropriate for us to do it through userjs, however I have yet to find a syntax highlighter that works on mediawiki. The one I have right now requrires code to be in <pre><code>, instead of just <pre> on its own. I don't know if you can either modify the script to not need the code tags, or if the mediawiki css/js pages can be modified to have the code tags in as well. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 09:40, 19 October 2011 (UTC)

Categorization Project

Hey, I've recently gotten interested in helping out this wiki, but so far I've only really done small things, like fixing redirects and such. I've noticed the Categorization project has lain dormant for quite a while, and was wondering if I would have permission to take up the task of implementing the new category tree into the wiki, or if that is too large of a change for someone like me to do. Abuse filter too abusive

The abuse filter could use some seeing to. For starters, I don't think it should infinite block for everything (except the spam filters), it should warn first, then block and keep extending the block every time the same person does the same thing. Secondly, there needs to be a list of valid words, that contain blocked words. For example here, Asterick6 was banned because of the word 'cock' in cocktail, yet cocktail is a completely valid word, which it shouldn't block for.

Hopefully this issue can be resolved, as I can understand how frustrating it can be for users to be blocked because of malfunctioning filters, especially when there's no warning and it's infinite so they can't just wait the block out, they have to find an admin to unblock them. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 10:12, 10 November 2011 (UTC)

Unfortunately, it's really not possible to get it to do things like extend blocks on each additional offense. It has a single block length setting which by default is infinite, and can only be changed in the config files. The only option is really to have it block for nothing, and only disallow actions. If you feel that is a better option, feel free to make that change. Unfortunately, the "bad word" filter works the way it works, that's why there is a warning about using small (three letter words) that may be common components of perfectly valid words. This is part of the price the admin teams pay for having "automatic" spam and behavior control, rather than manually addressing each edit and each offender, they have to monitor the filter actions and reverse any erroneous ones. I guess that's up to you guys to decide. I have very little to do with what filters you guys have implemented other than helping facilitate getting them established to begin with, I would actually take this up with the rest of the admin team. -- Wynthyst User Wynthyst sig icon talk 10:20, 10 November 2011 (UTC)
...and this is where my also being an admin on Wikipedia can come in handy. =D
Wikipedia also uses the AbuseFilter extension (it was, if I'm not mistaken, originally developed for the English Wikipedia), and the admins there have had lots of time to work out most of the kinks in the general filters, meaning instead of struggling with it ourselves, we can just reuse their work. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 16:23, 10 November 2011 (UTC)

Use a zip, not a zip?

I made some modifications on the Enchantments page and I was hoping to attach my calculations so others could check them or convince themselves that I'm not just making them up. Unfortunately when I tried to create a zip file in the wiki it said that I couldn't do that. The page suggested that I try using a zip file instead. I find this misleading. If zip files are not allowed then it shouldn't say that they're permitted. If they are allowed then it should not error out. I tried checking the 'ignore warnings' option and got the same results. Navbox autocollapsing

The reason there was no discussion on that is because that's how it's been since the navbox template was first copied over here from wikipedia last year. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 08:44, 16 December 2011 (UTC)

Well, I don't remember those boxes auto collapsing, and given the fact that causes issues as has been reported on the forum by smartphone users, I think it's best to leave them open. -- Wynthyst User Wynthyst sig icon talk 09:23, 16 December 2011 (UTC)
Autocollapsing was indeed the default with the navboxes since {{Navbox}} was copied from Wikipedia, but the navboxes would only collapse by default if there were (IIRC) two or more "autocollapse" elements on a page. It took an additional edit to make them always collapsed (personally, I don't like that either, BTW). ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 16:55, 16 December 2011 (UTC)
Well, I knew they hadn't always been automatically closed. I don't see any real reason to have them closed. they are on the bottom of the pages, so the argument that they take up too much space just doesn't wash, if someone doesn't want to use them, they have no need to scroll to them. Since users have indicated on the forum that it just doesn't work for smartphone users, I believe keeping them open is for the best. -- Wynthyst User Wynthyst sig icon talk 16:58, 16 December 2011 (UTC)
Well it's easier quicker to scroll to the categories when they're not there, and it prevents a scrollbar on smaller pages, but really I don't even use the navboxes, I also use search, so it doesn't matter to me if they're autocollapsed or not. I was just pointing out that it was the default settings.
Actually, I'm still confused as to how them being open helps smartphone users. They have such small screens that the navbox must make the page massive. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 18:18, 16 December 2011 (UTC)
Since I don't have a smartphone I can't say, I just have to take the word of the people who are asking for them to not be collapsed. -- Wynthyst User Wynthyst sig icon talk 18:20, 16 December 2011 (UTC)

Application for Dutch wiki admin

Hello Wynthyst!

Now that Jeb announced Minecraft in Multi language, I notice that this will help a lot of the Dutch Wiki. There were a few months back a discussion about how to translate some words. This is not a problem anymore because Mojang already translated everything.

The past few months and especially the last few days I am rather busy to prepare the Dutch wiki for a lot of translations. I already remade the language list and started to edit some pages. I noticed that a lot of pages have outdated info or images in the Dutch language. Even the Template:Vertaal... template is used wideout. This requires a lot of unnecessary energy from the server.

I already contacted some of the Dutch admins, but I think they just don't have time anymore, because 2 of them haven't been busy for quite a while now. (Archomeda), (Tomato) etc.

I've got quite a knowledge of wiki editing and am a fast learner. I am Dutch 24 years old male and can communicate in Dutch, English, French and German.

My question is what you probably know. I want to apply for admin for the Dutch wiki. I know you only looking for spanish admins, but I really think that the Dutch need some fresh start. If you want more information, please let me know.

CrazyBliep(talk) 21 dec 2011 01:35 (UTC)

We are happy to have every editor (of any language) take an interest in making our wikis better for everyone. At this point, I'm prepared to monitor your progress. I suggest you work with Quatroking in identifying primary areas that the Dutch wiki needs work (there are many) and see if between the two of you, you can come up with a plan, and implement it. I will discuss your desire for admin rights with him, after the holidays and see if he feels it's appropriate to grant them, based on your level of commitment and the quality of your edits. There should be little that requires admin rights compared to how much can be done without them for now. If you continue to exhibit the same enthusiasm and commitment to making the wiki better that you have started with, I don't see this as being a problem. :D -- Wynthyst User Wynthyst sig icon talk 05:41, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

Forced preview conflicts with abuse filter warning + rant rant rant

The abuse filter warning is supposed to let you still save the edit, after displaying a message to you. However, the forced preview is reset when the warning is displayed, and viewing the preview again resets the warning, causing an infinite loop that ends up with the user not being able to save the edit unless they satisfy the filter's conditions, so it essentially acts as if it is set to block.

Personally, I don't think the forced preview is even at all useful. In the time before I was admin and had to use forced preview, it never caused me to actually preview my edits any more than if it wasn't there. I'd simply press preview, then click save as soon as the button loads up.

Also, the forced preview apparently causes issues with the captcha, but this time the user is in a complete infinite loop, with no way to save the edit other than removing whatever is causing the captcha to come up in the first place. It seems to be causing problems, and isn't really solving any. Sure it means new editors edit a bit slower, but from my experience, it certainly doesn't make them check their edits any more than if it wasn't there.

Obviously, this should be discussed in the community portal, but first I want to make sure there is nothing that can be done to fix it (other than removing it), and if the community agrees that they don't want the forced preview, will you agree to have it removed? –ultradude25 (T|C) at 09:52, 24 December 2011 (UTC)

Of course, I thought it had already been removed..... -- Wynthyst User Wynthyst sig icon talk 15:02, 24 December 2011 (UTC)

I have requested it, but the team is currently starting the process of upgrading to 1.18, so I think it will happen at the same time. Most likely next week. With everyone having been gone for 2 weeks over the holidays, they are playing catch up while getting started on this round of upgrades. Sorry for the delay, and thanks for your patience :D -- Wynthyst User Wynthyst sig icon talk 03:15, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

Stuff stuff stuff

I keep never getting around to asking you things so I'll just do it all in one go. :D

GlobalUsage extension
Did you get a chance to ask the IT team if this was possible to add?

I have asked, and was told it would be looked into... I will ask again.

SVG uploading
It seems SVG uploading has been disabled, not sure when but my only guess would be the mediawiki update. Could we get it back?

I will get it taken care of.

Anon template editing
I don't previously remember anons being able to edit templates, but recently there has been some (vandalising) edits on the templates from them. Has it always been like this or did the mediawiki update break this as well?

They've always had the ability to edit templates. (If it becomes a constant problem, simply semi protect the template).

Numbers of days needed for autoconfirmed?
I noticed that Minecraft Wiki:Autoconfirmed users and MediaWiki:Nocreate-loggedin say different amounts for the number of days needed to become autoconfirmed, so which one is correct?

We changed it, and I don't remember what we changed it to, so I will find out and fix it.

The dreaded vector theme
So I've pretty much finished that minecraft forum like theme, and have been testing it for a few days and so far it's going alright (amazingly, it even works it IE). Now I know you don't like the original (on the plus side, it doesn't push the page down much further than default vector), but I'd still like you to have a look at it and see what you think.

I realise that it is mainly up to the community if they want the theme or not, but will Curse have any problems with it? Updating is a concern, but I could always install the newer version privately before this wiki is updated, and then give you the updated skin to apply once ready.

Also, I have no idea if it's possible, but I think that the stylesheet should be able to turned off in the user preferences. I know some people obviously won't like it, so I'd like them to be able to go back to the standard vector look if they wish. The way the stylesheet is set up right now means the actual function of the option is really simple, it would just remove the <link> element that is including the minecraft.css file. However actually adding it to the preferences page I guess would require an extension, which probably doesn't already exist. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 09:10, 11 January 2012 (UTC)

We can allow users to individually disable the new theme if it is added via a gadget that defaults to active (though this means we'll need to get Extension:Gadgets installed).
While we're on the subject of asking about random tech stuff, is there any timeline for getting the wiki upgraded to 1.18, and is there any chance we could get mw:Extension:Charinsert installed? ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 09:27, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
No, no, and NO to gadgets. (Not only do I hate them, they break all the time.) We decide a single default skin and go with it. If users choose to personalize their view by utilizing their personal css that's their choice (if they don't know how, they are stuck with whatever skin is default). I will weigh in on any submitted skin the same as any other user, so just post screenshots of it, and post them for community opinion. As long as all the functionality remains easily accessible and everything is still readable (no eye bleed color palettes), I personally have no problem with reskinning this wiki, HOWEVER.... it has to be agreed on by EVERY language community, as we (Curse) wish to keep all of the Minecraft Wikis looking the same as much as possible.
I was told today that the 1.18 upgrade is being put on the timeline, but I don't know exactly when yet. I will post a site notice when I find out. Dino, give me a good reason to install Charinsert, and I will see it's taken care of. -- Wynthyst User Wynthyst sig icon talk 09:39, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
Keeping in mind that I've never contributed to a non-Wikimedia wiki that uses the Gadgets extension, I've never noticed significant breakage of any sort of the extension itself (and certainly not constant breakage). Individual gadgets might break when the wiki is upgraded, if some element that they rely on gets a different ID (which doesn't happen often) or the HTML around it is completely changed, but most wikis don't update the software often enough for that to be any real concern, since it's simple enough to fix. If Curse has decided Gadgets won't be getting installed, though, there's not much I can do to change that. ;)
I've been using the skin for a few days, and quite like it myself. You don't have to worry about eye-bleeding color palettes, since otherwise the forum would have them as well, given how closely this skin is based on the forum skin. Community consensus is still necessary, though, I do understand that. =)
CharInsert wouldn't necessarily be very useful here (its main use would probably be allowing one-click insertion of commonly-used snippets of wikimarkup and templates), but on other-language versions of the wiki, it could be used to allow easier insertion of accented and non-Latin characters, for those editors who cannot input such characters from their keyboards for whatever reason (whether their computer isn't configured to allow character input for that language (which itself depends on whether their computer even supports such input modes, and whether they're tech-savvy enough to know that they have to do it and then how to go about it), or (if they use a Windows computer) they don't know about the ALT+number keypresses, etc.). ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 18:27, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
What's the advantage of using charinsert over upgrading to the proper vector edittoolbar, which has a bunch of chars in it by default (and looks heaps nicer)? –ultradude25 (T|C) at 22:53, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
I'm not sure if they fixed it, but we tried using the vector wikieditor, and it created a lot of problems, mostly with losing formatting while copy/pasting, among others. -- Wynthyst User Wynthyst sig icon talk 03:44, 12 January 2012 (UTC)
I haven't noticed anything like that on wikipedia. The wiki editor is going to be included by default in 1.18 (you just need to enable it), so if we are going to use it we may as well wait until then. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 05:42, 12 January 2012 (UTC)
I can't really say, since I've never really used the edittoolbar. If it turns out that does really work (and look) nicer, then it's what we should go with instead. =) ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 23:37, 12 January 2012 (UTC)
I just want to again caution you guys about adding/having things because Wikipedia has them. Not only does Wikipedia have access to pretty much every MediaWiki developer on the planet, they also have a much more extensive support network. There is generally no reason for a small game wiki (we may be huge in traffic, but in reality the wiki itself is well under 1000 pages once you remove all the translation pages) like MCW to have all the fancy bells and whistles, it simply means more opportunities for things to break. So, if you wish to ask for additional extensions, make sure you can give me specific reasons why those extensions would benefit the MCW communities. Not to sound like a hardass, but every extension we add slows down future upgrades because every extension has to be tested on new versions of MW to make sure they still function properly. Keep in mind that the Curse IT team is like 4 people for the wiki stuff, dealing with everything from PHP configs to servers, and they are responsible for everything backend on 40+ wikis. -- Wynthyst User Wynthyst sig icon talk 01:01, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
Well WikiEditor won't be an extension that needs checking in 1.18, and I don't think we'll need charinsert if we have WikiEditor enabled. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 01:31, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
I personally have yet to hear reports of Wikimedia-standard extensions breaking on third-party wikis, as long as the setup isn't too unusual and the versions of everything are kept within range of compatibility - for example, problems with extensions I've installed on another wiki (where I'm more-or-less the only person even approaching full-time technical staff) have all ultimately traced back to weird issues with the MediaWiki installation itself. This isn't some argument against compatibility/breakage testing, of course, and it's hardly a rigorous observation, just a bit of an anecdote. That being said, post-1.18, if an extension ships with vanilla MediaWiki, it's highly unlikely that it has any bugs that could cause breakage when it's used on non-Wikimedia wikis, and if it's an extension that's enabled on Wikimedia wikis, it's been tested far more thoroughly, rigorously, and carefully than other extensions, simply by virtue of the number of people using it. =) ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 20:05, 15 January 2012 (UTC)

Upload protection fail

For some reason, upload protection on redlink image titles doesn't work - for example, on 1, the "Unlock further protect options" checkbox is checked and the "Upload" picker box is set to "Allow all users", and changing the picker box option or unchecking the "Unlock further protect options" checkbox doesn't do anything - on clicking "Confirm" and re-visiting the protect/unprotect page, the settings are back to what they were, and no log entry appears for the protect action. This is a problem, since editors can still upload images to titles that are create-protected but not upload-protected. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 00:45, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

I understand Dino, unfortunately at this point there's not much I can do until the wiki gets upgraded to 1.18. -- Wynthyst User Wynthyst sig icon talk 03:58, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
Not a problem, I just wanted to make sure you know so you can pass it on to the tech team whenever they have the time to look at it. ;) ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 04:35, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

Fixes on french wiki

Could you ask the tech team to fix this, please:

  • Use an icon rather than text for the watch/unwatch link : $wgVectorUseIconWatch=true
  • The abuse-filter is not accessible. The filters are still running and blocking bad edits, but we cannot configure them or access to logs.

Chinese wiki plug-in issue

Hello, first time to speak to you. I am the administrator of Chinese Minecraft Wiki, same as Hzy980512. I believe he has talk to you about the issue of the MediaWiki Extension called the “Loops”, this is still unavailable in the Chinese wiki, and as our new pages keeps being created, this Extension starts to become quite important. So I hope you can add it as soon as possible. Thank you.
P.S. I am currently changing some links that guides to the Chinese wiki in here as they got updated. Some pages need admin permission to edit it. So if you can give me administrator permissions in English wiki it would be appreciated.

It has been requested, (I was given to believe it would be added this week, I guess I was mistaken). -- Wynthyst User Wynthyst sig icon talk 04:15, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
Sorry to bother you again, but there is another issue on the Chinese Wiki. Some time when I try to save my changes or open up a new page, the "Servers temporarily at capacity" eroor page pop up. I am not sure if this problem is cause by our wiki's setting or not. But if you can fix it, it would be great. ---Powup333 19:17, 21 January 2012 (UTC)

Offline copy of this wiki

Hello! I'm from Russia.

My friend love to play minecraft, but he have no Internet access, so I want to help him to have knowledge base. I tried to google some stable solutions of offline minecraft data, but had no success (I got some solutions, but only in English).

Then I used some tools to download ru.minecraftwiki.net and browse local copy. But I always got a problems with encoding or links between pages. Best result is set of pages named like this - Лёд with broken links and some broken images.

Then I installed Apache+MySql, MediaWiki on it and tried to get wiki pages. I exported pages from ru export page and imported to my local wiki. But following this way I can't get images (also I got php errors during importing big amount of pages).

Wikipedia have subdomen with dumps (I can't post this with external link), but minecraftwiki.net doesn't have this page.

I ask you to tell me the way to solve my task, if you know it. I read about full wiki dumps with images, but now I don't know for sure how exactly export and import all data. If I have opportunity to have this dump, I will try to google it. I have some doubts about it, because this site contains ads, so data not totally free in my understanding.

Sorry for long post and my weak English.

Unfortunately, we don't provide full dumps for offline use. The best I can offer you is the solution you are already working on, exporting the pages and importing them. I would suggest exporting only the most recent version, and importing them no more than 20 at a time, and unfortunately, there is no way to export images, you'd have to save each one and then reupload them locally. I wish I could give you a better option for offline use, but that is the best I can do. You would need to make sure you have all the same extensions added to your local wiki as we use http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Special:Version to avoid errors in display -- Wynthyst User Wynthyst sig icon talk 16:32, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
