Sugar is a food item introduced in Beta update 1.2, derived from sugar cane. Sugar is a necessary component in the cake crafting recipe. Since sugar cane is hard to find in some biomes, this makes the cake harder to craft. Sugar cane farming makes it easier to craft the cake. Neither sugar nor sugar cane can be eaten by themselves. Besides crafting, sugar is also used in brewing to make potions with speed effects.

Trivia

  • Sugar seems oddly large from third person or other players view in SMP. It also appears to be held from a different angle than other powder-like items such as Gunpowder and Redstone Dust. This is due to a programming error, which tells the sugar should be wielded as a "tool" in third person. It also, when dropped, can appear in your hand when your inventory is empty, online, in 1.8 .
