Stairs are blocks that allow the player to change elevation without jumping. They are a more compact alternative to steps, allowing a greater elevation change in a shorter horizontal distance.

Crafting

Stairs can be made from six wood or six cobblestone, producing four stairs per craft. Upon destroying the block after placement, it will yield only one of the original material.

Behavior

Stair blocks are directional meaning you can only walk up them from one side. There is currently no way to rotate stairs blocks manually. Instead, they rotate according to the placement of adjacent blocks.

Adjacent Blocks Stairs Face
None South
1 block Toward that block
2 on opposite sides Toward whichever block was placed first
North + East East
South + East East
North + West West
South + West West
On 3 sides Toward the middle block
On all 4 sides Adding 4th block doesn't change the orientation

If another block gets placed above a stair block, the stairs will revert back to one of the original building materials. Water will not revert the block, but flow over it as if it were a completely solid block. If one attempts to be place a torch on top of a stair block, the torch will be placed instead on the closest available non-stair block.

Sometimes, when you attempt to delete stairs, the block behind it gets deleted. Also, stairs are incredibly difficult to delete, even with diamond tools.

Stairs are only available in the alpha version. If a save file containing stairs built with the alpha version is loaded into Infdev, the game will crash.
