The Splash texts are the randomly selected yellow lines of text with often humorous content on the title screen. The splashes are defined in a plain-text file within minecraft.jar (minecraft.jar/title/splashes.txt). The splash pulsates on the title screen at a frequency of 2 Hz.

The number of splashes listed in splashes.txt was increased several times. Beta 1.4 included 223 splashes. In Beta 1.6 and 1.7 the number was increased to 226. One splash, "Check it out!", was listed twice in these versions, on lines 21 and 47. Minecraft Beta 1.8 pre-release 1 removed the duplicate and increased the number of splashes to 260. More splashes were added in Minecraft 1.0 release candidate 1, bringing the total up to 288.

It may be a possible reference to a quote from Wurm Online, wherein Notch states that "we will never add dragons." Dragons were eventually added, however. The same thing happened in Minecraft with the addition of the Enderdragon in 1.9 Pre-release 4. The splash has been updated to "kind of" in Minecraft 1.0 RC 1, since there's only one dragon per world in a special dimension.

Custom Splashes

Players are able to find the splashes.txt file in the minecraft.jar file. This file can be edited to the player's liking, listing only one splash per line. Before replacing the original splashes with user created ones, the META-INF folder needs to be deleted. If the META-INF folder isn't deleted, all splashes will appear as "missingno".
