Unbeknownst to Light, a Detective known only as "L" has also noticed the strange deaths and is already on Lights tail. After publicly voicing his intention to find Kira and bring him to justice, a cat and mouse game begins between Light and L as they both try to stay ahead of the other and uncover their opponents name.
