The Gold Nugget is an item that was first introduced in the 1.9 Pre-release. These are obtained by killing Zombie Pigmen, and can be crafted into Gold ingots, making Gold a renewable ore.

Trivia
- Since Zombie Pigmen carry golden swords with them, it is likely that the gold nuggets are pieces from the destroyed swords since they are not dropped upon death. Only 1/18th of the gold from pigmen's swords are salvaged (assuming 100% drop rate).
- It takes 648 nuggets to get the 8 gold blocks for a golden apple. It takes 41472 nuggets to craft a stack of 64 Golden apples, and it takes 2,239,488 nuggets to fill up an entire large Chest with stacks of 64 of Golden Apples. Consequently, if the United States were to repay their debt in Minecraft gold nuggets instead of dollars, they'd need more than 1,641,589 large chests full of stacks of 64 Golden Apples.
