This article is about the block. For the mob, see Slime.

A slime block is a translucent block that entities can bounce on. It may be used alongside a piston to move several connected blocks at once. Entities move slower on slime blocks.

Obtaining

Breaking

Slime blocks can be broken instantly, regardless of held items.

Usage

Landing on a slime block does not cause fall damage unless the player is sneaking.

Slime blocks are also slightly slippery, but less so than ice.

Slime blocks cause movement on top of them to slow down.

Bouncing

A player or mob that falls onto the top of a slime block bounces to a height proportional to the falling velocity. The bounce height quickly deteriorates. For example, a fall of 255 blocks produces a bounce height of about 50 blocks, while a fall of 50 blocks results in a bounce height of 22 blocks. The maximum bounce height is 57.625 blocks. Entities hitting the side of a slime block do not bounce, unless the slime block is moving using a piston.

A player holding the jump key performs a normal jump on contact with the slime block without taking fall damage. A player holding sneak does not bounce at all and takes fall damage. Landing on the edge of a slime block that is bordered by anything (including air) other than another slime block is treated like landing on a solid block, receiving fall damage and not bouncing.

Placing carpets, rails, trapdoors, redstone repeaters or redstone comparators on a slime block does not stop mobs from bouncing and not taking fall damage. Likewise, placing a pressure plate on a slime block does not stop mobs from bouncing, but the pressure plate still activates. Half-blocks such as Cakes and slabs stop the bouncing effect.

Most mobs bounce off slime blocks. Exceptions are chickens, ghasts and bats. Occasionally a horse may get stuck on a block when a player tries to spawn it on top of a slime block in Creative mode.

Items, falling sand/gravel, minecarts and boats do not bounce on slime blocks. Particles, however, do bounce. Players can also get around the fact that falling blocks, minecarts, and boats don't bounce by having sticky pistons with slime blocks bounce them.

Pistons

A
B
Piston A can extend because the slime block ignores the adjacent obsidian. Piston B cannot extend because the diamond block is prevented from moving by the obsidian and so the slime block also refuses to move.
Dico's fast engine compacted by Xbxp

A self-propelled aircraft engine. Place the top block of redstone and sticky piston last.

When being pushed by a piston, entities (except ender dragons, item frames and paintings) that are ahead are launched into the direction the block is pushed into. When pulled by a piston, no entities are launched.

When a slime block is pushed or pulled by a piston, it attempts to move all adjacent blocks in the same direction. The types of blocks that can be moved are the same as those that can be pulled by a sticky piston. Blocks that cannot be pulled by a sticky piston (i.e. all the blocks listed on the table on the pistons page) stay in place. The blocks that are moved may in turn push other blocks. For example, a slime block sitting on the ground attempts to move the ground block underneath itself, which pushes additional ground blocks in the direction of motion just as if it were being pushed directly by a piston.

Blocks such as Glazed terracotta, honey blocks, and Obsidian are exceptions; they do not move when adjacent slime blocks are moved.

When the adjacent block that is moved is also a slime block, that block attempts to move all its adjacent blocks. For example, a 2×2×2 cube of slime blocks may be pushed or pulled as a unit by a single piston acting on any of the blocks in the cube and attempts to move all blocks adjacent to the cube.

A slime block adjacent to a block that cannot be moved by pistons ignores the immobile block. However, if an adjacent block could be moved but is prevented by the presence of an immobile block, the slime block is also prevented from moving. This includes slime blocks being pulled rather than pushed, in which case the piston retracts without pulling anything. Liquids are an exception: they aren't moved, but neither do they stop a piston from pushing or pulling blocks into their space (usually destroying the liquid, and in a rare case displacing it through the piston).

Slime blocks are not pulled by a non-sticky piston, nor are they moved if an adjacent (non-slime) block is moved by a piston.

The maximum of 12 blocks moved by a piston still applies. For example, a 2×2×3 of slime blocks may be pushed or pulled by a sticky piston as long as no other movable blocks are adjacent to it.

A piston cannot move itself via a "loop" constructed of slime blocks, but self-propelled contraptions can be created with multiple pistons.

A '''head''' or '''skull''' is a [[block]] modeled after the head of a specific [[entity]]. There are seven types of heads: [[player]] ([[Steve]]'s head by default), [[zombie]], [[skeleton]], [[wither skeleton]], [[creeper]], [[piglin]], and [[dragon]].

== Obtaining ==

=== Breaking ===

A mob head can be mined using any item,<ref>{{bug|MC-192905||Heads & Skulls have no assigned tool}}</ref> and drops itself when broken.
{{breaking row|horizontal=1|Mob Head|sprite=Heads}}
If a head is pushed by a [[piston]] or comes in contact with [[water]] or [[lava]], it breaks off as an [[item (entity)|item]].

When destroyed by an [[explosion]], the head ''always'' drops as an item.

===Natural generation===

Dragon heads generate on [[end ships]] found in [[End City|end cities]].

Skeleton skulls can generate in [[ancient cities]], which sometimes generate in the [[deep dark]].

=== Mob loot ===

A [[wither skeleton]] has a 2.5% chance of dropping a wither skeleton skull when killed by a player or a tamed [[wolf]]. The chance is increased by 1% per level of [[Looting]], for a maximum of 5.5% with Looting III. {{IN|bedrock}}, the chance is increased by 2% per level of [[Looting]], for a maximum of 8.5% with Looting III.

[[Skeleton]], [[wither skeleton]], [[zombie]], [[creeper]] and [[piglin]] heads are always dropped by the respective mob if it dies due to a [[charged creeper]]'s explosion. {{IN|bedrock}}, if multiple mobs are killed by the same charged creeper, all of them drop their heads, however {{in|java}} only one mob selected at random drops its head.<ref>{{bug|MC-63534|||WAI}}</ref> If an [[ender dragon]] or a [[player]] is killed by a charged creeper, it does not drop its head.<ref name=":0">{{bug|MC-132933|||WAI}}</ref>

==Usage ==

===Decoration===

Mob heads can be oriented in 16 different directions on top of a block, and 4 directions on the sides of blocks, similar to [[sign]]s. They can be placed on top of, or beside each other by shift clicking.

When placed and powered by redstone, the piglin and dragon heads plays an animation. The piglin head flaps its ears (2 times per second for the right ear and 2.5 times per second for the left ear) while the dragon head opens and closes its mouth repeatedly (2 times per second). The same animation occurs when worn by a (horizontally) moving player, zombie, skeleton, or [[armor stand]] (note: the animation does not play if the <code>NoGravity</code> tag is set to 1)

=== Wearing ===
{{See also|#Renders}}

The player can wear heads, similarly to [[pumpkin]]s or helmets. This overlays the second layer of the player's [[skin]].

====Disguise====

Wearing the corresponding mob head reduces the detection range for [[skeleton]]s (but not [[wither skeleton]]s), [[creeper]]s, [[zombie]]s, and [[piglin]]s to 50% of the normal range. This is similar to (and stacks with) the reductions in detection range from [[sneaking]] and from the [[Invisibility]] status effect.

{{IN|bedrock}}, wearing any mob head or carved pumpkin makes the player invisible to other players on a locator [[map]].

=== Withers===
{{FakeImage|{{BlockGrid|scale=2|w=Wither Skeleton Skull|s=Soul Sand|www|sss| s }}|Wither build configuration}}

[[Wither]]s can be spawned by placing soul sand or soul soil in a T shape, and putting 3 wither skeleton skulls on top of the T. The T can be horizontal or vertical. The last block placed must be one of the three wither skeleton skulls. A dispenser can also create a wither, by placing the final skull onto soul sand directly in front of and below it.

===Dispensers===
A [[dispenser]] can equip a mob head on a player, mob, or armor stand with an empty helmet slot, within the block the dispenser is facing.

[[Dispenser]]s can also complete the construction of a wither.

===Enchantments===

Mob heads can receive the following enchantments, but only through an [[anvil]].

=== Note blocks ===
Placing a head above a [[note block]] causes the note block to play the corresponding mob's {{cd|ambient}} sound when activated. The only exception is the creeper head; as creepers don't make {{cd|ambient}} sounds, the note block plays the {{cd|primed}} (hissing) sound instead.

The block below the note block does not affect the mob sound it creates.

==Player skins==
{{exclusive|java|section=1}}
Human heads have an extra usage for map makers, they can be given [[Chunk format#Entity Format|NBT data]] so that they appear with the skin of any ''Minecraft'' account. This means if a player knows that a specific account has a head that is desired to display, the NBT data can be edited to make it appear.

The command to give the player a head with the skin of another player is {{cmd|give @s minecraft:player_head{SkullOwner:"<''PlayerName''>"} }}. Commonly, this kind of head is called a custom head.

Another command to give the player a head with another player's skin is {{cmd|give @s minecraft:player_head{SkullOwner:{Id:"<''PlayerUUID''>",Properties:{textures:[{Value:"<''SkinURL''>"}]} } } }}. ''SkinURL'' is a string encoded in [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Base64 Base64] containing the URL of the player's skin.<ref>Example: {"textures":{"SKIN":{"url":"<nowiki>http://textures.minecraft.net/texture/292009a4925b58f02c77dadc3ecef07ea4c7472f64e0fdc32ce5522489362680"}}}</ref> A player head saves the skin of the player from the time it was created, meaning if the player changes their skin, the head still displays the original texture.<ref>{{tweet|Dinnerbone|464414369452142592|Skulls are a snapshot of the skin as it was made; just change your skin, make a skull, and change your skin back. That's intended behaviour.|May 8, 2014}}</ref>

Note that it is therefore necessary to be connected to the internet to load the texture of a skin, whatever the property used.
When they are loaded for the first time by the client, the skins textures are cached in {{code|[[.minecraft]]\assets\skins\(subfolders)\(files)}}.
If the client does not have access to the internet when it first loads, the player's head displays a regular head (Steve's skin) which is also cached.
Afterwards, even if the client reconnects to the internet, in order to display the skin correctly, it is necessary to clear the cache manually by deleting the recently created files in {{code|[[.minecraft]]\assets\skins\(subfolder)}}, then restarting the game.

When NBT-customized heads (with names and lores) are placed on the ground, they lose their names and given lores upon picking up. Therefore, using Ctrl + {{ctrl|pick block}} on a custom player head gives the player a head that still retains its textures, but with no lores and its name is reset to either {{code|[PlayerName]'s Head}} (heads obtained by MHF-Marc's Head Format or existing players in the world) or {{code|Player Head}} (heads obtained by using skin URLs).

=== Marc's Head Format===
[[File:Allmobheads.png|thumb|right|Most of the MHF mob heads provided.]]

{{exclusive|Java|section=1}}

[[Marc Watson]] created a number of accounts with specific skins so map makers could use common heads without the risk of someone changing their skins.<ref>{{reddit|1m0itx/twitter_marc_irl_mapmakers_would_it_be_useful|cc4m1cq|I'm here to make it so that people don't have to worry about having a consistent account whose skin might change.|Marc_IRL|September 9, 2013}}</ref> Nowadays, since heads do not update the skin if a player changes their skin, this is not something map-makers need to worry about, though these skins are still useful. These accounts have names in the format <code>MHF_<''Name''></code>, for example <code>MHF_PigZombie</code> is the name of a ''Minecraft'' user with a [[zombified piglin]] head. MHF stands for "Marc's Head Format".<ref>{{tweet|Marc_IRL|377453670410891264|head format. I needed to pick a prefix that was short and not already taken by other usernames.|September 10, 2013}}</ref> There are also a few blocks and "bonus" heads, for more variety. These player heads have not been updated in compliance with the [[Texture Update]], and are outdated.

Because these are names of player accounts, these heads are obtained or placed using the <code>SkullOwner</code> tag, for instance: {{cmd|/give @s minecraft:player_head{SkullOwner:"MHF_''<Name>''"}<nowiki />}}.

The following names/heads have been made available:<ref>{{tweet|Marc_IRL|542330244473311232|For those following the MHF list, I have presents for you. Full list of accounts I've made: http://pastebin.com/5mug6EBu|December 9, 2014}}</ref>

==Issues==

{{issue list}}

== Trivia==
* Despite there being a default Steve head, heads for the other protagonist skins cannot be obtained without using custom names.
*{{IN|be}}, the skull variant for the item is stored under the {{cd|damage}} component, normally used for items with [[durability]].
*The head item's model when wore on a player is slightly larger than its placed block counterpart in the world, which in turn is also slightly larger than the actual player's head. Therefore, a player who wears their own head appears with a larger head.

December 20, 2013Jeb posts the first image of the slime block. At this stage, slime blocks are known as "Bouncy Blocks".
14w02aSlime Block JE1 Added slime blocks.
14w18aSlime blocks can now move adjacent blocks when moved by pistons.
Slime blocks pushed upward by a piston now launch entities vertically into the air.
14w19aSlime blocks can now push entities sideways and downward when attached to a piston.
14w25aThe texture of the inside block originally used the 10×10 center of the 16×16 slime.png file, however, since the addition of explicit texture referencing in block models in this snapshot, the center 10×10 section now has its own texture, due to limitations of the custom models not being able to access non-square texture files. However this change did not affect the actual appearance.
14w32cThe breaking/placing sound of slime blocks has been changed to the hurt sound of slimes.

A '''honey bottle''' is a [[drinks|consumable drink]] [[item]] obtainable by using a [[glass bottle]] on a full [[beehive]]. Honey bottles remove [[poison]] when drunk and can be used to craft [[Honey Block|honey blocks]] and [[sugar]].

== Obtaining ==
{{See also|Tutorials/Honey farming}}

=== Harvesting ===
A honey bottle can be obtained by using a [[glass bottle]] on either a [[beehive]] or [[beehive|bee nest]] with a honey level of 5. Doing this angers any [[bee]]s inside, causing them to attack the player, unless there is a [[campfire]] or another [[block]] on [[fire]] beneath the bee nest or beehive.

A [[dispenser]] with glass bottles can be used to collect the honey without angering the bees. The honey bottle appears as an item in the dispenser's inventory. If the dispenser is full, the honey bottle is shot out.

== Usage ==
To drink a honey bottle, press and hold {{control|use}} while it is selected in the [[hotbar]]. Drinking one restores {{hunger|6}} [[hunger]] and 1.2 hunger [[Hunger#Mechanics|saturation]]. Consuming the item also has the benefit of removing any [[poison]] effect applied to the player. Unlike drinking [[Milk Bucket|milk]], other applied effects are not removed upon drinking a honey bottle.

Honey bottles can be drunk even with a full hunger bar. Drinking a honey bottle takes 25% longer than eating other [[food]] - 2 seconds - and has a unique sound.

=== Trading ===

{{IN|bedrock}}, expert-level cartographer and shepherd villagers both offer to sell one of 16 blank banners for 3 emeralds as part of their trades.

=== Mob loot ===

[[Illager]]s that spawn carrying an ominous banner{{only|java|short=1}} / illager banner{{only|bedrock|education|short=1}} always drop it upon death.

== Usage ==

[[File:Standing banner with block.png|thumb|upright|Overlapping block on a banner.]]
[[File:Wall banner with block.png|thumb|upright|Overlapping on a wall mounted banner.]]

There are 16 colored blank banners, and numerous patterns each available in each of the 16 colors. A banner can feature up to 6 different patterns. The top layer of a banner (or the last pattern added) can be washed off by {{control|using}} it on a [[cauldron]] containing water.

Banners, much like signs, can be placed both on the ground facing in any direction, or on a wall. They gently sway as if affected by a breeze, regardless of dimension or location.

Banners have no collision mask as they are completely non-solid, so [[entities]] can move through them.

Other blocks (including other banners) can be placed on any edge of a banner's hitbox, which is only one block high despite the banner appearing as two blocks tall. This makes it possible to overlap another solid block on the top half of a banner for floor banners, or the bottom half of wall banners.

When a banner is placed on the side of a block, its position is set by the top block, and it is possible to place it so it appears half buried.

Banners can also be placed in [[item frame]]s, where they simply appear as their item model.

[[Water]] and [[lava]] flow around banners. {{IN|bedrock}}, banners can be [[waterlogged]].

<gallery>
File:Wall banner with water below.png| Water can be placed below wall banners
File:Water flowing around banner.png| Water flows around a banner on the ground
</gallery>

Lava can create [[fire]] in air blocks next to banners as if the banners were flammable, but the banners do not burn (and cannot be burned by other methods). Banners also cannot be moved by [[piston]]s.

If a banner is renamed on an [[anvil]], it retains its name when a pattern is added, but not when a pattern is removed.

=== Helmet ===

=== Crafting ingredient ===

[[Shield]]s can have patterns applied to them using banners. The shield pattern has a smaller resolution than the banner pattern, causing them to look different or offset. Banners that have more than six patterns, such as Ominous Banners or banners obtained through inventory editors, will be reduced to six patterns on the shield.

=== Map marker ===
[[File:Banner marked map.png|alt=All banners marked on a map, alongside a named banner.|thumb|right|How every banner appears {{IN|java}} on a map, including named banners.]]

{{exclusive|java|section=13}}
{{IN|java}}, {{control|using}} on a standing banner with a [[map]] selected places a marker of the banner's position on the selected map, and {{control|using}} on the banner again removes the marker. Note that wall banners cannot serve as map markers. The marker has the same color as the banner's base without decorations. The marker is removed if the banner is destroyed unless the map is locked using a [[cartography table]]. If the banner is renamed, the name appears below the marker.

=== Patterns ===
{{see also|Banner/Patterns|title1=List of patterned banners}}
[[File:Spawned-in Banner.png|thumb|100px|Example of a banner with more than 6 patterns, a result of using the {{cmd|give}} command.]]

A banner may have up to six layers of patterns, which are overlaid with the last-crafted on top. A banner can have up to 16 layers of patterns with the use of commands. The total number of unique banners is approximately 2.3x10^16 (or 23 quadrillion).

Any color banner can be used; the pattern overlays the color. {{IN|java}}, a [[loom]] is used to make patterns. However, {{in|bedrock}}, the patterns can be made in a [[loom]] or a [[crafting table]].

A banner can have more than six layers of patterns through the commands <code>/[[Commands/give|give]]</code>, <code>/[[Commands/setblock|setblock]]</code> or <code>/[[Commands/fill|fill]]</code>. This only works in ''Java Edition'', as Bedrock Edition doesn't have any NBT commands. Here is an example of a mining banner with seven different patterns. There is specific codes for the [[Banner#Item data:~:text=white-,Item,-In Java Edition|colors]] and [[Banner/Patterns|patterns]] that you have to input.

<code><nowiki>/give @p white_banner{display:{Name:"\"Mining Industries Banner\""},BlockEntityTag:{Patterns:[{Pattern:"cr",Color:15},{Pattern:"bs",Color:15},{Pattern:"sc",Color:12},{Pattern:"ms",Color:0},{Pattern:"hh",Color:15},{Pattern:"bo",Color:15},{Pattern:"tts",Color:8}]}} 1</code>

=== Renaming ===
{{IN|java}}, a banner can be given a custom name that remains as the banner is placed and retrieved. The player can use an [[anvil]] to rename the banner item, or may change the <code>CustomName</code> tag using the {{cmd|data}} command on the banner block.

=== Fuel ===
Banners can be used as a fuel in [[furnace]]s, smelting 1.5 items per banner.

=== Note Blocks ===
Banners can be placed under [[note block]]s to produce "bass" sounds.

== Trivia ==
* With 16 blank banners, 38 patterns of 16 colors each (608 uniquely-colored patterns), and 0 to 6 patterns per banner, the number of uniquely crafted banners is 16 × (6080 + 6081 + 6082 + 6083 + 6084 + 6085 + 6086) ≈ 809 quadrillion - 809 with 15 zeros (809,573,616,779,945,488). The number of visually distinct banners is smaller, because one or more patterns may completely cover other patterns, or the entire banner, or be duplicated due to the symmetric set of patterns (e.g. field or (yellow) + per pale azure (blue) = field azure + per pale or inverted).
** Not 38 patterns are available on BE, but 40 patterns of 16 colors each (640 uniquely-colored patterns), so the number is even greater. 16 × (6400 + 6401 + 6402 + 6403 + 6404 + 6405 + 6406) ≈ 1 quintillion - 1 with 18 zeros (1,101,232,303,249,827,856). This increases the number by almost 1.4 times, or almost 292 quadrillion, despite the addition of only 2 patterns.
* If a banner has over 6 patterns, only the six bottom-most patterns are displayed when hovered over in the [[inventory]].
* The Mojang logo is called "Thing" in-game, which could be considered an alternate translation for [[wiktionary:mojäng|mojäng]]. If [[wikipedia:Google Translate|Google Translate]] is used, it translates to "thingys" or "contraption".
** In the Swedish translation of the game, this pattern is, in fact, called ''mojäng''.
* [[List of block textures#Banner Textures|Banner textures]] are located in \assets\minecraft\textures\entity\banner.
** There are 40 monochrome textures, each containing all 6 sides of the banner.
** The texture of the back side is the mirrored texture of the front side.
** Compared to the texture files, textures' colors are inverted in-game due to them acting as masks for the re-colored base texture, base.png. That means white is visible, while black is transparent.
* Banners that have the purple NBT+ line in the bottom (obtained by holding Ctrl and middle-clicking the banner, which also copies the NBT [[tag]] of anything that the player points their crosshair to) actually have no difference with the base banner obtained by middle click.
*The Illager Banner in Bedrock Edition is available as a separate item but is just a second variant of the white banner.
**Standard variant of white banner is set to type 0.
**Illager variant is set to type 1.

'''Chains''' are metallic decoration [[block]]s.

== Obtaining ==
=== Breaking ===

Chains can be mined using any [[pickaxe]]. If mined without a pickaxe, it drops nothing.
{{breaking row|Chain|Pickaxe|Wood|horizontal=1}}

=== Natural generation ===
Chains generate in [[bastion remnant]]s and sometimes in [[ruined portal]]s that generate in the Nether. They always generate above [[magma cube]] spawners, also found in [[bastion]]s.

Chains can also generate in [[mineshafts]]. They generate on the sides of a wooden bridge (a mid-air corridor) when the distance between the bridge and the highest solid block below it is higher than the distance to the lowest solid block above it. Chains here generate vertically in a pillar between the bridge and the ceiling. The lowest block of the pillar, connecting the chain to the bridge, is always an [[oak fence]].

=== Chest loot ===
{{LootChestItem|chain}}

=== Crafting ===
{{Crafting
|B1=Iron Nugget
|B2=Iron Ingot
|B3=Iron Nugget
|Output=Chain
|type=Building block
}}

== Usage ==
Chains can be used to suspend [[bell]]s, [[hanging sign]]s, or both types of [[lantern]]s (normal lanterns and soul lanterns), as the chain texture connects to the chain of the lantern seamlessly as if it were part of it, and it connects the hanging sign chains together. Chains do not require a supporting block to be placed whether it is on the top, next to it or at the bottom. It can exist completely free-standing in mid air<ref>{{bug|MC-178791}}</ref> and it can be rotated. Chains connect horizontally or vertically, but not across different orientations (so a chain with N orientation does not connect to a chain with E orientation in the adjacent block).
Horizontal chains one block above a surface may be walked over. Horizontal chains two blocks above a surface prevent players from traveling past them. Vertical chains block travel if targeted directly, but may be skirted.

Precision is required, but chains can be walked on, allowing for inconspicuous, although somewhat costly, bridges.

Chains can be pushed by [[piston]]s without being broken.

A '''carrot''' is a [[food]] [[item]] obtained from carrot crops that can be used to plant them, eaten or used as a crafting ingredient.

'''Carrot crops''' are planted in [[farmland]] and used to grow carrots.

== Obtaining ==

=== Breaking ===
{{See also|Fortune#Seeds}}
Fully grown carrot crops drop 2 to 5 carrots ({{frac|3|5|7}} per crop harvested on average). Yield can be increased using a tool enchanted with [[Fortune]], with Fortune III harvesting an average of {{frac|5|3|7}} carrots.

The yield is calculated by a binomial distribution: 2 drops are fixed, then a drop is attempted three times with a success rate of 57.14286% to yield the extra 0–3 drops. Each level of Fortune enchantment increases the number of attempts by one.

=== Natural generation ===
[[Village]] farm plots have a chance of having carrots. The exact chance depends on the style of the village:

{| class="wikitable"
! Village style !! Chance
|-
| {{EnvSprite|plains-village}} Plains || 30%
|-
| {{EnvSprite|snowy-village}} Snowy || 10%
|}

=== Mob loot ===
[[Zombie]]s, [[husk]]s, and [[zombie villager]]s have a 2.5% ({{frac|1|40}}) chance of dropping either an [[iron ingot]], carrot, or [[potato]] when killed by a player or tamed wolf. This is increased by 1% ({{frac|1|100}}) per level of looting. This gives carrots the following chances of dropping:
* {{frac|1|120}} (about 0.83%)
* {{frac|7|600}} (about 1.17%) with Looting I
* {{frac|9|600}} (about 1.50%) with Looting II
* {{frac|11|600}} (about 1.83%) with Looting III

=== Chest loot ===
{{LootChestItem|carrot}}

== Usage ==
{{see also|Tutorials/Hunger management|title1=Hunger management}}

To eat a carrot, press and hold {{control|use}} while the carrot is selected in the [[hotbar]]. Eating a carrot restores {{hunger|3}} [[hunger]] and 3.6 hunger [[Hunger#Mechanics|saturation]].

=== Farming ===
{{see also|Tutorials/Crop farming|title1 = Crop farming }}

Carrots can be [[farming|farmed]] and harvested on [[farmland]]. Planted carrots take 8 [[Block tick|stages]] to grow, and go through 4 visually distinct stages. Planted carrots require a light level of 9 or greater to continue growing. If the light level is 7 or below, the crops instantly un-plant themselves ("pop off"). It is not possible to plant carrots if the light level is too low.

Crops grow faster if the farmland they are planted in is [[Farmland#Hydration|hydrated]]. Using [[bone meal]] on crops also increases the speed of growth by randomly increasing their growth stage by 2 to 5.

Crops break if pushed by a [[piston]] or if their supporting farmland breaks or turns to dirt (i.e. by being trampled), dropping their usual drops.

If {{cmd|gamerule mobGriefing}} is <code>true</code>, rabbits will find mature carrot [[crops]]{{only|je}} / carrot crops with growth stage greater than 1{{only|be}}. This reduces the growth stages by one, removing the crop completely when the growth stage reaches 0.

=== Breeding ===
Carrots can also be used to [[breed]] and attract [[pig]]s and [[rabbit]]s.

Villagers can pick up carrot items to become willing, which allow them to breed. Villagers require 12 carrots to become willing.

=== Trading ===
Novice-level Farmer villagers have a 25% ({{frac|1|4}}){{only|bedrock}} or 40% ({{frac|2|5}}){{only|java}} chance to buy 22 carrots for an emerald.

=== Crafting ingredient ===
{{crafting usage}}

=== Composting ===
Placing a carrot into a [[composter]] has a 65% chance of raising the compost level by 1.

A '''melon slice'''{{efn|Known as '''Melon Slice''' {{in|java}} and '''Melon''' {{in|bedrock}}.}} is a [[food]] item that can be eaten by the [[player]].

== Obtaining ==

=== Block loot ===

{{see also|Tutorials/Pumpkin and melon farming|title1 = Pumpkin and melon farming}}

Melon slices can be obtained by breaking (harvesting) [[melon]]s using any [[tool]] or by hand. [[Axe]]s, followed by [[sword]]s, are the fastest tools for harvesting melons. A melon drops 3–7 melon slices, when broken; by hand, using a [[tool]], or after being broken by the movement of a [[piston]], with an average of 4.64 slices per melon.

Breaking a melon with a tool enchanted with [[Fortune]] increases the potential number of drops by 1 slice per level, up to a maximum of 9 slices.

== Usage ==

=== Food ===
{{see also|Tutorials/Hunger management|title1=Hunger management}}

To eat a melon slice, press and hold {{control|use}} while it is selected in the hotbar. Eating one restores {{hunger|2}} [[hunger]] and 1.2 hunger

An '''item frame''' is an [[entity]]{{only|java|short=y}} or [[block entity]]{{only|bedrock|short=y}} that displays the item or block that is inside it.

A '''glow item frame''' keeps itself and the item inside it illuminated, even in the dark.

== Obtaining ==

=== Breaking ===

{{IN|je}}, an empty item frame can be broken simply by punching it. If the item frame contains an item, punching it drops the item, leaving the frame on the wall.

Because item frames are [[entities]] {{in|java}}, they can be broken in [[Adventure]] mode. They will also be targeted by commands using the @e selector.{{only|java}}

=== Trading ===
Expert-level [[Trading#Cartographer|cartographer]] [[villager]]s have a chance to sell an item frame for 7 [[emerald]]s.

== Usage ==

=== Item display ===

[[File:Item Frame (map filled partial).png|thumb|150px|Item frame with partially filled map]]
Item frames can be placed on the sides of [[cactus]] blocks, [[pressure plate]]s, [[fence]]s, [[tree]]s, [[slab]]s, [[cobblestone wall]]s, [[chest]]s, [[door]]s, and all [[solid block]]s. They can also be placed on the top and bottom of these blocks. To place on chests and doors, the player needs to be [[sneaking]]. As item frames are an entity, multiple item frames can occupy the same block, although on different faces. It also allows non-solid blocks to occupy the same space.{{only|java}}

Players can place items in the frame by {{control|using}} the item. If a [[map]] is placed in an item frame, it enlarges to show the map in the size of a full block, with the item frame's location displayed as a green pointer on the map, pointing in the direction the item frame is facing. If this is done in the Nether, the green cursor spins around similar to the white cursor (players). If an item in an item frame has been renamed using an [[anvil]], it displays its custom name when the cursor is over the item frame. If the player places a block inside the frame, it is displayed in miniature half in, half out of the block. This can be most notably seen on stairs or slabs.

{{control|Pick block}} may be used on item frames by players in creative mode only, the control has no effect for players in Survival or Adventure mode. When the item frame is displaying an item, {{control|pick block}} picks the displayed item instead of the item frame.

Item frames can be placed on the lid of a [[shulker box]] that is positioned horizontally, but pop off when the lid is opened.{{only|java}}

=== Rotation ===
The displayed item can then be rotated by right-clicking the frame. Items displayed in the item frame can turn 45° diagonally, with a total of 8 possibilities (90° and 4 possibilities if it is a map), and the frame outputs a [[Mechanics/Redstone/Circuit#Power level|redstone signal]] depending on the rotation phase that can be interpreted by a [[redstone comparator]] (note that this rotation value is separate from the clock or compass rotation). As long as the frame remains placed, it remembers the orientation of the last item it held, and uses it for the next item it holds.{{only|java}}

=== Glow item frames ===
[[File:Item Frames Comparison.png|thumb|260px|Comparison between ordinary item frame and glow item frame in the dark.]]

When an item is placed inside a glow item frame, it appears to glow, even though it does not emit any [[light level]].

== Sounds ==
Item frames and glow item frames share the same sounds.

== Trivia==

*The item frame is based upon a suggestion on [[wikipedia:Reddit|Reddit]], like the [[ender chest]] and [[flower pot]].<ref>{{Tweet|dinnerbone|235747041286975488}}</ref>
*The item frame is the only entity to reference a block [[model]].{{only|java|short=1}} Because of this, the texture of the frame border is the same as the birch planks texture.
*Item frame is the '''only''' placeable item that can interfere with other non-full block entities.
*Due to the way layer textures are displayed in Minecraft, maps float on item frames, similar to how icons float on the map itself.

*[[wikipedia:Nautilus|Nautilus]]es are animals that occupy deep oceans in the real world. However, they are absent in Minecraft and there are currently no plans to add nautilus [[mob]]s into the game.
*Because {{el|bedrock}} allows for Nautilus shells to be held in the off-hand (since drowned hold them), they are the only item in that version that can be put in the off-hand slot without having a specific function.

An '''ink sac''' is an [[item]] dropped by a [[squid]] upon death used to create [[black dye]], [[dark prismarine]]{{only|BE|short=1}}, and [[Book and Quill|books and quills]].

== Obtaining ==

=== Mob loot ===

==== Squid ====
{{see also|Tutorials/Squid farming|title1=Squid farming}}

A [[squid]] drops one to three ink sacs upon death. The maximum amount is increased by 1 per level of [[Looting]], for a maximum of 1 to 6 with Looting III.

=== Fishing ===
Ink sacs can be obtained as a "junk" item from [[fishing]]. The [[Luck of the Sea]] [[enchantment]] decreases the chance.

=== Trading ===
[[Wandering trader]]s sometimes sell 3 ink sacs for an [[emerald]] {{in|bedrock}}. Apprentice level [[Trading#Librarian|librarians]] also buy 5 ink sacs for one [[emerald]].

'''Kelp''' is an underwater plant that generates in most [[ocean]]s.

== Obtaining ==

=== Natural generation ===

Kelp naturally generates in any [[ocean]] [[biome]]s (except in [[Frozen Ocean|frozen]], [[Deep Frozen Ocean|deep frozen]] and [[Warm Ocean|warm]]), near and around [[seagrass]]. Each chunk has {{frac|1|18}} chance to generate a [[vegetation]] of kelp.

=== Breaking ===

Kelp can be mined instantly with any [[tool]] or with the player's fist. Removing water from the kelp block destroys the kelp. Breaking one part of a kelp stalk destroys all kelp [[block]]s above it. Each block drops a kelp [[item (entity)|item]].

=== Trading ===

Kelp can be bought from [[wandering trader]]s for 3 emeralds.

== Usage ==

Kelp can be placed underwater by hand, or anywhere by the use of [[commands]] such as {{cmd|setblock}}. Placing it by hand gives it a random {{code|age}} value between 0 and 24. Kelp can be placed only in [[water]] source blocks or downward-flowing water, not horizontally flowing water.

When placed in downward-flowing water, the flowing water transforms into a water source block,<ref>{{bug|MC-134229}}</ref> which is useful for faster [[bubble column]] elevator creation.

Any building block can be placed on top of a kelp plant, which is useful for building structures over a deep ocean without needing to build from the ocean floor (see also [[lily pad]]).

=== Cooking ingredient ===

{{smelting
| showname = 1
| Kelp
| Dried Kelp
| 0.1
}}

=== Composting ===

Placing kelp into a [[composter]] has a 30% chance of raising the compost level by 1.

=== Growth mechanics ===

Kelp can be planted on a broad variety of blocks. It grows underwater if it has either a source block of water or, {{in|Java}}, flowing water above it.<ref>{{bug|MC-133354}}</ref> Neither [[player]]s nor [[dispenser]]s can remove the water source block that kelp grows in without breaking the kelp first.

Kelp does not require any [[light]] level to grow. Kelp also grows without having [[sky]] access. [[Bone meal]] can be used to grow kelp by 1 block on each use.

Kelp, when planted, is generated with a randomly chosen age value, which can be checked when pressing [[Debug screen|<kbd>F3</kbd>]]{{only|java}}. The age value of a newly planted kelp plant varies randomly from 0 to 24. Each time the kelp grows in height by one block, the newly generated top of the kelp plant increases its age by 1. When the top block of the kelp plant reaches an age of 25, it stops growing. This means that kelp can naturally grow to a height between 2 (if the first kelp plant had an age of 24) and 26 blocks (if the first kelp plant had an age of 0).

When a kelp plant block is broken, the age of the kelp plant block underneath is randomized to a value from 0 to 24 and the kelp continues growing until it reaches age 25. It is possible to use this mechanic to cultivate a kelp plant to increase its growth height beyond its natural maximum height of 26 blocks. This can be done by breaking the top-most block of the kelp plant each time it reaches age 25. A kelp plant cultivated by a player in this way repeatedly grows until it reaches the water surface.

Each time it receives a [[random tick]], kelp has a 14% chance of growing.

If [[shears]] are used on the topmost block of kelp, that block automatically sets its {{cd|age}} value to {{cd|25}} and stop growing.{{only|JE}}

=== Farming ===
{{Main|Tutorials/Kelp farming}}
Kelp farming is similar to farming [[sugar cane]], although kelp must be placed underwater. Automation of harvest is easier because items float up in water.

== Trivia ==
* In real life, [[wikipedia:kelp|kelp]] is not considered a [[wikipedia:plant|plant]]. It is classified by scientists as a [[wikipedia:Brown algae|brown algae]].
** Kelp in real life absorbs nutrients directly from the water, instead of through its root-like structure, [[wikipedia:Holdfast (biology)|holdfast]], which merely attaches it to the seabed. This is in accordance with kelp being able to grow on almost any solid block in ''Minecraft''.

Issues

Issues relating to "Slime Block" are maintained on the bug tracker. Report issues there.

Trivia

  • A minecart leaving a rail onto a slime block can continue on a rail on the opposite side if it has sufficient momentum leaving the initial rail.
  • Slime blocks under soul sand make the player move slower than if the player was just walking on soul sand. This is also apparent with ice.
  • Rabbits do not jump while on a slime block.
  • Entities launched upward by a slime block on top of a piston achieve slightly more than 6.4 blocks of lift, including the lift from the piston. Entities launched sideways across normal blocks or air are moved 3.510 blocks in the direction of the launch.
  • While falling, placing a slime block while just before impact prevents all fall damage.
  • Slime blocks are invisible if seen from the clouds.
  • Players walking on slime blocks move at 1.359 m/s, a speed reduction of around 70% from the normal walking speed.
