Seagrass is a non-solid plant block that generates in all oceans, except frozen oceans.
Obtaining
Seagrass can be destroyed instantly with any tool, item or the player’s fist. It can only be obtained using shears or it will drop nothing. Regular seagrass drops 1 seagrass when harvested with shears and tall seagrass drops 2 seagrass when harvested with shears.
Turtles
Turtles will drop 0–2 seagrass when killed. The Looting enchantment will increase the maximum number of possible seagrass drops by 1 per level.
Natural generation
Seagrass generates in either its tall or small form in ocean biomes near kelp, and will also generate in rivers, underwater caves and swamps by itself, replacing ice[1] and planks[2] as necessary.
Bone meal
Using bone meal underwater will generate seagrass. The bone meal must be used on a non-transparent block under at least 2 blocks of water, with the water directly above the block being non-flowing. If these conditions are met, seagrass will generate on that block, and if available, also on surrounding blocks.
Usage
The seagrass item can only be placed on non-transparent blocks.
Like grass, snow layers and other such blocks, placing blocks inside seagrass will delete it. However, it will block coral fan placement.[Bedrock Edition only][3]
Breeding
Seagrass can be used to breed turtles.
Bone meal
Applying bone meal to a regular seagrass will turn it into tall seagrass, assuming there is enough space. It can also be used to completely waste bone meal if no such space exists.[4].
Composting
Placing seagrass into a composter has a 30% chance of raising the compost level by 1.[upcoming: JE 1.14 & BE 1.11.0]
