Ruined portals are naturally generated damaged nether portals, which spawn in both the Nether and the Overworld.

Generation

Ruined Portal underside in water

Underside of the ruined portals

Ruined portals generate in all biomes in both the Nether and the Overworld. They can spawn underground, underwater, or exposed to the air. Natural terrain around ruined portals will generate as netherrack.

Structure

Ruined portals generate incomplete portal frames composed of both obsidian and crying obsidian, despite the latter not being a valid portal material.[1] Some frames generate flat on the ground, as if they toppled over.

Ruined portals generate with a chest, which contain various materials related to nether portals as various golden items.

If a ruinded portal generates in the Overworld it will be surrounded with structures made of stone, stone bricks and iron bars; if in the Nether it will be surrounded by blackstone variants and chain.

If a ruined portal generates underwater, it may create downward bubble columns with nearby magma blocks.

Currently there are 13 variants. 10 normal size portals and 3 giant portals in varying states of decay.

Ruined portals can be generated by the player by loading ruined_portal/portal_<1 to 10> or ruined_portal/giant_portal_<1 to 3> with a structure block

Usage
When used on a mob, a fence, or a wall, balloons attach to the mob or block, similarly to a lead. Balloons float into the air faster than the speed the player flies up, but remain grounded if tied to a fence. If tied to a mob, the balloon floats away and carries the mob into the air, before both eventually despawn or disappear.

When a balloon is shot by an arrow or a trident, or floats into a solid block, it pops, summons particles, and is destroyed. It drops nothing. A balloon tied to a fence post bursts when a player strikes it in any direction.

A recovery compass is an item used to point to the location of the player's last death.

Obtaining
Crafting
Usage
When held by a player, the recovery compass will point towards the spot where they previously died.

The recovery compass will only work when it is held by a player who has previously died and is in the same dimension as their last death. Otherwise, it will spin around randomly.

Like other items, the recovery compass itself will still drop when a player dies and the <code>keepInventory</code> game rule is not enabled.

This item is useless on Hardcore mode, as once the player dies, the player cannot respawn.

Enchantments
A recovery compass can receive the following enchantments:
