This article is about the enchantment that provides the ability to breathe underwater. For the status effect, see Water Breathing.

Respiration is a helmet enchantment for extending breathing time underwater. It can be applied to other armor pieces using commands.

Usage

Respiration extends underwater breathing time by +15 seconds per enchantment level in addition to the default time of 15 seconds. It also grants a chance of not taking drowning damage each second by level / (level + 1). The maximum level that can be obtained without commands is level 3, resulting in a total time of 60 seconds underwater (including the base time without enchantments) before drowning begins. Wearing a turtle shell extends this time by an additional 10 seconds.

As such, the longest you could last underwater without any potions would be using a turtle shell, enchanted with respiration III. This allows you to stay underwater for 70 seconds before taking damage. Additionally, due to the lowered chance of taking drowning damage, you could last an extra 30 seconds, on average, before you died (assuming that you started on 20♥ × 10 health, and did not heal).

With commands, it is possible to go above respiration III. With respiration 32, you can last 495 seconds (8 minutes and 15 seconds) before taking damage. Then, due to reduced chance of taking damage, you would last an average of 330 seconds (5 minutes and 30 seconds) before dying (assuming that you started on 20♥ × 10 health, and did not heal). This means that, from start to finish, a player wearing a respiration 32 helmet will last a total of 825 seconds (13 minutes and 45 seconds) on average before dying of drowning.
