Redstone ore is the form that Redstone takes when generated in a Beta map. The block was added on Alpha version 1.0.1 (Seecret Friday update 3) on July 3, 2010.
Redstone ore drops 4 - 6 piles of Redstone dust when mined with a Iron Pickaxe or better. Redstone ore forms in veins made up of 1 - 14 blocks. This makes it relatively easy to obtain large amounts of Redstone.
If a player left or right clicks on, or an Entity moves or falls on Redstone ore, the block will emit level 9 light for 3 seconds.
Redstone ore veins form at elevations from 1 to 19 meters above the bottom of the map. Below elevation 18, it occurs in about 0.7% of the Stone layer in a map.

Trivia
- Though it is called an "ore" it is not a metal and cannot be smelted into a pure substance.
- When added to the game, all Redstone related blocks had no official name. In 1.0.4, July 9, 2010, the name Redstone was given by Notch after demands from the community.
- Redstone ore is the hardest ore to mine (4.5 seconds with iron pickaxe), but Obsidian is the hardest block to mine (with diamond pickaxe).
