A room showing Redstone torches, Redstone ore, Redstone wire, a Redstone Repeater, Redstone dust (held), and a Pressure Plate connected to two Iron doors to create a Redstone circuit.
Redstone is an object most commonly found deep underground in the form of Redstone ore that was introduced in Minecraft Alpha 1.0.1. When Redstone ore is destroyed by a Pickaxe made of Iron or Diamond, it drops 4-5 piles of Redstone Dust. This dust can then be placed on the ground to make a wire (or be crafted with a stick to make a Redstone torch.) Shortly before Notch gave it its official name, it was known by a variety of names. The most popular unofficial name was Cuprite, as well as the troll-coined Aspergite. The name and properties of redstone may be a reference to a mythological substance, a Philosopher's stone, which was told to be colored red.
Redstone could refer to:
- Redstone Ore - Redstone ore found deep underground.
- Redstone Dust - Redstone dust, obtained from the ore, that can be placed as wire or used for crafting.
- Redstone Wire - Redstone wire is redstone dust that has been placed on the ground. It can create connected, logical circuits.
- Redstone Torch - Redstone torches generates current and are often used to make redstone power go further. It thus a major component in redstone circuits.
- Redstone Repeater - Redstone repeaters are often used to make redstone power go further. It also helps making redstone circuits more compact.
