Wooden Planks is a block that is crafted by the player from wood. It appears as a series of interconnected planks. Wooden planks have a variety of crafting and structural uses, and are a renewable resource. Wood is easy to obtain in any biome where trees can be found.
Occurrence
Oak wooden planks can be found in Abandoned Mine Shafts where they form beams supported by wooden fence posts. They also appear in NPC villages where they form various structures including walls, roofs, and floors of many buildings, and in some rooms of strongholds (mainly libraries). Spurce wooden planks can be found in Swamp biomes forming Witch huts, the only place in the game where Witches can spawn.
Building
A shack made of wooden planks.
The value of building with wooden planks is disputed. Structures built of planks can be burned down easily, either by accident or by griefers. It is often used, regardless of the dangers, due to its abundance in trees and its aesthetically pleasing appearance. As of 12w17a, wooden slabs burn.
Crafting
All variations of Wooden Plank, with each wood type crafting into the planks below it. Their saplings are also visible.

When crafted from Wood, Wooden Planks are colored according to the wood they came from, as seen on the right. Wooden planks prior to 1.2.4 all had the same color regardless of the tree type the wood came from. Wooden planks of different colors do not stack.
As a crafting ingredient
Wooden planks (of any color) are used in many crafting recipes: wooden axes, pickaxes, swords, shovels, and hoes; buttons, trapdoors, pressure plates, crafting tables, chests, bowls, signs, doors, boats, sticks, stairs, Fence Gates, jukeboxes, bookshelves, Note Blocks, beds, slabs, and Pistons.
Stairs and slabs have a special feature: all planks used in one crafting must be of the same type, but the resulting items will keep the type name (and color) of the wood used; e.g., "Oak Wood Stairs", or "Jungle Wood Slabs". For all other items, planks of different types can be mixed freely, with no effect on the result.

Fuel
Planks can fuel a furnace, burning for 15 seconds apiece, smelting 1½ items. Thus a log's worth of planks smelts 6 items, making them the second most efficient wood-derived fuel (after charcoal, which smelts 8 items per log). They are therefore the best fuel for creating your first charcoal when no coal is available. They are also more efficient for smelting 4 or fewer items, since each wood block produces 4 planks which can be used individually whereas the rest of the charcoal would be wasted.
History
Wooden planks originally looked more like a brick block File:OldWood.PNG when they were first introduced into the game. In Survival Test, Wooden Planks were obtained by destroying a Wood block, but this was later changed so that destroying a Wood block obtains the block, which can later be crafted into planks.
In Beta 1.9pre5, the texture of Wooden Planks changed.
In 1.2.4, three new colors of Wooden Planks were added corresponding to and crafted from the four types of Wood; previously, there was only the medium shade which is now obtained from oak wood.
As of 12w25a, Stairs and Slabs have been updated with new colors that correspond with the type of Wooden Plank they're crafted with.
As of 1.3.1, Wooden Planks, Slabs, and Stairs are currently named corresponding to the type of wood they are crafted from (e.g. Wooden Planks crafted from Birch Wood are called Birch Wood Planks).
Trivia
- Wooden planks always face north/south.
- Although new wood plank colors were added in 1.2.4, items crafted from them would all have the "default" color. The planks received from a broken boat would be the "default" color regardless of which type was used to craft the boat, this gives players a way to convert one type to the default color but at a loss; 5 planks convert to 3 planks and 2 sticks.
- However, if you have planks in a large amount, stacks of each type, this really doesn't come as a problem anymore.
- In Minecraft Pocket Edition Lite, it is possible to find a short corridor underground with a block of oak wooden planks at the end. This happens most commonly in deserts, but is still a rare find.
