Wooden Planks is a block that is crafted by the player from wood. It appears as a series of interconnected planks. Wooden planks have a variety of crafting and structural uses, and are a renewable resource. Wood is easy to obtain in any biome where trees can be found.

Occurrence

Wooden planks can be found in Abandoned Mine Shafts where they form beams supported by wooden fence posts. They also appear in NPC villages where they form various structures including walls, roofs, and floors of many buildings. Wooden planks can also be found in some rooms of strongholds; in libraries, for example. Only Oak Wood Planks are found naturally in the world.

Building

The value of building with wooden planks is disputed. Structures built of planks can be burned down easily, either by accident or by griefers. It is often used, regardless of the dangers, due to its abundance in trees and its aesthetically pleasing appearance. Some players use wooden slabs, which have the same physical properties as stone, instead of wooden planks to avoid the drawbacks of building with wood. As of 12w17a, wooden slabs burn.

When crafted from Wood, Wooden Planks are colored according to the wood they came from, as seen on the right. Wood products other than Wooden Planks only have one color. Wooden planks prior to 1.2.4 all had the same color regardless of the tree type the wood came from. While wooden planks of different colors do not stack, crafting recipes in which they are consumed will take any combination of colors at once.

Uses

Wooden planks (of any color) are used in many crafting recipes: wooden axe, pickaxe, sword, shovel, and hoe; pressure plate, crafting table, chest, bowl, sign, door, boat, stick, stairs, Fence Gates, jukebox, bookshelf, Note Block, bed, slab, and Pistons.

Fuel

Planks can fuel a furnace to burn for 15 seconds, which can smelt 1 1/2 items.

Planks are the second most efficient wood-derived fuel after charcoal (smelts 8 items), and therefore the best choice for creating the first charcoal if no coal is available. They are also more efficient for smelting 4 or fewer items, since each wood block produces 4 planks which can be used individually whereas the rest of the charcoal would be wasted.

History

Wooden planks originally looked more like a brick block File:OldWood.PNG when they were first introduced into the game. In Survival Test, Wooden Planks were obtained by destroying a Wood block, but this was later changed so that destroying a Wood block obtains the block, which can later be crafted into planks.

In Beta 1.9pre5, the texture of Wooden Planks changed.

In 1.2.4, three new colors of Wooden Planks were added corresponding to and crafted from the four types of Wood; previously, there was only the medium shade which is now obtained from oak wood and matches other wooden items such as stairs.

Trivia

  • Wooden planks always face north/south.
  • Although new wood plank colors were added in 1.2.4, items crafted from them would all have the "default" color. The planks received from a broken boat would be the "default" color regardless of which type was used to craft the boat, this gives players a way to convert one type to the default color but at a loss; 5 planks convert to 3 planks and 2 sticks.
  • However, if you have planks in a large amount, stacks of each type, this really doesn't come as a problem anymore.
