This article is about the vanilla piston. For the mod, see mods/Pistons.

Pistons are blocks capable of pushing or pulling adjacent blocks, depending on the direction they face. The original version of this feature was a mod posted on the Minecraft Forums by Hippoplatimus.[1] Pistons were added in version 1.7, as well as Sticky Pistons. Sticky Pistons added a use for Slimeballs. Pistons are slightly altered from the original version[2] for now they will be called pistons, but eventually they may not.[3]. One known difference from the mod's usage is that Pistons will not launch the player and other entities in the air.
Pistons can't move Blocks like Chests, Noteblocks and other Blocks of that kind as proven in the video[4].
[5] Another difference is that moving blocks will be stored as tile entities instead of entities;[6][7] this might make it possible to stand on moving pistons and blocks without falling through.

Bugs

  • When Sand/Gravel are pushed over a hole in the ground and fast pulled back again (or pushed away with another piston), the hole fills up with another Sand/Gravel, allowing to infinitly produce Glass and Flints.
  • Pushing a rose with a Piston with cause the game to crash with a "saving chunks" screen. It may also break your world.
