Piglin brutes are hostile mobs found in all types of bastion remnants.
Spawning
Piglin brutes spawn in bastion remnants only upon generation, from four to 20 piglin brutes spawning per bastion remnant.[verify] Piglin brutes do not have a baby variant and do not respawn once killed.
Piglin brutes spawn holding a golden axe which may be enchanted. They do not spawn with armor and never equip armor from the ground.
Drops
- A golden axe, which has a 15.5% chance of dropping.[check the code]
- It has random durability.
- 20–23[JE only]/10[BE only] experience points are dropped upon death if killed by a player or tamed wolf.
Behavior
Piglin brutes attack players, wither skeletons, and withers within 16 blocks and are not distracted by golden items or blocks. In Peaceful difficulty in Bedrock Edition, piglin brutes do not attack the player, but still attack wolves, snow golems, and iron golems when provoked by them. They despawn in Peaceful difficulty in Java Edition.
Behaviors which both piglins and piglin brutes have:
- Open wooden doors.
- Detect players through walls when they open containers (such as chests) or break gold-type blocks.
- Become hostile to these players, aggravating nearby piglins and other piglin brutes.
Both piglins and piglin brutes are not naturally immune to fire or lava.
Behaviors which differ from piglins:
- Piglin brutes do not retreat from soul fire related items nor from zoglins or zombified piglins.
- Piglin brutes do not hunt adult hoglins.
- Piglin brutes do not do a "victory dance."
- Piglin brutes do not pick up any items off the ground, except for normal or enchanted golden axes. They only obtain that tool if they walk across it.
Piglin brutes will attack players even if they wear golden armor. Nearby piglins and other piglin brutes become aggravated if a player attacks a piglin brute, no matter whether the player wears golden armor or not.
Despite being living mobs, piglin brutes sink in water. This is intentional behavior.[1]
Zombification
A piglin brute turning into a zombified piglin.
When in the Overworld or the End, piglin brutes transform into zombified piglins after 15 seconds. Upon transformation, the spawned zombified piglin has the Nausea effect for 10 seconds. This Nausea effect is purely cosmetic and has no impact on the behavior. In Java Edition, they keep their axes when turned into a zombified piglin.

Trivia
- Piglin brutes were created late in 1.16's development, so they were pushed to a minor release as the developers did not want to add a new feature so close to release.[2]
- The golden arm guard is meant to work as a "protection" and is the reason behind their high health.[3]
