Piglins are neutral mobs that inhabit some Nether biomes. They are equiped with crossbows or golden swords. They are hostile towards players not wearing golden armor, and neutral towards players wearing golden armor.

Spawning

Piglins spawn in groups of 1–3 in crimson forest and nether wastes biomes. Each piglin has a 25% chance of being a baby. Piglins can occasionally spawn wearing golden armor.

Behavior

Adult piglins are naturally hostile to the player, unless the player wears gold armor. They also always attack wither skeletons and sometimes adult hoglins. They will avoid nearby zombie pigmen and soul fire.

When attacking, an adult piglin with a crossbow will shoot arrows every 2 seconds, and walk backwards (stopping if at the edge of a drop) as soon as the enemy is close. Unlike bow-armed mobs, they will not strafe from left to right while doing this. Piglins with swords just rush at a player.

Baby piglins are not armed, but they may pick up some items instead.

Even if the player wears gold armor, piglins will become aggravated towards the player if they open any chest, trapped chest, barrel, shulker box or ender chest near the piglin, regardless of the contents.

Piglins will willingly downgrade to golden armor if they are wearing higher tier armor, or armor that has higher durability than gold, such as iron, chainmail, diamond, and netherite armor.

When in the Overworld, piglins will transform into zombie pigmen after about 20 seconds. When they transform, they will lose all their armor and held items and will be given a golden sword. Upon transformation, the newly spawned zombie pigman will have the Nausea effect for about 10 seconds.

Piglins are capable of opening doors.

Piglins cannot swim in water, and will drown. However, the conversion to Zombified Piglin always takes place before drowning can begin.

Bartering

Main article: Bartering
Not to be confused with Trading.
Minecraft Bartering Guide for Java Edition 1.16.2 to 1.18

A reference table of Piglin Bartering as of 1.16.2 and above. Bartered items may differ in Bedrock Edition.

Bartering is an action the player can perform with piglins to obtain various items.

Mechanics

<onlyinclude>To barter with a piglin, either throw by dropping a gold ingot near an adult piglin or use a gold ingot on it. After the piglin takes the gold ingot and examines it for six seconds in Java Edition or eight seconds in Bedrock Edition[1], it tosses a random item to the player. Piglin brutes ignore gold ingots. Baby piglins take the ingot without giving anything in return, instead holding the ingot, which is dropped when killed.

Piglins pick up many other items that are made of gold; however, ingots are the only items that piglins accept for bartering. Baby piglins are incapable of bartering and treat gold ingots like any other gold items.

Hitting a piglin causes it to "confiscate" the ingot; the piglin does not complete the barter. It cannot be bartered with again unless it puts another item in its inventory. Piglins who are killed in one hit before they finish examining always drop the ingot.

When a piglin is admiring a gold ingot, it can still be angered by the player breaking a container or a gold-related block nearby, although its behavior differs depending on the game edition. In Java Edition, the piglin finishes the barter on the original schedule, and only starts attacking the player once the barter finishes. In Bedrock Edition, the piglin immediately finishes the barter and starts attacking the player,[2] leading to a bartering transaction much shorter than the default 8 seconds.[3] This allows piglins in Bedrock Edition to barter rapidly when gold-related blocks are repeatedly broken nearby, or when a gold-related block is repeatedly pushed and pulled by pistons.

Piglin Admiring Item

Bartering is controlled by the loot table minecraft:gameplay/piglin_bartering. If the game rule mobGriefing is false, piglins only barter when the player uses a gold ingot on them.

If a piglin is zombified into a zombified piglin before the bartering is complete, the newly-zombified piglin drops the gold ingot.

The player can only barter with piglins, not piglin brutes or zombified piglins, even if the zombified piglin was a piglin that was zombified in the Overworld or the End.

When a piglin is admiring a gold ingot while bartering, it does not run away from nearby zoglins or nearby zombified piglins.

Trivia

  • Piglins sometimes pick up and equip the iron boots enchanted with Soul Speed that they have just offered while bartering. A player wanting to obtain the iron boots without killing the piglin can induce the piglin to discard the iron boots by offering a pair of golden boots.

Picking up items

Any piglin can pick up and equip any gold related item, regardless of their ability to pick up other items. While doing so, Piglins will "contemplate" at the specific item by looking at it for a mere moment. Piglins that currently have crossbows can trade those out in order to hold any other gold related item instead (apart from ingots, which are consumed in bartering), even if it is not actually a weapon, and drop their crossbow on the floor.

Piglins have eight hidden inventory slots[needs testing], which start empty whenever the piglin is spawned. Like villagers, piglins do not intentionally seek out items to pick up, but they do collect raw porkchop within range. This is the only item they can pick up, although the player may use the /replaceitem command to put an arbitrary item into a piglin's inventory.

Drops

When killed, piglins drop:

  • 8.5% chance to drop their golden sword if killed by a player or tamed wolf. The chance is increased by 1% per level of Looting, for a maximum of 11.5% with Looting III.[verify]
  • 8.5% chance to drop their crossbow if killed by a player or tamed wolf. The chance is increased by 1% per level of Looting, for a maximum of 11.5% with Looting III.[verify]
  • 5 experience if killed by a player or tamed wolf.

Trivia

  • Piglins receive damage from both fire and lava, as do hoglins.
  • Their attack strength varies a lot in all difficulties.
  • They are one of only three mobs in the game that can willingly give items to another player ( through bartering ), the others being villagers and wandering traders ( through trading ).
  • Despite unlocking the "Monsters Hunted" or "Monster Hunter" advancement when killing them, they do not despawn in Peaceful.
  • Piglins cannot ride on other entities.
