Minecraft: Pi Edition is a released version of Minecraft developed for the Raspberry Pi.[2] It is based on the already existing Pocket Edition but is slightly cut down, containing a revised feature set and support for multiple programming languages. The Pi Edition is intended as an educational tool for novice programmers. It is available to download for free, from Minecraft Pi Edition Downloads page and users are encouraged to open and change the game's code using its API.[3]
It is being developed by Aron Nieminen - one of the developers of the Pocket Edition, as well as Daniel Frisk.
Trivia
- There is a compiled build labelled 0.1 on the Mojang repository but it is currently encrypted so nobody can access it. When it was first uploaded people had downloaded it, because it was unprotected for a short amount of time. There are also records of Mojang either blocking or deleting a post announcing the release of the Pi Edition created on the 20th of December, and before the full public release access to the post produced a 404 error. Interestingly when the post was release on the 11th of February it still had the date 20th December 2012, indicating previous claims claims were true.
